Dungeons and Dragons Lore : Marid

Marids stand sixteen to eighteen feet tall, towering over other genie kind, they range in appearance, taking on a humanoid form, with many having various features that are similar to aquatic species, such as scales, fins, gills and such, more at home in water, they can exist in most environments. Marids are immune to acid, cold and lightning, have no particular vulnerability to fire and are the most physically durable and powerful of the genies, though not as strong as a Dao, they have a greater constitution and overall toughness.

The elemental energy that fuels their existence has nothing to do with their ability to cast spells. If you were talking innate abilities then sure fire would not be something they could do. But spells are a different kettle of fish. And the wise genie would definitely use their everlasting life to learn wizardry so they could cover for their elemental typing. "Haha! You thought this would a fight with a water using genie but it is me, wizard genie!"

I've got a player running a water genasi monk. The Marid mother has been petrified and her palace and slaves taken over by an aboleth. The next chapter will revolve around the party getting through the Aboleth's defenses and getting a form of greater restoration to the marid statue and purify the lake again. Really looking forward to seeing them handle it

How about a Marid ruling over a giant city of slaves from different planes an crystal spheres. Everybody there is well treated and has lots of finery and the whole city has a sort of Vegas bright and flashy aesthetic, right down to the people, so the Marid can show off it's power

The Genie Warlock for a Marid Patrons seems like a path one wouldn’t mind taking. Granted it could be quite difficult of a task when they require service, but it will not be malicious to the servant if proper behavior is observed. And when you complete whatever task they desire, they are likely to leave you in peace, until such a time as service is required again. Your limits in regards to completing a task will not be ignored or held against you, even if your patron does not initially realize you are so limited. And they are unlikely to care how you use your powers in outside of your service. Additionally they with their fickle and long life’s ways might not have need of your service many times in your (relatively) short life. Calling you again only to find the Focus representing the pact in the hands of a son or grandson. No matter though, the Marid though lofty, arrogant, and powerful are not malicious to proper servants, who deliver proper service. Decline them at your peril, however. Though one might find a way to say, foist the service on another, citing your unworthiness and frailty.

I like the idea of a lineage long servitude to the genie as warlocks. They all get at least one level in warlock but in return they have to act in the genie's stead in its various dealings. With a plot hook being recovering an artifact the genie wants for some reason. Maybe something it wishes to add to its collection, or was stolen from it but is currently entertaining this century so letting its mortals do the legwork is all it can be bothered to do right now. Perhaps it is a mundane trade deal gone bad and the warlock has to save face for himself and his family before the genie catches wind of the bungle.

A marid by the name of "Jiya The Munificent" has been interacting a lot with the party in our Sunday campaign. She grants wishes for a price... The price she names! The first person to get a wish from her is making her a temple. The second person to get a wish from her is replacing the face of one of their great spirits with jiya's own (ensuring the temple has staff!) And the third person is giving her a line of genie in offspring to be her manifest champions on this plane! All to fight off some chaos lord! XD Jiya, of course, is merely fulfilling her own plans to get ahead in the genie hierarchy by having an entire population swear fealty to and worship her.

So, I understand that a genie is a soul that has bound to an element and is basically will meeting energy and taking form; my question now is, where did these souls come from? Are they mortal souls that have broken free of the typical divine judgement process and forged their own path? If so, how did they pull that off? What happens when they die for good (because I know you said in the efreeti video that they often have goons on hand to restore them should they die)? I'd be curious to know if their souls suffer some serious consequences for this kind of thing, in the same vein as a lich does cheating death. Edit: lol immediately after writing this I watch the Dao video and you say they were all mortal souls once, so that answers that part. I guess now I have to ask; how plausible would it be for a player character to become a genie?

