DuPont Corian Countertop Review (after living with it for 6 months)

Here is my review of DuPont Corian Countertops. This is a solid surface product that is durable and hardy and has a very pleasant aesthetic. We have had laminate and granite countertops in the past, but this was our first encounter with Corian. My hope is that this review will help you decide if Corian is the right product for you.
Things I love: 1) hardy surface, 2) looks nice, 3) solid surface- no grooves to clean, 4) easy to clean, and 5) no messy underboard that deteriorates over time.
Things I don't love: 1) stains from iron products like cast iron- still haven't figured out how to get those stains up, 2) not heat tolerant- will not crack but it will leave marks, 3) because it is a solid surface, I will be unable to switch the sink out without refiguring, and 4) it will get scratches when cut on.
Overall, I think it depends on your budget and area as to whether this product is worth the money. When we lived in the D.C. area, we could get granite for under $35/sq. Ft. We had price compared that to Corian (at the time- around 2016) which was around $30/sq. ft.
However, where we are in the midwest currently, granite has been quoted to us at $60/sq. Ft. I have not received a quote on Corian here, as it had already been installed by the previous owner.
Laminate counters are also a budget option to allow for quick updating.
If I were to install Corian again, the thing I have learned is to have them cut it to fit a stainless steel sink. With stainless steel, you can buff out just about anything using steel wool.
I hope this helps you out! Blessings

After posting this, I decided to take the chance and pour a bleach bath. I let it soak for 15ish minutes. The sink is almost perfectly clean with very few markings!

40 years experience Corian guy here ...that stain from the skillet is a scorch from heat ...no bleach etc will help ....hand sand it with whatever grit it takes to remove it ..then graduate to finer and finer grits to restore to matching the surrounding area

I have white Corian counter tops and use bleach to remove stains (about once a month). First, make sure the surface is wet, then pour 1 TBSP of bleach on the stain and with a damp wash cloth wipe down the entire area. The stain should lift within seconds. Then rinse well with warm water and dry with a cloth. It does make the surface a tiny bit different immediately after (especially if you let it sit a long time) but then it seems to restore itself. FYI, my 3/4" C. countertops are 40 years old. When we moved into the house in 2004, I abused them knowing I would renovate one day and get quartz. Well, after 14 years of abuse they look great, we're having our kitchen completely renovated right now and guess what? I'm reusing the old Corian. They have been recut to size and buffed and they look good as new. * P.S. I'm not sure how bleach would react on coloured Corian, maybe do a tiny test patch and wipe up immediately.

You have white corian countertops and sink? I just went to Lowe’s today and saw them on display but was afraid white might get scratched or stained? You’ve had them for 40 years and still like them? I hate my Corian sink; stains easily and it's generally hard to keep clean. Being made from space-age polymers (plastic), it's much softer than what most people are used to. Nothing at all like the hardness and gloss of porcelain. I'm changing mine out to a stainless work station. But Corian counter tops are OK if you remember to always use trivets under hot pots. If you can keep from burning it, the counters will last for a good, long time. Scratches can be sanded out, and minor brown spots from burns, which is pretty cool.

I see you already said you used the bleach, when I had a farmhouse sink, bleach was the only thing that got the stains out. My question is, what exactly does heat do to the Corian? Any other donts you have discovered with the corian?
@BethEHomeAndGarden
@BethEHomeAndGarden 5 жыл бұрын
The heat created the dark mark in the sink. It was almost like a burned rust spot. I did not notice any permanent damage other than a superficial discoloration. The heat did not melt, scratch, or indent the surface. Does that answer your question?

bleach is not abrasive. Abrasive means it will scratch. Barkeepers (brand) cleanser is your best hope, has a different cleaning ingredient than standard cleansers (like Comet) and is non abrasive. The problem with the cast Iron pan is that it was hot. That may not be a stain, but actually a burn. This counter top was made from chemical composition and it can be burned.
