Monty redeeming Lucretia as a worthy character, instead of her being the defacto "fuck that faction" choice, is the capstone to this arc of warring factions I didn't expect to see but love all the same.
@elementzero33793 ай бұрын
It is a testament to the amazing world-building and DM-craft that the factions were all in play throughout the entire campaign. From a character point of view, it seems very sketchy to try to ally the Falling Fire with the Amethyst Academy. Their views and goals in Drakkenheim couldn't be more opposed. Legitimizing the Falling Fire feels like the last thing the Academy would want. Though well intentioned, the FF are a threat to the entire world, and certainly going to oppose the Academy's efforts to study delerium. I'm only beginning the episode. Perhaps everyone agrees that this only a very short alliance. I can imagine a FF/AA detente, but it would be extremely difficult to arrange.

I should have caught it last time Monty was speaking about Lucretia's issues with the church, but it's quite clear to me now that Lucretia is basically the Martin Luther of Drakkenheim. Her testament is his nailing of the 95 theses... I just realized! Lucretia Matthaias Martin Luther LM -> ML Good one, Monty! I'm at 58:59. Branch out a bit further, adding Matt Easton's "Schola Gladiatoria", Toby Capwell's various videos, etc... and you'll soon be ditching silly PHB descriptions of your arms and armor for more true-to-life descriptions. " 'Studded Leather' ? Pffft. My +2 AC comes from a maille shirt." " 'Breastplate' ? It's a full cuirass or brigandine and helm worn over a maille shirt/buff coat/whatever fits the setting." D&D's armor tables are wretched. The math works, but the descriptions are silly.

My Warlock couldnt stand a paladin that traveled with us. (Lucretia reminds me of him) Early in our adventures we happened upon some basilisk eggs. She's been raising them since they hatched and one survived. She is now 14th level and the basilisk is a large juvenile who guards her tower and in particular her throne room. For side money she purchased a failing tavern in town and financed its reopen under one condition... that upon reopen she could rename it. It is now called "The Pissing Paladin" and there is a fountain statue of a certain paladin outside the front door. Let's just say the details of the sculpture are incredible.
@elementzero33793 ай бұрын
That's excellent. 😄 I've loved playing Paladins for decades, and have never played them as obnoxious and/or intolerant. Plenty of spiritually inclined people in real life are dignified and patient in their faith. This type of Paladin is better for party cohesion, and in my opinion much more compelling a character than the Lawful Obnoxious and Lawful Stupid walking meme. My other favorite classes are Wizard and Sorcerer. Drakkenheim is a campaign in which my up-front choice in class would be likely to dramatically impact the character's Faction-leanings.

"And now I stand before you, ready to slay the next thing in front of me!" Patricide foreshadowing? Also, definitely missed that strumming BGM that came up around the 35th minute - it was already in association with the Mill and the city outskirts all the way back in the first sessions. Then the rest of those early pieces after the Lucretia sequence - great times, great to hear them all again, feels like "good old times" in some ways. Sometimes I feel lightly nostalgic of the old early sessions, the low-stakes gritty adventure run. Additional praise is due for how the castle is treated in a sort of "horror" fashion and not just a boss mook fortress (though I'm sure this part will not be lacking in the next session either). This campaign in general gets a lot of its high notes from such atmosphere design, so it's good to play it properly when you have the chance. And things being this way, as well as the none-too-subtle hints about the minotaurs, seem to lead logically into the idea of "Drakkenheim monsters are transformed versions of various people", e.g. castle guards became minotaurs and devout Fire worshippers became gnolls etc etc. This makes me wonder if Veo's adoptive father figure is not a boss minotaur himself now... Definiitely felt like it was the castle playing tricks on them and not him (and if so, extra massive bonus points for actually making it a bit of a "genius locus", a sentient and active location, this should be so much more common in TTRPGs but for some reason isn't). At least the negotiations with Lulu went remarkably easily - perhaps she really did downplay the "crazy cultist" side of things, and I definitely commend the idea of actually giving it a "but she has a point too" side without making it weird or stupid. This sort of "she may be right" is exactly what was missing from it all - and, yes, as others noted, the idea of her essentially being the fantasy Reformation does not escape me, and it's a worthy idea to play with always. All in all, great session this time, and definitely can't wait to see what horrors the castle will play on the party next week. Also, they should be happy they didn't get a golem dragon based on Murozond instead. And with this, all of my lines start with an A!

I think I misjudged Lecretia Matthias. She's scarily intelligent and potent, yet accepting of all. The tenants of what she believes are still slightly off, but she's not as mad as how she came across as back in episode 25 or episode 36, where I saw so many things wrong and she really didn't help her own case with how she acted. Once you actually sit down and read her arguments and discuss them with her, she's awfully close to being someone that you want backing you, though I do wish she wasn't so overly pious. And I think what sways me most at the moment is her discovery with Delirium and how she, an intelligent person that legitimately sees faults in the existing religious system, is being persecuted for it. That's the mark of someone that is wrongly judged by the world. Huh. That'll teach me to judge based off initial impressions. But to be fair, she gave off a poor one... was that intentional, Monty? If so, then you're a master storyteller, and I applaud you.
