The child actors on this show were on another level man. By far the best I've ever seen, and it's not like there's only one or two kids, it's pretty much a whole new ensemble and they're all impeccable. And just like in the other seasons, many of the child cast had never acted before yet they all knocked it out of the park. Honestly I can't think of another show with a similarly massive cast of equally talented actors, there's usually quite a few duds but I can't think of a single one in "The Wire", even for the smallest parts with only one or two lines.

The scene where Dukie hits up Prezbo for money is one of the saddest scenes in the Wire. They both know where the money is going but they both keep up the act for the sake of the friendship they had. Reminds me of the speech Waylon gives at NA, where he lists all the things he lost to his addiction, and ends it with "the respect of anyone who lent me money or tried to do me a favor"
@zoo05zoo7 жыл бұрын
I don't think Prezbo actually knew it would be for drugs. He knew Dukie wasn't enrolling in school but if he thought it would be for drugs, he likely wouldn't have given him a ride in his car (particularly knowing the world as a former cop).

Prezbo knew Dukie was into something. Maybe not specifically drugs but something. Considering where everyone was from drugs is always a safe bet though. Prezbo says he doesnt care about the money. Meaning "Dukie I can help you if you need help". Prezbo gave him the money knowing full well he would never see it again but he gave Dukie the choice. If there is any of the old you left in there I am here but if not I wont be here for you ever again and your charm wont work because ill see right through it.

This! After a while, I suspect most teachers give up on their "Dead Poets"/"Dangerous Mimds" Rose tinted glasses not out of apathy, but as a survival mechanism. Otherwise you more than likely will burn out before you even reach ten years of teaching. Add to the fact that you work for an institution that sees you, the most important cog in the machine, as the most disposable and cheap part. I really do wonder these days why they still choose that career. But then again, I'm not really very empathetic to the human condition. That being said, thank you Mr. Hogg and Mr. Marsden. 2 teachers in my schooling life that went above and beyond in helping me to survive and get through school without losing it. Whether it was by one of them teaching me the skill of distraction from my emotions. When I got upset and angry in primary school (yr 6), he would send me to the library with 3 things to look up and research and come back to report what I learned. I never got what he was doing st the time until I grew up. The other one, well when it was clear that I was going to fail my HSC due to undiagnosed learning disability, which lead to me just not even going to school half the time in the end (I also lost some friendships due to social politics of the schoolyard), when I did go to school just for my chemistry classes (because I loved it, even though I had a hard time with the theory), he NEVER ONCE made me feel unwanted in that classroom! I failed test after test. But he never made a thing out of it. Because I guess I still respected that classroom. I never misbehave, made a scene or interfered with other students concentration. And the truth is, when I was really low and depressed, the smile and beauty of a certain girl in my class was the one thing that always brightened up my day/life. Teachers - Truly unsung heroes. Excuse my rant.

I'm going to be mad honest but when I saw this I fucking cried for Duquan. Just seeing this made me so goddamn emotional even though he's a fictional character in a TV show. This kid has got alcoholic/drug addicted parents who sell his belongings and kids who pick on him for being the nice person he is - and now he wants to escape his life using heroin. This and Omar getting killed are probably the two saddest scenes in all of the Wire.
@wilsonramirez59563 жыл бұрын
As much as I like Omar, not sure his death was all that sad. If anything it pisses me that a lil' shit like Kenard ends up killing him. I thought Omar would have died guns blazing. Wallace getting killed by Bodie and Poot, that was sad. They were supposed to be his boys. Wallace was actually a good kid. But also had no direction.

I love the friendship bond Michael, Randy, Namond & Dukie shared. Even though he was a kid that was never fresh, occasionally stunk they still kicked it with him. It’s sad what happened man, how they all drifted apart. Michael got deep into the drug game, Randy was labeled a snitch & got his foster mothers house torched so he had to go back in to the system, Dukie ended up becoming a heroin addict & Naymond pretty much made out best of all of them. Bunny Colvin adopted Naymond & took him in, showed him how to be a man & helped him bring out his intelligence he had stored away all that time! Honestly, wish that would of happened for Dukie.
@GeronFletcher2 жыл бұрын
I’m just glad namond made it out. He’s on the rise he’s a smart kid too. These kids just need a chance. Honestly all the kids in this show are the most interesting part of this classic show. Which is the point. The one most deserving doesn’t always get the best ending. Kids that deserve better circumstances don’t get them. Yet, we’re so quick to smear them as criminals and irresponsible and whatever other adjectives and nouns we can think of.

As much as I want to say I survived by my own accord and made something of myself in turn; In reality I had so many mentors and people who pushed me to go beyond my comfort zone; in addition to daily reminders of what would happen to me if I couldn't do it. So many beautiful kids who had potential like Duquan, but their environment and biological parents could not nuture or take care of them, let alone their own selves. By far and away the saddest character development in what was for me at least an extremely emotionally charged series. I’ve lived in New York my whole life not Baltimore but this same exact system, community, and the institutions around them all exist in the same way. There was a kid in my hood named Brooke who was an intelligent and sweet kid who wouldn’t hurt a fly, much like Dukie. Only a couple years after high school I found him strung out in front of a 7-Eleven picking up cigarette butts in an attempt to smoke what was left, as he was asking people for their spare change. It wasn’t too long after that his fatal overdose occurred and when it happened I couldn’t help but think of the potential he had and how it was lost so easily because people never thought much of him, and would usually just clown him. This show was so brilliant, to the point where when I re-watch it now it is so relatable that it makes me think of my now deceased friend and I begin to tear up.

You would have to have watched the whole show (or season) to really feel the sorrow and how tragic it was for him to go down this path. Lots of “if only”... He killed a police officer by not announcing himself as police, which was the final nail in a coffin which had been built by many reckless acts which endangered others. They are poor decisions. Here, he sees Dukie is lying, but as he points out he doesnt care about the money (and as he knows that he is living on the street) so he gives it to him with the message that instills guilt in Dukie, and was the very last thing he could have done to save him from the path he was headed down. Not a poor decision, and in nowhere near the same realm as the things the ended his policing career.

4:24 I wasn’t certain until that moment. That smile. There’s just something wild in it.

Dukie is new the Bubz, Michael is the new Omar (it is even implied his sexuality was in question due to Bug’s father’s abuse of him..hence why he had him killed), Randy became the new Bodie, and Namond (of all people) became the next Bunny Colvin. It’s crazy how the story lines on that show grow and cross paths or have parallels.

The guy playing the junkie also played in the TV Show, Atlanta, he was following Paper Boi in the woods.

he had no chance. just like all the characters in this show. they all are predestined to end up where they do. its not the person, its the system.

I love how utterly fucking heartbreaking this entire storyline is. There’s not a single moment of Daquan’s story that’s truly happy, uplifting, or anything remotely close to that. This is truly a rags to even worse rags story. And I appreciate that this show didn’t pull any punches, if anything the show is throwing absolute haymakers at the audience by showing Daquan was not only a child who suffered like this, but was amongst the smartest in his school and class at the time only for circumstances to be the thing that drives him down an even worse path than many of the other characters took. It’s utterly depressing but I like that the flip side of the story is bubbles, so while there isn’t much hope for Daquan, there’s bubbles showing it is possible to rise above.

Dukie was the only character on The Wire that I actually felt sorry for. Seeing how he ended up gave me a physically sick feeling in my stomach. Damn.

I'm just now realizing that Dukie kept 150 for himself and probably shot it up too, so sad.

Its hard being a nerd in the Wire world. Stringer, Prop Joe, and Duckie learned the hard way.
