My Grandad was there and he never said much about it, but he did say he spent 3 days under an upturned boat with his best friend who died from his wounds, he watched and held his friend as he died. Never forget the sacrifice those brave men made for us.

Watching Dunkirk was a soulful sucker punch to the gut, where do we find such extraordinary men? Manning the boats, those waiting on the beaches for rescue & those waiting at home for the desperate evacuation to return. Great Britain. Heroic people.

This is probably the best ww2 movie ever made. The rendition of Nimrod is superbly complimentary. As en ex Brit born in Woking, where the film ends, I feel emotional nostalgia for the great late ww2 generation. Best wishes from western Canada 🇨🇦 ❤

@1chish9 ай бұрын
@@henryjohnfacey8213 No one was arbitrating anything Henry but thanks for the misrepresentation. I am sorry but what has St George got to do with Nimrod which is a British (not 'English') anthem? But, as it happens, yes I know St George was allegedly buried in Palestine. Totally irrelevant but whatever .....

I am old and over the years I have never lost faith in the young of today understanding what these lads did for their grand parents, their parents and ultimately they themselves. Lately I must admit I worry that their heroism and sacrifice is getting lost in the mist of time and wokeism. To any youngsters of today that worry about their colour or their gender, more than what can happen in the horrors war. Please understand that life is not always easy, but it is precious. Be proud of who you are but do not forget what these lads and the ladies who fought did for you. Please do not ignore history. Look back into your own families history and I believe that somewhere in your family line you will see that sacrifice. You may well not be here today if it wasn't for them. LEST WE FORGET.

We were not prepared for the war we faced in 1939. It was pure British stubbornness and willingness to endure hardship that got us through and a little british ingenuity. We are even less prepared for the next one.

I would like to mention Captain Charles William Frederick Hope, Earl of Hopetoun (later the 3rd Marquess of Linlithgow) who served as an officer in the 51st Highland Division and was captured along with the rest of the Division at Dunkirk. He was held at Colditz Castle for the duration of the war. I held a summer internship at the stately home of the Hopes of Hopetoun (Hopetoun House) and learned of his story there.

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England’s foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain.

I'm not sure, but I have read that the Germans generally observed the rules of war in the West. In the East they committed atrocities per Hitler's orders. This does not mean that rogue soldiers didn't violate them now and then. In the West.