@@AJPickett AD&D2ndE when I was 20 years old back in 1997, .. Player a lawful evil wizard that was crafty with Polymorph Self and using Limited Wish. Stuck by my twisted word and cause all the mortals to doubt their protection spells when dealing with efreeti . My foe was a female player CG mage courting the marid. Started off as a fun Al Qadim mini campaign that went flow blow Planescape. The Grand Game with her was what matter, knifing her was just soo .. graceless .. and lack any true style in defeating her. We were always trying to Upstage each other PC. " In short, .. we were the genie reality tv show series." My shop's open campaign style setting allowed other players to PC fiends to trick and bargain, trying to get my PC to Pledge himself to Baator with the Abyss going after both of us. DM, " Hey you two, since you are just playing MTG as a run a game for eight players, can the both of you NPC a pair of efreeti so I can have some slack in running this game ? " One of the card players, " How about one of us be a efreeti lord and the other a pit fiend ?" DM, " Yeah lets go for it."

They have slaves, but those slaves are given a bit of freedom to pursue their desires as long as it doesn't go against their masters. They would also take credit for the successes of their slaves, such as putting their name on a piece of art the slave created instead of the slave claiming it. Think similar to Thomas Edison who took credit for the inventions of his many workers.

So question what exactly is the difference between Genies/Djiins and other elementals as well as Giants...Cause this has always confused me for a long time ever since I played DnD...Also I LOVE ur vids Aj Picket I was absolutely mesmerized by ur Dragon Vids because I LOVE and I'm obsessed with Dragons and I always have since I was a child. Giants are mortal (very large) humanoids who are descended from the demigod offspring of a god who was called to the world of Toril (Realmspace) to fight alongside the native gods during the dawn war, against the primordials. While giants have elemental affinity, they are flesh and blood, prime material beings. Elementals are energy beings who are native to the elemental chaos, they naturally infuse and animate inorganic matter directly, without any sort of biological process, while they are alive, they are alien entities who do not conform to the physical laws of the prime material, and have no link to it, nor do they have a soul, as it is defined by the gods. Genies have a mortal origin in the prime material, they have, at some point, for whatever reason, somehow combined their soul with inorganic matter in the same manner as elementals do, and gained immortality (they do not die of old age), great magical power, and some sort of freedom from the normal fate of a mortal soul.. they fell between the gaps and avoided the afterlife, by becoming a different kind of elemental hybrid being. In some sources, the Genasi owe their existence to the influence, or perhaps even the distant parentage of, the Genies (though I need to look into that some more).

So if someone came upon a lamp with a Marid it's probably best to get on the Marid's good side and make wishes that coincide with the Marid's desires. In other words, treat it as a superior when making wishes. He or she may humor the request if they are allowed free reign.

Around 25 years ago, was part of an AD&D2ndE Al Qadim campaign setting game. We were playing a 2nd-level party group and a fire genie that was just put in to be a cameo and the DM didn't think any of us would be crazy enough to have our low level PC go up to the fire genie. I had my bard run up to the fire genie and roll a diplomacy check, used pick pocket to preform sledge of hands enhance with Cantrip, and offer it the Best of my items to pick from as a gift. Wonderful news I pass all my checks with room to spare. Fire genie, " If I would to grant you Three Wishes, what would they be ?" My bard, " First to raise my intelligence to cast high level magic to entertain you with and to great recite your greatness ..( bunch of flattery ) Second to offer unto you the best item I have earn each month and to humbling entertain you for that given day for the next 84 months , ..( more flattery and to see if what grace he has.) Third if I should be brought to death door in combat, my life will be renewed and I will serve in your house for 1,001 days. ( more flattery.) Fire genie, " All three Wishes are Granted and this small fire spirit gen will keep an eye on you." 2.) A few games later another bard PC tried the same thing but fail all of his rolls, so that other given fire genie grabbed him by his head and burn his PC to death. And turn to my PC and said, " Since you can not offer me your monthly best for the next 1,001 days .. what do you offer me ?" ( DM, " Roll a charisma check for Diplomacy.) Meta plot point was a dozen fire genie gambling when my bard would brought to death's door so he will begin his serve for 1,001 days. The whole game store was taking bets when my bard will get dropped. Then there was another desert beauty that granted my bard a Wish to raise his charisma by one point for 1,001 days of song when ever she wanted it, the DM counted out one, two, three and rolled a 1d12. Low roll, mid roll, high roll and not told anyone the result and the placement of which outsider granted the Wish. The other players started to meta game. It could be another fire genie out in the desert or a pit fiend or maybe a Balor. And their ideal of song & singing is not pleasant for the person making music for the fiend.
