Ricks police training definitely showed here. He recognized very quickly that Tony was looking to Dave for signals on what to do, indicating that they have a system in place and have done this little game before. When Tony walks over to take a piss, that was clearly getting himself into a strategical position. Then Dave also got up and positioned himseld directly on the other side of Rick, putting him directly between the 2. At that moment Rick went into prepared mode and was ready to draw at a split seconds notice. Tony and Dave had sized up the 3 of them and assessed Rick as the only real threat . They knew if they took him out the other 2 would not put up a fight. But again Rick saw that and stayed ready even after Dave tried to lure him into a false sense of security by putting his gun on the bar. When he lunged for it, Rick fired a shot before Dave was even able to raise the gun. Then just as impressively, was able to be calm and cool enough to keep in the back of his head exactly where the other guy was to turn completely around and shoot him multiple times before he could even react to his friend being taken out. Absolute moment of badassery from Rick. Now Hershal has a reason to let Rick stay. He made it clear that he can read people and situations with deadly accuracy and that he will help keep Hershal's family safe from the threat that is just as dangerous if not more so than walkers.

At 17:30 was when Hershel realized that not only was Rick a good man with a kind soul for those he cared for, but also that for as long as Rick was around, he and his daughters would be the safest they could possibly be in their world. He realized what a mistake it would be making Rick leave.

Only... the other guy didn’t turn around, he was already facing Rick, but in the time that it took for that guy to take out his shotgun, Rick reacted effectively and very quickly to ensure that he can take out the guy behind him before he pulls out his shotgun

This is a defining moment for Rick. Before that he said "we don't kill the living". Now, from that moment, he knows he must do it to protect his people. And that music at the end is like showing what Rick is capable of, and that he is a fighter. One of the many best scenes in this show.

Well at this point in the show he's only killed them in self defence, he would have been able to do this before the outbreak started. I don't think this particular moment changed Rick i think it just made him realise now people are a major threat.

He realises people are beside him and that he must protect them. Maybe he killed before, as a cop. But now he needs to make decisions. Besides, there are cops who never killed in their career. Maybe Rick never killed someone before.

Sorry, I don't think so. The point came in the previous episode with the shooting of Sophia. A child that he also knew very well. This was the first time he'd killed someone close to him. In addition, he didn't have to do it himself. He decided to do it. So that no one else in his group has to do that and because it was he who she lost. After that, 2 assholes made no difference.

Now I'm not saying what Shane did was right! But he gave the walkers behind them a bait. So any walker that showed up in front of him, He would have had a better chance focusing in that direction instead of behind.

Thats how I figure people out. I do the exact. And I won't say anything to anyone. Its how you know exactly what kind of person people are. I have a friend I have known for over 15 years. She was a good person. But after she lost both her parents she has changed alot. We opened our home to her and I was helping her get away from the problems and people she kept dealing with. She told me she would stop and it would get better because they not dare come around my house or property. She told me that she had stopped. But I knew it didn't. I would observe things she did. It got to thr point I couldn't do it anymore. You can't help people that don't want to help themselves. I had to make her get out of my house it was getting to where it involved my kids. And my kids come first and most important to me. We talk now and she has her own place now but she has recently come into shit again. I guess she will never learn nor does she want to stop. Being the person I am. I don't want to give up on her but I can't and don't want to keep doing this. So in the long run. People like Dale you need them around in a world like this before you go to far yurself.

@@chapinENnyc Why would he be annoying? He figures out veey important things about people that others need to know. Hell if I had someone in a group like that. I'd want to know of what kind of person they are. Because now the group has seen how Shane is and with what all Dale knows and has been around those kinds of people. He knows what to look for and expect. Also he is the rational thought and talk of the group. You need that in this kind of world. To keep that sane and humanity part of yurself. I mean be aware and on alert and do what you have to but if you didn't have someone like that. You'd wind up like Shane in the head and not care about anyone but yurself and could careless to kill them or they be killed.

He don't want to be the main one to say something because some may not believe him. They have to hear it from more then just him. He is trying to keep the calm as much as possible until the time is right. This may not make since or say what I am trying to mean. I can't think of the right words right now.

