@@locomojoboy2 while I agree with the actions Shane did, the fact that he did it in a fit of rage, causing such a panic and wasting all the ammunition was very reckless and I would wager that Rick had a long-term diplomatic solution by trying to appease Hershel in protecting his personal collection of sentimental family walkers, for the trade-off of living at and protecting the farm. I always wanted to know what would have happened if Rick and Hershel would have just come across Sofia by themselves as they escorted the other walkers to the barn. And this is where everyone started to see Rick as the leader. Shane broke the doors, but wouldn't raise his gun to Sophia. Rick did. He took that responsibility so no one else would have to have that guilt. In my opinion anyway. Shane was a necessary evil yes, but he made a situation and then couldnt follow through on it. Rick cleaned up the mess caused by Shane's actions.

I also forgot to add-Scott Wilson, who plays Hershel, stated that he didn’t think his character was mad/angry here, but more shocked because before that time, he never thought of the walkers as anything more than “sick people.” Watching Shane, he knew he was wrong. It doesn’t change the fact, though, that they were his friends and family. There would have been a right way to handle this, and Shane certainly didn’t do that! Watching it again, you really feel for the Greene family watching their relatives being shot down.

This is still the best episode in the series and one of the greatest twists in television history. It wouldn't have been possible without a lot of things coming together. The show had overspent and was dealing with staffing issues (switching showrunners, etc.) so the pace of season 2 was considerably slower than earlier seasons. A number of episodes had to be filmed on the farm with less walkers onscreen and a drawn out uneventful "search for Sophia" padding out the runtime. The sheer length of the search added, in a very real way, to the impact of the final reveal. Both the audience & the characters were at the limits of their endurance and really needed a big win. It was at that moment that the ironic tragedy of the final act was dropped in our laps. Very powerful. Had it not been for the money/bts problems, I doubt any network would've approved of such a huge gamble. Imo this was the greatest moment in the entire series and it was attributable as much to the skill of the writing staff as it was to circumstances of it's production.

You're right. Carol only said that to Daryl because she wanted him to be safe. A mother never, ever gives up hope for her child. When I watched this episode the first time, and saw Rick staring at the door, I knew what was coming, and I held my head and muttered "no, no, no, no...!" SMH in the process. That scene never gets easier to watch. I sobbed the first time I saw it, and I still tear up on re-watch. TWD will do that to ya', so keep your tissues handy. 😢 Shane is the ultimate bully. Talks a great big talk, and does all the nasty things, but in the end, freezes up when it's time to do the honest-to-goodness, hard and/or emotional stuff. That's where Rick is always the better leader. Anyway...sorry for the long comment, but I love this episode. Great reaction, as always. 😊🌺🏝️❤️

Yup. First thing I did when I found out you would be doing 3 episodes a week was calculate when this episode would come. Like most others, this is the episode that I knew I would not stop watching no matter what. Some of the most memorable things for me are the things that arent necessarily said, but are still powerful. Prime example being how once the group found out about the walkers in the barn, of course their reaction was to kill them. They are dangerous so they need to be eliminated, no need to think about it... its just what you do. Then Sofia comes out of the barn and nobody moves a muscle. It really hammers home that even though you know they are gone, you look at them and still see a loved one. Suddenly the ridiculous notion of keeping your friends and family locked up in a barn after they have turned doesnt seem so silly. Everytime I see this episode, and the camera pans over the group as they realize that last walker is Sofia, a voice in my head goes "Yeah, not so easy now huh?" And guess what? Its Hershal's voice.

