DUP Threatens The British Government With "Street Politics" Over Protocol?

2 жыл бұрын

The DUP MP Ian Paisley clashed with the Northern Ireland Secretary of State Brandon Lewis during a committee meeting where he it seems threatened "street politics" if the British government didn't scrap the Protocol. Paisley and the DUP campaigned for Brexit and still support it, but want the Northern Ireland Protocol, which is part of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement removed.

Street Politics is the DUP's shorthand for urban terrorism. This isn't the first time they've threatened terror, and as promoters of terrorism they should be severely restricted and/or jailed.

Unionists have form for this. The reason for partition and the creation of NI was the threats from Carson's thugs to wreak havoc in GB and the new Irish Free State if Home Rule was imposed on them. How they have the gall to call themselves "loyalists" is beyond me. Certainly not loyal to the Crown or the UK

I will declare an interest in this, being a left footer of Irish descent, but Is he trying to ignite the terrorism touch-paper just like his father did back in the 60's when he was involved in the blowing up an electricity sub-station? I've lost friends and colleagues from both sides of the political/religious divide, so I really don't need Junior spewing out the same crap as his father 50+ years later. Neither, I suspect, do the people of NI.

If G.B.could literally SAW OFF Ulster from the Island of Ireland and let it drift out into the Atlantic Ocean, they would...it has proven to be their most expensive and biggest Colonial Blunder, to put it mildly..The young generation of Northern and Southetn Ireland will bridge this divide and hatred, and its evident, its happening ☘🕶👍🍺🇮🇪🇨🇦

They'll fail of course. Personally, I think we should campaign for English independence, as the rest of us seem to get on quite well and have similar approaches to governance, akin to a Scandinavian model. The comment about unionists be treated as "second class citizens" honestly angers me to no end! This coming form a man whose father was very vocal when it came to showing his hatred and contempt towards Catholics (at times advocating for physical violence towards them), during a period of thirty years (the Troubles) in which Catholic's were truly treated like second class citizens within their own State. Mr. Paisley has no shame and should be called out for this disgustingly hypocritical statement.

It's important to note that Sinn Fein and the DUP are on opposite trajectories here: Sinn Fein is close to acquiring previously unattainable power for themselves in both NI and the ROI, while the DUP is seeing their primacy in Stormont threatened while having witnessed their numbers in Westminster diminish from an all time high. For a group like the DUP, a "I'm taking my ball and going home" group if there ever was one, this is unimaginable, so, of course, they'll egg on their violent unionists friends. Because that's pretty much all they have in the toolbox. And just to be clear, I am just noting these things, not justifying them.

Its a tricky one to guess. Brexit has destabalised NI. The NI protocol is a way of trying to hold on to some of that stability and from a practical/business point of view, not only is it working, NI is benefiting. But thtas a problem for the DUP and loyalists. A successful NI is closer to the republic than it is to GB. The more it succeeds the closer it gets and they can see that that road logically, leads to reunification. Even though that would be the best thing for the people, DUP are stuck in the past fighting old battles wanting to be part of a UK that no longer exists. They want to be part of a sinking UK - they want to jump out of the lifeboat and go down with the rest of the ship.

@@johnfromireland7551 the only fair thing is to have two separate votes firstly one for the people in Northern Ireland to vote on whether or not they want to be politically unified as a single entity To the ROI or whether to remain within the UK? Then if they vote yes to a unified Ireland there should then be a vote taken within the ROI on that unification of which everyone knows what the outcome of that vote would be…as no matter how much people in the ROI may want a politically unified Ireland it is not as clear cut as the nationalist would like to think it is in Northern Ireland no matter how many of the commentators on here would have people believe it is on this very bias nationalistic Irish channel. As the destiny of Northern Ireland should be decided by the people of Northern Ireland & not by any outside forces trying to force it upon them such as the EU,ROI or even joe Biden…because whether you nationalist like it or not NI are still a part of the UK so any yes vote would still have to be verified by the government in Westminster

@@michaelhayes105 I agree. Once NI votes for reunification it is, then, up to the Irish and British states to implement the unification. Whilst I had friends from the other side of the community and for a year lived in a Unionist area, there can be no doubt that there were second class citizens. Of course the middle classes didn't suffer as much but the bigotry was there too. This is the same old story. It used to work but the world has moved on and we've all heard it before. The Protocol enjoys the good will of the people and had to say. The DUP can't understand that their veto and their threats are things of the past. No wonder they don't believe in evolution as they think that things will or can be never change.

The way someone said "Ian!" immediately as he said "street violence" was telling. Thugs on the street, those associated with the DUP, need political cover to protect them from prosecution. When Paisley says this to a UK government minister, who responds with a fairly bland " I'm for free speech and appropriate protest" , the thugs are listening. The words are right, but the tone is meek. Lewis should have said, with conviction " NI renounced violence in the GFA, and we thr UK government will not permit a part of this country to use violence and intimation to secure political goals"

Brexit has been a complete horlicks that has caused such problems to the UK economy that it will take years for all of the consequences to be recognised. The NI Protocol was a life raft for the economy of NI, but the DUP don't want the economy to be saved. They seem so happy for it to be dragged below the waves by Westminster. Other countries looking on at this are probable wondering if the NI Protocol IS scrapped, how could they possibly go into business with the UK knowing that any agreement with them will be torn up without a second thought. This summer will be fascinating to watch with the pending election AND the result of the 2021 census. Remember, it just took 51.9% of voters (not of the electorate) fir Brexit to be triggered.

We are witnessing the last sting of the dying wasp (no pun intended). The Ireland they hated and feared so much no longer exists, if they would only but look; the Empire they love so much has disintegrated in shame and ignominy. They are the majority in only two of Ireland's 32 counties - it's over for them. Even Brexit England is embarrassed by them and their big cousin Scotland has finally turned its back on them. They are Europe's Afrikaners, but without a de Klerk to save them. They are, however, still dangerous, and they should be faced down by the British government. They won't be, of course.