Awesome moment for Rick, one of my favorites. The first time he murdered anyone but he had to do it to protect the farm and his family. Plus if you go back and rewatch that scene you can see Dave (the guy at the bar), right after he says “This guy” look down at his gun laying on the bar like he was going to reach for it. Sheriff Rick read that glance perfectly 😁

Filler ep may have been my initial reaction, but I've come to really love this episode. Hershel's speech in the bar may be that actor's finest moment. I could watch it over and over. And the dangers that fellow humans pose, even above and beyond the walkers, was so well punctuated here. And finally Rick stepping up again--huge. Seems like a simple episode, but it's actually really key for me.

While Nebraska is a come-down episode, it's hardly filler. There are multiple evolutions of characters in this episode. Herschel. His whole world-view shattered to the core. Rick "We don't kill the living" Grimes. Well, I guess that's changed. The further falling into madness of Shane. This episode is deliciously wonderful. Scott Wilson is so damn good at Herschel. Shit... I could talk about him for ages, but I won't. I just enjoy the moments he's on screen. Also watching Lacey shaking her head at Lori's driving skills had me laughing for a good minute. Great reaction from both. I look forward to what comes next for this channel. Until then, keep on keeping on.

I love Dale. He is my favorite character. Of course Rick is my fav. But the lead is a given. Dale is very wise. And just think how smart it was to take the i fo to Lori instead of Rick. It could have fallen on deaf ears. But Lori could hear it. And also, Rick would hear Lori. Rick has a keen sense about people. That scene showed his instincts, his skill, and his morals. He did not want to kill those men. Even knowing he was in danger, he would not pull the trigger unless forced. Right up to the last moment, and not a moment sooner. Shane pounds his chest "what I did for the group". As though no one else was capable of "smashing in the barn". But who can be patient and kind, while also protecting? And I am an old fart.lol Ive watched many westerns in my time. But that was, by far, my favorite quick draw! It was over before I even saw it! Another great video guys! Cant wait to see you again!

Good reaction. In 24 hrs Hershel learned the truth about the dead, and learned that his daughters can be in real danger from what's left of humanity. And you're right.. that should put Hershel in line next to Rick. I think Hershel was blinded by grief, but I don't think he's naïve in general. Lori.. Lori .. Lori ... the sun was still well above the tree-line ... when did she go looking for Rick... 3 or 4 hours after they left? Never quite got that move. Looking forward to the next one.

As I was watching this again, I thought, this is Rick's first and second human kill post-apocalypse. It was super duper fast, but man he has got some skills eh? This is one of the significant evolutionary moments in his character arc, not just because he killed a living person, but because he did so with no hesitation. I agree with you Lacey, i think Hershel really connected with Rick's ability to lead after seeing how he read these guys and handled business. Of course, Hershel is a man of faith and conviction, but even he knew these guys weren't the let them come on my farm type of guys. Lori's being dumb; it's this behavior that makes you wonder about her sometimes. She talks about Rick running off and being irrational, yet she goes and does this. Like seriously, what more help can she truly offer? She's a strong woman for sure, but she should've given this more though, would she be a help or more of a hindrance? Andrea would've been a better choice to send out for helping the men with the "heavy lifting". Dale's intuitiveness is pretty admirable, too bad he's pretty much facing this "foe" alone. What I find most interesting is that this the *first* time Rick has killed people in the show since the apocalypse. The first time Rick kills it's for self-defense while for Shane it's so that *he'll* survive and by extension, Carl.

I remember watching this episode for the first time thinking after the bar scene. Damn rick your my Boy :D I'm excited for you guys to get into this more, 2nd season is ok. But from 3rd Season on, it picks up alot and gets better and better.

To be fair regarding Lori leaving Carl there, it's safe there and there are plenty of adults around. Plus, she left without telling anyone because then they would of course try to stop her. I'm not so sure she should have done it at all, but I get why she would after Dale told her about Shane. She probably doesn't feel safe anymore with Shane being there and Rick not being there (and with how obsessed Shane is with her on top of that...). Dale isn't a liar and I think it being him who said that really got her thinking. Something really amazing about this show for me is that even elderly characters like Hershel get character development. They grow and change like everyone else and aren't treated as any less important to the story. This episode really made me respect Hershel. You'd think those guys would think trying to shoot Rick through a little better after he said he was a cop lol. Cop reflexes. Rick was already on high alert as it was and then the dummy actually tries to shoot. Nice try I guess, but not really. :P
