Episode 353 - D&D aficionado and all around cool guy Pat Kilbane (MadTV, Evolution, The Dreams in Gary's Basement, etc) shows up to discuss how faithful a few games are to the Dungeons & Dragons world while videogame aficionado and all around bore-fest Joe (Game Sack, etc) evaluates if they are decent videogames or not.

I think a format like this has a lot of potential for Game Sack. You could bring in a tennis fan to help review different tennis games, bring in a local pro wrestler and have them check out wrestling games, maybe even talk with an author and have them review visual novels. There's always something interesting about something of an outsider perspective judging games based on their own priorities as enthusiasts.

To those who are wondering why a D&D fan hasn't read the Dragonlance books and/or aren't familiar with the characters contained therein, that's kind of like wondering why a video game player isn't intimately familiar with the characters in Wreck It Ralph or that Adam Sandler Pac Man movie. D&D is a game that people play together. Dragonlance is a fictional work based (loosely?) on some of its rules/mythos/etc. The character names can still have the same origins as pondered about in this episode. Maybe we'll ask Flint Dille, but as you can imagine he's a busy guy and a tough man to get a hold of. But if it happens I'll update this comment.
@bernomarkey
@bernomarkey 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that it is an accurate comparison to equate the books of Weis and Hickman to Wreck it Ralph, but that's just my opinion. I'm not a tabletop DnD player and their books/world building transcend the DnD realm.
@GameSack
@GameSack 2 жыл бұрын
@@bernomarkey Let me ask you this: Is it logical to assume that anyone who likes D&D (the game) is also familiar with the characters from a fictional book? I think it's an apt comparison.
@bernomarkey
@bernomarkey 2 жыл бұрын
@@GameSack it wasn't A book, it was multiple books that were quite popular. These characters also found their way into other licensed products such as the Spellfire CCG, cartoons and, as evidenced by your video, a video game on a major console.
@GameSack
@GameSack 2 жыл бұрын
@@bernomarkey That's great, but you completely avoided my question. And moreover, why can't their names have originated in the same way as pondered in this episode? It kind of makes the books irrelevant to the discussion if it's true. It's like me playing a GI Joe video game and choosing Flint. I wonder aloud if Flint was named after Flint Dille. People are bothered and say that NO Flint is from the cartoon/comic/toy/whatever. GI Joe Flint is still named after Flint Dille regardless. My hypothetical wondering would still be valid. It's basically the same thing here.

Something to note about Shadow: certain levels have areas only-accessible with certain characters (such as that forest level having an upper area that you can only reach if someone plays the Elf, or in the Deep Caverns near the end with the Dwarf (which results in a rematch against Tel'Arin and a brainwashef Tel'Elorin)). To add to this, certain actions can have effects on later parts of the game (saving the miniaturized people gives you access to their village for info and a shop, killing Tel'Arin and sparing Tel'Elorin skips the semifinal boss fight with Nagpa and his pets, and following the clues for the Mage's ultimate weapon allows a chance for all players to do a single attack that depletes half of the final boss' HP instantly). Plus, alternate versions of characters have different features (very easy to notice for Cleric, Elf, and Mage).

One thing I noticed retroactively with Warriors of the Eternal Sun, is that I think it may take place in the Hollow World setting. The monster selection, Aztec type bits and the always day part of it seem to point that way anyway. Dark Aliance did a great job balancing action and the dnd setting into a kind of diablo esque experience. I dont remember if it was a dnd branded game but there was at least one NES dungeon crawler similar to eye of the beholder that you could play with the 4 player adapter.

Yes, I think it must be based on Hollow World as well. I had the Hollow World campaign, but never anyone to play the tabletop game with. But I read all the lore about it and found the setting to be really interesting. Then a year or so later I got Warriors of the Eternal Sun, and realized during playing what it was about. It was so great to have a roundabout way to play Hollow World. And it was a great Genesis game that really felt like D&D to me!

I remember playing Eye of the Beholder years ago and actually, I liked the Sega CD version more than the original PC and the SNES versions. The game had sequels on PC and PC-98 as well, but those were never ported to consoles. Also, George Kamitani of Vanillaware was involved in the Capcom D&D beatemups as well.

