How about this: Mode assigned once per level. You can use something (points, lives, etc.) to reroll your mode. That gives you time to figure out unique challenges and prevents skipping until you like a combo. Display of modes as icons during gameplay. Rhythm mode has spikes out of the ground on beat or something to feel like a rhythm game. DK mode. Basically the controls of donkey Kong jungle beat. Vvvvvvv mode. Flippy flippy!
