Lyrics:
Do you believe in love?
Do you believe in shame?
And if love can conquer all
Then why do we only feel the pain?
I heard you speak my name
Heard you singing The Stones
Maybe heard you laughing in a line of static
On my telephone
So why your eyelids are closed
Inside a case of rust
And did you have to change
All your poet's fire into frozen dust?
I try to justify it
To learn from your mistake
But where's the stupid lie that has to make its point
With such a pointless waste?
Come out
Do you believe in shame?
Do you believe in love?
And if they taste the same
Would you love again or abandon both?
I don't think I ever can
Believe my friend has gone
Keep saying it's alright, I'm going to bring you back
But I know I'm wrong
There's nothing I can say
There's nothing left to do
Just that lately I feel so damn lonely
When I think of you
And it may seem selfish now
But I'll hold on to the memory
Until all this fear is washed away
Do you believe in love?
Do you believe in life?
'Cause I believe a little part of you inside of me
Will never die
'Cause I believe a little part of you inside of me
Will never die
Yes, I believe a little part of you inside of me
Will never die
Yes, I believe a little part of you inside of me
Will never die

What an incredibly haunting, dark, and emotionally reflective song by DD. DD at their finest here. I am still perplexed over why this song wasn't a hit on the charts. Absolutely stunning sound and rhythm. The video, lyrics, and sound are simply sublime.

The voice of Simon Le Bon in this Song Is fantastic
@kyachdistent1301

He does have one of THE best voices of any male singer. Once his voice truly matured-ironically on the weak 3rd album, there was no stopping him. He always performs beautifully on ballads-'A Matter Of Feeling', 'My Antarctica', 'Come Undone' and 'Winter Marches On' are 4 obvious examples, but then again, the album this killer No.1 ballad's from is the first to showcase many gentle songs-all of them very different texture and flavour to each other. A very brave move for that dumbed-down S/A/W saturated year of 1988 and Bros here, and slagdonna there and house music, and losers like Phil Collins and Paul Young still hanging about. Let's hear it then for this lovely song, 'Too Late Marlene', 'Palomino', 'Land' & 'The Edge Of America'. In fact, they're all gentle ones on Side 2, wow, never looed at it like that before, despite loving the album for decades, I guess cos they're all so different, unlike how a typical US act would do it. Brave to release a ballad in 1988 considering the year it was, though I know this charted between March and April 1989. Either way, killer song, but that's Duran. Not their fault a load of idiots don't know it. If this was from the highly fantasised 'Save A Prayer' era, be a hit all over. Things are never allowed to change for the best, yet losers are supported no matter what crap they keep boring us with year after year, decades on later. Very effing sad.

I'm just loving rediscovering DD now in my 50s. I missed most of their '90s comeback stuff and had NO IDEA that they had done so many albums since then. It's really a pleasure to be able to say they're still my faves. They've got such a wonderful discography, even the undersold albums have real gems.

@kyachdistent1301 6 ай бұрын
@@Sammilicious70I never understand why people 'lose touch' with an act, as if they emigrate to the moon or something. People choose to lose touch with an act. It was all-"oh the screaming phase is over now, we're into the late 80s with crap like slagdonna, bon jovi, S/A/W and c/rap so let's not bother with them." To me, you only shrug off a band or singer if they lose their appeal and become crap, like some have, though Duran never did. In fact, their worst original album was done very much near the start-that silly record of 1983 that happens to house 'The Reflex'. I still own it and play it, as displays my loyalty, but it's pitiful compared to all they've done since, it was a case of too quickly recorded and mixed so much that anything valuable there (doubtful) was lost. Hell, their best 1983 song 'Secret Oktober' they didn't even put on it, which says it all! Way over 80% of DD's best stuff has been done SINCE their 1st so-called split when all the little girlies left them.

@@robmccluskey6906 They are very similar sounding and yes it is hard miss, but I like Suzie Q and this song alike. A great part of art I think is influence. Sometimes bands mimic sounds without even intending to or even really being much aware. At the time it's likely a forethought. The same thing happened with Coldplay's "Talk" and Kraftwerk's "Computer love" . Seriously, It's actually pretty interesting how that happens sometimes. I Think it's neat.

