Kender are hilarious. Everything about them is fun and games. God, I had a flashback of Tasselhoff roasting Flint and Tanis. Sooo many memories. Dragonlance might be the kiddie ride of d&d settings, but the characters are the best ever committed to the pages of a d&d related novel... "Doorknob Kender!", gets me every time.

There is nothing more frightening on all of Krynn, not a Minotaur legion on the march, not Lord Soth, not the Dark Queen herself, _nothing_ is more terrifying to a player or DM than a Kender going "oops!".

You are incorrect a Tinker Gnome is far more terrifying when it says opps. When the Kender says opps you know something bad has happened but when a Tinker Gnome says opps it best to run and hope you can find cover before you consumed in the resulting calamity.

Kender wonderlust means that almost every mature kender has player class levels. Most armies should go through Kenderhome like a plank going through a buzz saw. Annoyed that a kender has "found" something in your locked safe? Ask them, and they'll give it back. Hang a kender for theft? A few thousand of their tier two adventurer relatives turn up, asking questions so pointed you'll bleed.

Another way to keep your item safe from kender is to fill a locked safe full of glass beads and keep the item in plain sight but make it look dull and boring. You lose a lot of glass beads and have an open safe, but your item will be safe and sound.

Wish you would have expanded a bit on how absent-minded Kender kleptomania actually is. Most of the time, they don't even realize they're taking things, and one of Tas's favorite activities at the end of the day was to empty his pouch and see what new things had appeared there.
@JoseMolina-ij3xx
@JoseMolina-ij3xx 4 жыл бұрын
Kender kleptomania in the perspective of a PC, is that their pouches often act as a bag of wondrous things. The items found are usually random and valueless, with the exception of a few cases, where the DM at his discretion may put into a Kender's pouch that are crucial to the campaign or are unused items meant to annoy other party members and NPCs. Only an actual Kender rogue (handler) may choose to steal things, but doing so may get them caught.

I got into DnD very initially around 3-3.5e, and didn’t really dive in until the last few years after 5e was released. I have since become more & more interested in the lore of older editions and have delved deep into both SpellJammer & PlaneScape mostly by way of introduction to them through your videos, AJ. I have never been able to get into DragonLance because I find that it’s way too linear and that the story & modules are pretty much a follow-through with the books (of which, they fall a little flat for me... but, maybe I just haven’t begun reading them in the right mindset to get entrenched with the story, who know?). I have learned a great deal from all of your videos and I hope that continues with this delve into the DragonLance setting... You are by far & away one of my favorite channels on lore and your videos are always so in-depth & compellingly informative. Thank you for all that you do, AJ my friend! I know that I for one would probably never have been so interested or followed so many treks down the rabbit-hole into topics via wikis, reading through modules or Dragon Magazine articles without the content that you produce. Actually, the other things were a result of TSR being underappreciative of Weis' works. Should be blaming TSR for the current state of Dragonlance. If you've noticed, the other authors of the Dragonlance series are also unable to create novels of that saga.

The kender are a wonderful concept, and an interesting character race. Unfortunately, the only safe way for them to be included into your game is as an NPC race. In my experience, both as a player and as a DM, those who want to play kender are usually trolls who want to disrupt the game, but have a plausible in-game excuse for doing so. Like fans of chaotic neutral alignments. They're not allowed to play evil, but they still want to disrupt the game, so CN it is and it's off to the races. Even the best played kender are a little disruptive, so much so that I know many players that hate them, and a few that will drop out of a game once a kender is revealed. Still I see potential in them. They can be fun additions to an adventuring party, but they've been ruined, poisoned, by bad-faith actors.

