I will try and give you your answer as well as some other tips I found that gave me great results.If you are doing a single color, you will not have that problem. Duracoat looks great once it is applied. This may have to be done in multiple parts due to post limitations by KZbin. 1: If you are wanting a factory look on your gun, airbrushing is the only way to go. Forget the canned air and airbrush route. An air compressor cranked up to 40 p.s.i. yielded the best results for me.

2: You can not get your gun clean enough. 3: Make sure there is no silicone anywhere near your spraying area. 4: Duracoat is VERY fragile until it cures. It becomes stronger as time goes on. I would recommend clearing once the final coat is dry. 5: To help with the thick layer issue when doing multi-colors, reduce the top layers of Duracoat. I used a 4:1 ratio. You can reduce it with the included cleaner or laquer thinner.

The "fogging up" you mention is called blushing and mainly occurs due to humidity, heat, or too light of a coat. You can apply the Matte Clear as soon as the last color you applied flashes off (approximately five minutes). You can also wait to apply the Matte Clear if needed as long as you apply it within seven days of the first color you sprayed.

The DuraCoat Matte Clear will create a nice, even look for your camo pattern. It will give the Tactical Foliage Green a slight amount of sheen while not effecting the sheen of the other two colors greatly. This will leave you with a uniform look with about the amount of sheen you see in the other two colors currently.

Correct, the DuraCoat to Hardener ratio is 12 parts of DuraCoat to 1 part of Hardener. It does not matter what size your parts are as long as you maintain the 12 to 1 ratio.

DuraCoat can withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit (it will discolor if taken past that temperature) which is suitable for the vast majority of firearms. We do also manufacture a product called DuraHeat that can withstand temperatures up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit if you are coating the barrel of a fully automatic firearm. If you want to recoat your firearm well after it's been DuraCoated, then you will need to blast off the DuraCoat using either sand or aluminum oxide.

Yes, DuraCoat can be used on all types of plastics including Magpul stocks.

The Preval Aerosol Sprayer that comes with the DuraCoat EasyWay Camo Kit can spray up to 12 ounces of DuraCoat. So, you will have enough propellant to spray all the colors of the camouflage pattern and also to spray DuraCoat Reducer in between colors in order to clean out the sprayer. In other words, there should be more than enough propellant to complete the camouflage pattern on one full rifle without having to worry about running out.

11: A handgun is harder to make look good than a long gun due to size limitations and machining on the slide and frame. Cutting the bigger stencils down to a smaller size works well. 12: When completed, you will still have some high spots from the masking even if you did reduce the coats. Matte finish clear laquer will level most of this with a just a few thin coats. 13: I sanded my gun with 600 grit before applying Duracoat. Aluminum-oxide blasting also works well before using Duracoat.

9: I worked backwards versus what Duracoat suggested. I spray my lightest color first and then move out to the darkest colors. Use LOTS of stencils between coats and over lap them for best results. If you do not use anough stencils, the final darker coat will be very dominant and your gun will look like a very hard game of Tetris instead of digital camo. 10: Did I mention it is impossible to get your gun too clean?

6: You may have residue left from the stencils. Goo Gone works well, but, you will need to clean it off thoroughly before moving onto the next coat. 7: If your gun is blued, you can remove the bluing with white vinegar. Keep in mind, only wipe off the areas that are to be Duracoated with a damp cloth using white vinegar. Leave the bluing inside the gun. 8: Very thin " dusting " layers work best. This helps to keep from getting build up in grooves and making the gun look like it was " molded ".

DuraCoat will adhere very well to the glass-reinforced nylon handle scales! Just be sure to completely clean and thoroughly rough up the surface before applying the DuraCoat.

I just received this kit and had my gun pre-prepped and ready to go, in short, I need to order another one to redo it. I followed your instructions which was a mistake. You should not paint the darker color first. That should be your last. The problem when you paint dark first, is that you have several lighter coats built up to cover the darker coat beneath and then you have excessive high spots from the stencils.

Yes, DuraCoat can be applied to aluminum and all other metals, plastics, wood, etc.

