As a certified dog trainer, canine behaviour therapist and representative of the IPDTA (International Positive Dog Training Association) it warms my heart to hear you explain the fallacy of classical alpha theory in canine pack hierarchy. The alpha male and female in a pack are the pair with breeding rights. Full stop. It does not mean that they actively dominate the rest of the pack. I love that the Lupin social system is an egalitarian democracy. Thanks for the great content.
@jeffreylucier52666 жыл бұрын
Chris Laurette do the "alpha" get first dibs when eating? Im not very knowledgeable on this, but curious!
@chrislaurette67786 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't generalise to all types of wild canines or all packs in all circumstances but my understanding is that typically North American wolves and African painted wolves hunt together and feed together without a pecking order and all adult pack members also share duties regurgitating meat for pups. Coyotes also bring food back to the pack for sharing. The idea of competition for resources within a pack and other dominance behaviour fallacies come from studies done in the 40s on captive wild wolves. Which is like studying the social dynamics in a prison and then assuming that all human social groups operate the same way. Some of the experts that helped disseminate these ideas changed their minds later in life. This kind of hierarchical dominance behaviour is seen in other social animals like lions and baboons but not so much as i understand it in canine family groups.

Imagine the sudden terror of the mother when a small lupin child runs straight up to my rough looking human ranger. She goes into a run as the man bends down and grasps the child. "Aww, aren't you just adorable!" He lifts the little laughing child and blows raspberries in the laughing child's belly, then puts him down. "You're gonna be a good adult someday. Be good for your momma, okay?" "Okay!" "Good child!" He reached into a pouch, and offers the child a piece of jerky and a dagger. The dagger is small for the human, but a reasonably large weapon for the small child. Just a fun interaction that can happen. Your players can pretty much all agree that a lupin pup is a welcome sight.

I love anything Known World related. Rakastas are much more appealing to me than Tabaxi. Lupins are one of those things that is particularly useful for DMs, which is a built-in arch-enemy for your villains, and a source of unexpected assistance for parties in the given environment when in desperate straits. Every now and then you need a good guy monster race to reduce the odds a bit. Integrating them as player characters in a very different environment should be difficult, though, especially when they are so tightly-knit - apart from overheating in hotter climes, they should be prone to fairly severe homesickness, where home is the tribe and their familiar range of steppe or taiga. And humans in places far from their homeland should tend to be very suspicious and liable to hostility, as well as in forest areas alongside farmland where there might well be conflict with Lupins over deforestation, masked as attacking them as Werewolves. This was something I think the Savage Baronies and Red Steel boxsets portrayed very well, where just because races have compatible alignment tendencies, that doesn't mean there isn't tribal feuding over land, and between the nomadic peoples and the colonizing farmers.

I had this pop up in my suggested videos after Josiah at Dungeon Dad made a video on Lupins. I am disappointed that Lupins have not yet become an official player race. While sitting around the campfire, randomly throwing a stick into the woods to keep the lupin entertained. Though, actually, after the 2nd or 3rd throw, he just keeps slowly walking out to pick it up, slowly bring it back, dropping it from his paw and grumbling, "I hate you..." And, then, does it again the next time you throw it, because he...just...can't...help...it... Then, after he finally starts growling, you rub his belly and condicendedly ask, "Who's a good boy?! I have a fan theory about the lupins origins in Mystara. In Mystara lore there's an obscure nation called Graakhalia which is a mixed society of elves and good gnolls, they get along fine but the elders of the society forbid interbreeding for unknown reasons (but implying that it's possible) maybe the Lupin are the result of this interbreeding in the past, can't think of a reason for the ban though.

It would actually be rather easy to spot a Lupin compared to a lycanthrope. If you see a wolfman wearing some sort of clothing or armor that actually fits them....its a Lupin. That outfit was put on, that body type. Meaning 1. They werent in some crazed lycan bloodlust, they had time to get dressed. 2. The armor/clothing was designed for that size/shape, a lycan wouldnt have that, as their body changes due to the transformation. Granted the civilized races of DnD would be lower education/intelligence than an onlooker using critical thinking in our world, but I imagine it wouldnt be hard for a ranger/adventurer to notice.

I remember a version of basic Dungeons & Dragons having Rakasha available, they weren't really Rakasha, they were their version of PC Tabaxi. It was a 1st level campaign and I saw their claw-claw-bite as a very effective weapon. If both claws hit, the bite hits automatically. Basically, while unarmed, I was more effective than the guy using the two-handed sword. I never played a version with a Lupin, I would have loved to. They seem awesome. The closest I had to them was PC denizens of Manimal Island. Once my players discovered that island, they were able to play any number of humanoid animal, including wolf, lynx, crocodile, eagle, bear, lion, coyote, viper, turtle, bat, rat, goat and baboon. It was basically a feature in my AD&D game inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles role-playing game. The Manimals were pretty much normal people who looked like bipedal animals with some animal adjustments. Their culture was a confederacy of fiefs, the different breeds did not live separately. They were vulnerable against lycanthrope killing weapons and wolfsbane so I would imagine a Lupin would mistake the furry ones for lycanthropes... at least at first. Oh, and if a Manimal contracts lycanthropy of any sort, they become completely human during the full moon... human features reminding others of what Manimal form is his true form (bald for turtle, bald with larger incisors for viper, hooked nose for eagle, thick hair with mutton chops and large hands for lion, big ears and pug nose for bat, etc.)