Larry Wilson And otherwise, in a regard of the "it's a shame nobody else seemed to get it", that's quite an inaccurate assertion. I recall reading an interview with Simon LeBon many many years ago and he was perplexed that this song didn't perform well in the charts. I think he and the band were floored that it didn't do well. I am old enough to remember when it was released, they had been around for about 8 years at that point and I think it was that moment in every band's career where the public is distracted by new things and start to move on. Their next album "Liberty" barely made any impact at all, though I recall the single "Serious" being played and I still enjoy that song greatly. Hard to believe now but they were bordering on being uncool at that time, especially in light of the great new stuff coming out of Manchester and of course grunge happening in the the States. But then they released "Ordinary World" and accomplished what is probably the greatest comeback in rock history...

ndoris Too fem,. I mean, if you like feminine guys then I guess so, but he pretty much just looks like a girl. If you're into mean actually looking masculine then I'm thinking Roger or Simon would be choice.

Ha!! 3 years after you posted this and I've got to say, this is one of my favorite albums too, AND the first time I've ever seen this video! I agree that Nick just screams "artist" in every frame you see of him, but, since he was my first celebrity crush, all I hone in on is John. Did they do a video for Too Late Marlene? Hmmm, off for a google search.....

@@masonhyden3628 if men had half the balls as he did to look that good now a days they'd hardly be "fem". John looks very frail and Simon looks unhealthily over weight. Nick looks like a modern day David Sylvain in this and its gorgeous.

Brilliant on every level. A couple of decades later and this song still pulls at some heart strings inside of me. Simon's vocals are so melancholic and the song is pure magic. Defining moment for me in my life this song. Thanks DD.

Like many of the other people commenting here, I don't understand why this song was never a hit. The music, the lyrics, and the video are so beautiful, haunting, and meaningful. I also love the fact that the video shows a lot of Nick, as he is my absolute favorite, and is especially beautiful in this.❤ Everything about this song and video is a true work of art!

roxette2...Simon's childhoos friend David Miles who died of an overdose. JT explains here that the dedication was later made to Miles, Warhol and Sadkin too...but the original inspiration was David Miles's death..one of three songs SLB wrote in tribute to Miles..the other 2 being Ordinary World and Out of my Mind.

I love this video. I have all their CDs, but I never really gave this song much attention until I watched the video for the first time a couple months ago...now I love the song. Their videos have always been beautiful, sometimes sad, but always artistic and entertaining. They have always been unlike any other band from the early 80's 'til now...that's why they have been my favorite band for 33 years.

Duran Duran has taken their music to a completely new level with their 'Big Thing' album. The Simon's lyrics, John Taylor's bass, in many ways original and iconic music video (especially the falling dominoes at the end!) and c'mon, Nick Rhodes is sheer musical genius. A bit underrated Duran Duran song in comparison to the ones like 'Come Undone' and 'Ordinary World'...I totally agree with Nick who said in one of his interviews a few years ago that Duran Duran didn't have overrated songs, just underrated ones.

I don't think that I've ever heard a song when Simon Le Bon's voice wasn't beyond incredible. Duran Duran are one of my favourite bands. They are solid and talented musicians, great writers and Simon Le Bon has one of the best (if not the best) voices in rock and roll. Their early work which was very popular is still great to listen to, and even now at 56 years old, I can put on some of their later works, and it stirs up my deepest emotions. I am acrazy person whose world (in both thought and feeling) has been turned upside down and pretty much stolen from me - but thank good tht embedded in music is something that can momemtarily remove my thoughts and emotions cfrom the never-ending cruelty and chaos here 24-hours a day. Truly talented singers, in my opinion have music in their voices, and soemthing else that I don't have the words to describe - and it is in these moments when I realize how truly talented they are as a band and how many peoples lives they touched. From album to album, their sound and style matured. "The Winter Marches On" was a song on Notorious that blew me away; I was working in a t-shirt shop on the Wildwood, New Jersey Boardwalk and I would listen to the entire Notorious cassette at the time, and I would stand at the front of the store that was built on the actual boardwalk and stare out to the ocean and travel in my thoughts and emotions to the most beautiful and tranquil place; and on days when the sky was filled with the most incredible rain clouds of all shapes sizes and shades of greys and blue's the sky would appear to be glowing and almost playing in harmony to the music. And their following album Big Thing - when I listened to Side Two of the album/cassette and disovered the the song "Land"..I remember saying to myself in the most profound way "no way; but no way in the most incredible way, and thinking that if g-d/god actually exists or their is a heaven somewhere beyond our earthly perceptions, that Duran Duran's goes music transports me there (in heart, mind and soul); kind of like Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven does for so many people. Thank you Duran Duran for so many, many times throughout your entire career, making music that makes me happy to be alive, and reminds me that the world was once a brilliant place, that was not built on fighting and crazy viruses; and most sadly - fear. Love, gratitude and warmest regards, GarySamuelBesner - Casa Grande, Arizona 85122