The Kipu-Men (Thirdlings) have what you may call a Rough relationship with Kender. So much so that Kipu-Men will try their hardest to Avoid the Kender at all times. Kipu-Men, despite being one of the Smallest Human-Like Races (standing at a height range from between 1ft 11in to 2ft, with a rare few members being shorter than 1ft 11in with the rarest and shortest members being 1ft 6in), also being a Nomadic People who constantly travel, and being very Pacifistic & not carrying a desire to fight, instead choosing to Run when a threat arises, and are only willing to fight in self defense when their is no way to run, They can be quite violent against Kender, that is, unless the Kender are so annoying, and the Kipu-Men’s Sense of Self-Control has been broken. Kipu-Men who have actually made friendships with a Kender will always be very serious with them despite the fact that Kender are not very serious at all. The Kipu-Men will tell them that they best not steal from them, otherwise there will be Dire Consequences. Kipu-Men are, surprisingly, immune to lots of different forms of magic. Only magic spells that involve real natural phenomena like Fire, Lightning, Water, Earth, etc. can truly affect them. They can be Poisoned, but can recover, and the only magic that is not natural but does affect them is Healing Spells & Charms. They can’t be cursed with Bad Luck, or Blessed with Good Luck. They can’t be gifted with water breathing or flight. They can’t be mutilated or shapeshifted, and only members of their own Race, or of the Races that are known as the Zarvanian Races can utilize non-natural magic on them. Kipu-Men society as a whole revolves around relationships, that is with Family, Friends, Loved Ones, and their Clan’s, Tribes, and Factions as a whole. Kipu-Men always stick together, and even if one Kipu-Men has been separated from the rest of his or her clan, there will always be another Kipu-Men by their side. Now, Kipu-Men are a very skilled race of people. Their craftsmanship is only surpassed by that of Elves, Dwarves, and Humans. They actually wield Firearms, and their Firearms are only used either for Self Defense of their is no running away from a threat, or for Hunting, which very Few Kipu-Men of any Clan are allowed to do.

@@hexkwondo After the Time of the Twins series (I think) TSR released a series of books containing a number of short stories set in the Dragonlance universe. I’ve seen a lot of comments in several places asking about how to play a Kender. It takes a little bit of skill, but in short….. play them like a 5 year old in a Batman t-shirt. They are intended to be chaotically curious with a 5 second attention span. They are capable of being vicious to people they don’t like and doting on the people they care about. I’ve been around players who have played Kender as a chaotic stupid character. I always hated that take. My preference on the race is that a few bad apples spoiled the lot and they developed the reputation because of their short attention spans. Sure they are idiotically kleptomaniacs but if you and the DM do the foot work you can legitimately not know how you got the stuff in your pouches by doing random rolls. In dragon Lance I played a Kender Handler that was a 5th level ranger and 10th lvl rogue by the name of Milo Softshoes. He was monumentally curious and his pocket dumps were always epic and mostly worthless when flustered, but fun. If I was actively being roguish, there was no question where things in my pouches came from…. If I wasn’t, it was purely random and a surprise to me. Kender don’t lie well and I played that up a lot…. The character was brutally honest but in a light hearted way and if he was picking pockets he was honest about it. Fun times.

Kender: Halflings don't exist in Dragonlance. Here is the race we (Dragonlance) spawned because we allowed a Halfling in Dragonlance... Kender are all based upon that Halfling and, because Halflings don't exist here, this is how Kender now exist here... welcome to Dragonlance retro-(insert other side of term here).

Have always seen grognards explain kender as a race that strongly resembles half-elf children who are also hard-wired to being kleptomaniacs and mocking little shiets. There's also that one subrace that loses out on the kleptomancy for extreme paranoia and depression.

I wish WOTC would forgive Dragonlance, Dark Sun, Planescape, Gamma World, and pretty much the rest of Ravenloft outside of Barovia for what they did to be cast aside so new players can experience the plathora of settings 2nd edition and earlier players got to enjoy.

I played a Kender once. Delbin Knotwillow. He was fascinated with profanities, both spoken and written. He once "taunted" an entire Ogre village into letting his party pass, by painting a very offensive Ogrish script involving their mothers and something else happening. Anyway, it was a fun little campaign, and I really miss these natural Rogues.

That's facinating! So according to this, Krynn dwarves are descended from gnomes?! Typically, it's assumed that gnomes are a sub-species of dwarves.

Drow spelled backwards is "word." Nilbog spelled backwards is "goblin." Kender spelled backwards is "_________." I actually really love Kender. Other than the kleptomania, I am ADD enough to relate to their weirdness and have played them several times, always unnerving the rest of the table with how well I can slip into that particular character attitude. Kronin Deeppockets, great nephew of Uncle Tasslehoff (by marrige, twice removed, or was it three times removed? Hard to keep track after the remarriage of my mother's brother. Hey, how did this get into my pocket? Did you put it there when I wasn't looking? Well, it's safe with me. It can stay right next to my Spoon of Turning! A powerful magic item passed down to me from Uncle Tas himself!).