Applying too many layers of DuraCoat does have the potential of having a negative effect on your project. We always recommend 3 to 4 wet, light coats. The only time we recommend applying more than that is when coating high wear areas. The potential downfalls of applying too many layers is that you may affect the tolerances of tight tolerance areas. You may also increase the sheen to an undesirable shine and could also potentially fill in markings.

All rust must be removed prior to DuraCoating. If not, the rust will continue to develop underneath the DuraCoat and this may lead to adhesion problems. We recommend using 0000 steel wool and/or 400-600 grit sandpaper to remove all the rust. Then, simply proceed with the standard DuraCoat prep procedure of degreasing and then roughing up the surface before proceeding to spray with DuraCoat.

I did my AK47 last week with a digital pattern using desert mirage tan, wilderness mirage tan and the tactical foliage green which is a flat color. It came out great except the flat color looks more like primer next to the other colors. I know you recommend using a clearcoat to "even" out the colors. I bought a "matte" clear coat, will this dull my finish too much? I've also been told this can "fog" up. my paint job if I apply it too soon. Your products are great by the way!

We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your end result. When applying a pattern, you may apply the colors in any order you would like. The order that was used in the video is just the way we choose to do it and what we recommend. The ridges you experienced can be avoided by applying less material. To insure complete coverage of the color beneath, allow the color you're spraying to dry between each spray pass. Also, a coat of Matte Clear will help eliminate some of the ridges.

Most of the stencils should be able to be used more than once. Be sure to remove the stencils carefully as they could distort when pulling them off and then we recommend storing them on wax paper until you are ready to use them again. Our standard DuraCoat product, which includes the Tactical color line, will work great on the barrel of a 1911.

Why don't you use water to wash out the spray jar? Wouldn't that be ok as long as you made sure the jar was dry before putting in the next color?

Second question and Im sorry you have been great and very timely thus far..... surface is all prepped and plan on applying ACU to my shotgun but Im forseeing the problem of lining up if everything is sprayed seperate, and should just a base coat be applied to any moving area like under rail slide and whole gun then reassemble and add layers with stencils or keep seperate the whole time and reassemble?

When applying a camo pattern, we always recommend DuraCoating all of the parts separately the entire time and then reassembling afterwards. If needed, parts can be placed together momentarily to line up the pattern correctly, but each part should be DuraCoated individually. Of course you are free to complete the project in whichever way you feel most comfortable with, but applying a camo pattern in this manner is how we always recommend doing it in order to help ensure success.

You should rough up the surface with the included scrubbing pad or 400 grit sandpaper.

It is my understanding that the Duracoat is not meant for plastics, i.e. stocks however, in the video it looks like you are painting a plastic stock. Can Duracoat be used on plastic stocks like Magpul?

Question Ive just ordered the acu and want to be sure the surface is prepped 100% and the degreasing I get that. What about minor rust? Work it until its gone and then start or will duracoat stop it from going further? And if remove is the best should it be an onion or steel wool and wd40? Can you reuse the stencils after one application? I'm wanting to do two pistols but not the same colors. Would your normal tactical colors be able to be applied to the barrel of a 1911 or would you recommend durabake for that application?

Water will not be able to sufficiently clean and remove all of the solvents and pigments from the sprayer and jar. The DuraCoat EasyWay Camo Kit includes DuraCoat Reducer in order to accomplish this task. The DuraCoat Reducer will clean and remove all of the DuraCoat from the sprayer and jar. This should be done in between colors to ensure that there is no mixing of colors and also at the very end so that you may reuse the sprayer on a future project if you so choose.

No, DuraCoat Clear is an extra step you can take for extra protection. It is not required. Many people use the Matte Clear to keep the sheen down but Satin Clear looks very nice.

Great video. Two questions - for a more contiguous look on the rifle, do you recommend leaving it assembled so the pattern flows from receiver to optic and receiver to handguard? It looks like you're working inside. Are there much in the way of fumes?

You can reassemble the gun when you apply the stencils. We recommend that you fully disassemble to clean and degrease first. You will need to work in a well ventilated area or outside.
