One young man in particular-Joe Rantz-found trust among his teammates, despite a life of hardship and abandonment. Us Against the World: A Washington Rowing Legacy is narrated by Jennifer Huffman, the granddaughter of Joe Rantz-who continues to benefit from Joe's life lessons to this day.

Looked this up after just finishing Daniel Brown's stunning account... in tears! A thrilling and moving true story of success in adversity (and poverty) against the background of Nazi Germany & it's twisted ideals. It's lovely to see Joe's Granddaughter talking & rowing but do go and buy The Boys in the Boat, a beautifully written epic & one of the best books I've read in years!

Been a year since you wrote your comment, but I have to respond. I just finished the book and was looking for videos. I think The Boys in the Boat is the best book I’ve ever read from all angles, not just the rowing, but the US and world history, the weather history. I wish this book was required reading in high school!

I did not hear mention of the fact that the US team, farthest from the announcer, and the team that was next farthest didn't hear the start command. So they not only had the position with the most wind--they had lost time at the very beginning. I love this video. I only bring this up because it shows that the victory of the boys in the boat was even more astounding! One of the facts that I like best is that when Daniel James Brown asked Joe Rantz if DJB could write a book about Joe, Joe said that the story had to be about the boat--ie, the entire crew, the coaches and the boat builder. Brought up tears and admiration.

Thanks for this great video. I am German, and right now I am in the North of Germany, just 200 meters away from a lake called Ratzeburger See. The water of this lake is full of German rowing glory, since after WWII the so-called rowing professor Karl Adam used this lake for re-creating from scratch the German rowing wonder. He developed many innovative methods which later shared with the rest of the world. As a kid I used to root for the German teams, and I still make sure to watch the Olympic rowing events. But the 1936 Olympics were way before my time, and I did not know about the uplifting story of "The Boys In The Boat" ' and in this case I am really glad that the Germans did not win 😃 The German boys in their boat were of course also just young athlets who wanted to win. Nothing wrong with that! But their third place must have annoyed Hitler mightily. I would have loved to see Hitler's reaction!

I read the book several years ago and was so thrilled about what these boys had accomplished. Great writin g. You felt as though you were in Berlin with the team, you were in the boat with the boys and the feeling of such pride, I too was inn tears at the end.. What an amazing story. These boy are hero’s . This story literally hits home. I grew up on silberhorn rd in sequim and played in the same woods near the Dungeness river. I bought the book and currently reading it for the second time after being recommended it by so many people.

Read "The boys in the boat", I read it last year, it's this story. Being a Seattle native of several generations, and now living up here out of Sequim, it was quite a page turner. The odds they overcame as individuals, and as a team is really something.

Reading about Joe Rantz i have a feeling he would want the boathouse named after him, to include all his teammates from 1936 😎 an inspiring individual for sure. Dig, in Seattle, on a lake called union, in a building called the boathouse, superlative craftsmanship, was manifested. Rowing in Seattle and indeed the world was created by a master craftsman. “The host nation had won more medals than any other.” This is a direct quote from ‘The Boys of ‘36’ by American Experience. The final count for Germany was 101 medals overall, 32 golds. The USA ended up with 57 overall, 12 golds, which was second place. Sadly, when she said that they kept winning and winning she was correct 😕

I don’t think much happened to the German rowers. Hitler was trying to “sell” Nazi Germany as a friendly country. Also in rowing, sportsmanship is very important. One custom is that the losing team gives their shirt to the winning team. Also don’t forget the story of the friendship of Jesse Owens and Luz Long. One story from the 36 Olympics was how Long helped Owens with winning the long jump and they became friends after.