But I'd like to point out that you were wrong about the alpha pack structure and wolves, while it is true that they do not have the strict pack hierarchy that we commonly associate with that there is still a clearly defined alpha pair. And only they are allowed to produce the next generation. But in regards to how this translates over to the lupines society I think it's pretty good.

My theory about Lupin origins is that they have evolved from a Hutaakan elite military unit trained by the Nithian Empire to fight the Great Gnoll Horde which destroyed old Traldar, who were blown off course while travelling from Nithia to Traladara, and who lost their memories due to the Immortals' curse against Nithia. They came ashore somewhere well to the west of their intended destination, certainly west of the future Five Shires, and have developed as a completely seperate culture and race in isolation, before beginning to colonise back eastward to appear in the lands of Darokin, the Grand Duchy of Karameikos, as well as the kingdom of Renardy, whose present day culture is quite unlike that of Lupins found elsewhere. In most cases, they will be completely unaware of the existence of the jackal-headed Hutaakan race, as well of any such history or ancestry.

Player race have fun right, though all Humanoid animal like races get the one stat I wish all dogs birds and such have Human or longer life spans. Kenku are not limited to 60.

I would think that proper lupins, would merely see werewolves as misguided or improper abominations. Not tolerant of their presence to a large degree, but also not literally training their lives away to get rid of a minor curse/problem in comparison to other things... Unless, werewolfism would be "deadly" to a lupin because of some twist of fate that even the saliva would murder one off.
@Izzo-io2ou Жыл бұрын
I once used them as a enslaved race by minotaurs. They used the Lupin as humans would use war dogs. Part of that campaign was to free them from their bonage (not an easy task, for slaves rarely desire to be free, for those who hold their freedom sacrosanct, would fight to the death to keep it. Our present society as case in point of those who didn't cherish it enough.)

I think werebears take precautions to avoid Lupins. Yet a war between Lupins and Werebears would be interesting with the werebears trying to live in peace, but have to turn towards human settlements to bolster their numbers by taking in volunteers to undergo the ordeal of becoming a werebear. Yet a city full of werebears with rules and regulations that promote the balance of nature while embracing innovation could result in the discovery of new druidic studies, magic, and technology. Yet seeing solar powered and lunar powered weaponry and appliances would be unique. Just imagine necklaces that take in the moonlight and allow the werebear or any other lycanthrope to transform during broad daylight. Not to mention the disputes that would arise when the Lupins try to decimate a thriving city of werebears. Anyone else thinking a bloodbath involving multiple races thrown in?

AJ Pickett Wendigo tribe. You got a werewolf the apocalypse character in the slide show and a kitsune before the Wendigo theurge.

Ah, I see. You will have to forgive me, there is a lack of Lupin artwork.

Cause your wendigo's crinos form is so unintimidating you might as well call it lupin.

Perhaps there's an undiscovered plane where the lupin, ondonti(peaceful relatives of the orcs), and some of the other lost races alongside new races reside. Besides, how often do gods and goddesses create new planes to protect their worshippers or just because they want more worshippers. Yet I'm sure good aligned lycanthropes try to avoid Lupins at all costs.

Like an opposite world, where the Humans and Elves seasonally raid the peaceful monstrous races.

@@AJPickett In a way yes, but originating as a demiplane from the Forgotten Realms that eventually became its own material plane that can still connect to Fearun, except the portal is guarded by the goddess of the Ondonti. Ironically said goddess has worshippers residing on the prime material plane. Yet a new subrace of Chaotic Nuetral elves could pose a problem for the lawful good Ondonti who are the majority of this material plane. Yet humans would raid any race regardless of what material plsne they reside on due to their capability of being any alignment and that they can breed with almost any race. If they add more to the Creator deity of humanity they could tie it into the Forgotten God and set up some sort of redemption prophecy where the Forgotten God fuses with a powerful human in order to reestablish himself. Yet wouldn't be surprised if the creator deity commanded humanity to be fruitful and multiply. That command could be the reason why humans are willing to populate vast areas and breed with any sentient race.

I came away from this video with an idea for a character a jet black fur lupin. class: rogue assassin. Raised special from the rest of his litter with the idea of creating the perfect weapon against a ledgendary werewolf that has killed several different white howl council members. When his training was finished his first kill was a werewolf disguised as a plague doctor and after killing him he took his mask as a trophy/disguise

All the cool ideas for a pc, but what comes to mind for me is Moon Moon the Lupin, with hope of as many fails as possible. I was wondering if they would work with Fey, as I get the feeling that many fey dislike Lycanthropes. Plus from what I understand a lot of lycanthropes live in the Feywild. Or their view on good lycanthropes like werebears and wereravens.