I couldn’t believe it when Sophia came out-those tiny ankles get me every time I see it. Can we just take a moment and praise the absolutely SUPERB acting by everyone in this episode, especially Rick-Andrew Lincoln and Shane-Jon Bernthal. How NOT ONE person from TWD has won an Emmy for acting boggles the mind. This ensemble is AMAZING! You see the deterioration of Shane’s psyche right before your very eyes-Laurie telling him that no matter what it’s NOT his baby absolutely set this all in motion. One of my main reason's that I love this show and the cast is cause, the writer's make you think "What would you do"? and the cast are NOT just acting they are real great friends also. anytime there is a death they have a party fairwell for the character. I so enjoy watching you guys reactions to my favorite show. have a great day

They were so quick to follow Shane and shoot up all these nameless walkers even though they were shooting friends and family of Herschel. But the second Sofia walks out they understand it's more complicated than just _walkers_ _in_ _a_ _barn._

Your longtime followers must have neglected to tell you this show was just plain emotionally brutal. :P I love that it was Rick who shot Sophia. Shane always goes on about making the tough calls but I'd say to date that's the hardest decision Rick has had to make in this apocalypse - maybe ever.

Your reactions were priceless! Doing my rewatch last night, my heart was shattered into pieces. I'm a crier, and Sophia coming out of that barn gets me bad every time. Everything during the final scene is moving. The intense build-up as Shane unleashes his frustration, the CRAZINESS that ensues, and that heartbreaking discovery that follows. The acting performances, the score swelling in, and that finish as the camera pans out. It's haunting. Rick taking the responsibility of ending it is damn powerful.

I remember watching this episode for the first time (like you it was many years after it had been transmitted). Jon Bernthal (Shane) does bat-shit crazy/angry like no-one else. He's absolutely brilliant in this episode. As for the shocking ending, that really got me too. I think both Carol and Carl's reactions are what breaks my heart. No-one is safe on this show, not even kids. In a way, it's a callback to the very first episode with the little girl walker in that too. I've also gotta give a shout-out to composer Bear McCreary, who really ramps up both the emotion and the inevitability that someone's got to put Sophia down.

The slow pan upwards from sofias feet is awesome. It have that build up of who is it. And as you start to see a small figure being slowly shown. Everybodys heart drops. Also we see Shane not able to pull the trigger on Sofia. Eventhough he yelled that sofia was dead and everything, seeing her actually dead i think took him by surprise and he felt guilty probably.

Poor Carol. This episode gets me everytime. Literally just noticed everyone's individual reaction to seeing Sophia. Watching it the first time you get so distracted by Carol, Daryl, Carl, Hershel and Lori's reactions I didn't even pay attention to everyone else's. Andrea panting in shock. Shane looking defeated as he throws his hands on his head like "Okay, I didn't mean for this, this is bad." Ricks head is turned is disbelief. T Dog is left stunned and still. Glenn looks like he's had all hope sucked out of him. The actors are just incredible. This is why I love watching it again through your eyes. You get to see things you missed. Also, shoutout to Madison Lintz who did a great job portraying Sophia.

i just wanted to give you guys a big hug; that was so emotional. it wasn't shane's place to do what he did, but once again, he doesn't care. he's about the individual, the id, and damn everybody else. if u notice, he only freaked out to that extreme bc lori rebuffed him, and everybody's looking at rick as their leader. he's not used to losing. if he can't take by macho charm, he takes by lethal force. dale was right, he was made for the new world. the only thing that differed btw him and merle is a friendship w rick, social skills, and ab muscles. always standing back and picking w rick, he wishes he was him and could take all he had worked for without putting in the work. on a good day, he isn't worthy enough to carry rick's nut sack.

I've been waiting for this reaction. I've always enjoyed this episode. It reminds me of the Red Wedding on GoT. It's when you realize that the show writers have realized that they've gotten too gloomy and depressing and that they needed a light, cheery, uplifting episode for a change of pace. "They've found Sophia! Yay!" A general post-apocalypse morality question. You've hunkered down at your residence. A few months into the apocalypse, your landlord arrives and says that you need to pay your rent. Since money is no good, they want 1/4 of your food or other valuable supplies. Or you've bugged out and your group has found a wonderful, empty place to call home. You set up residence, reinforce the place, plant crops, etc. Shortly before the harvest, another group shows up with one of them claiming that you're in THEIR home (or their parents', whatever) and it's taken their group that long to retreat there. There's not enough room for both groups. And would it make a difference if that individual pulls out the key to the front door as proof?