Warriors of the Eternal Sun is one of my personal favorites on the Genesis. I wish there was more variety to the dungeons to explore and certainly a lot more one-time random encounters with unique enemies or NPCs. The swamp and jungle boil down to an empty map with one location - either a boss fight with a tribe of lizard men or a dungeon inside an Aztec-style pyramid. The last dungeon just throws every at you - drow, chimaeras, Medusae, dragons, mummies, vampires, and LOTS of magic users. Surprised they left out the displacer beasts and beholders, though. Maybe the sequel that never happened would have expanded on that - there was an option at the end to write down several passcodes to carry your party over to the next (planned) game.

Kind of surprised Pat didn’t mention the lore ties both Warriors (Heroes?) of the Lance and the Baldur’s Gate: DA games have to the original tabletop RPG. The first title depicts the events (or rather, some) of the Dragonlance Chronicles, specifically the module and novel Dragons of the Autumn Twilight. This is proven by the party members (the only HotL they’re missing is the barnmaid-turned-fighter Tika Waylan, later Tika Marjere after she married Caramon) and the Blue Crystal Staff Goldmoon carries, which was the proof that the gods of Krynn were finally coming back (the staff is sacred to the goddess of healing Mishakel), and the Red Dragon Highlord Ariakas is the guy on the box art. Those characters should be fairly well-known to any old-school D&D player not only because of the popular novels, but because Krynn was the second (maybe third; not sure if it or the Forgotten Realms were added first) campaign world ever added to the D&D settings (the original being Gary Gygax’s Greyhawk), as the appropriately-titled Dragonlance series modules. These eight characters were created and used by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman’s D&D group originally, but were modified to use as the first central group for the setting’s novelizations. As for Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, the city name is all but legendary. This was the namesake for the best CRPG series ever made, as well as a major city in Ed Greenwood’s Forgotten Realms campaign setting, which has long since surpassed Greyhawk as the popular quintessential D&D world. Furthermore, upon completing Extreme Mode, you can play as Drizzt Do’Urden, who is THE most famous and popular D&D character ever created. He’s also available to unlock in Dark Alliance 2, and there the Extreme Mode unlockable character is his (former) nemesis, the assassin Artemis Entreri. This guy should also be familiar to any fan of the D&D FR novels. Personally, my favorite D&D game is Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone. The standout point of this one is that the game’s script and characters were written by R.A. Salvatore, the best and most prolific author TSR/Wizards of the Coast ever hired for D&D settings novels and the creator of Drizzt, who actually joins the party in one mission. It’s a fun, fast-paced action game with RPG elements and a nice amount of lore. It’s a pretty straightforward title, but I spent sooo many hours with it. I’d love to get Game Sack’s opinion on it!

This was great. If Pat ever returns, I'd love to hear his thoughts on the D&D games I grew up with, specifically Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2 (not the Dark Alliance ones), Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment, and the early 2000s Neverwinter Nights games. They make a much better attempt at recreating the rules and general feel of a D&D session.

@Simon Jones Yeah, but Game Sack isn't really focused much on PC. A bit of a shame, but there are plenty of other KZbinrs that do lots of old PC/DOS/etc content. I'm fine with enjoying his more console-focused content. Still, from the standpoint of a D&D fan, the PC games do a much better job at capturing the feel of the tabletop experience. Particularly the RPG and writing aspect. It's notable that the games Pat felt were the most representative of D&D were the ones that were ports from PC/DOS/Amiga.

Always wanted to play “Eye of the Beholder” because it’s game engine is similar to an old favourite dungeon crawler “Dungeon Master” yes I know, original name! Not exactly D&D it did have a similar feel. It always stuck out because the first level was called the hall of heroes. Along the walls had portraits of former heroes who attempted the dungeon before. Apparently you’re just a disembodied ghost because you select a party of four from these heroes. Then you travel down into the dungeon to stop some evil wizard. They do have classes but they’re more like skills that are ranked. This means each character can technically have all abilities if you level them enough. The spell system was a bit clunky. There was this box with symbols that changed when you clicked on them. This made a string of symbols that, in the right order, cast the spell you wanted. This made it feel like you were actually trying to cast a spell. If anything find out the light spell because yes the dungeon is dark and torches don’t last forever! Anyways, this was a cool episode! Like always it’s always neat seeing what comes up next on Game Sack!
