No idea why those Aria basses went out of fashion they look great and sound even better.

Well, they were a fantastic value back in the day. Nowadays, both vintage and new, are quite pricey.

I’ve heard many people complain that the new ones are very inferior to the old ones. I’ve never played one, so I can’t say myself.
@zumazmusic6 ай бұрын
@@joefera8947 I haven't played any of the newer models either. They recently announced a brand new SB-1000, including a (hopefully) lower cost bolt-on model. Fingers crossed

I’ve got three all original Aria’s including two batwings (SB1000 & SB700), but my go-to is my SB600 . I bought an SB404 a while back but it’s vanilla. Matsumoku nailed it.

@@TheOriginalShakey I JUST played an SB-600 last weekend. The parallel switch really changes its character. It was a set-neck model. Really cool collection you have there!

Well done. 👏 No leisurely walk in the park, especially the Night Version! And until you played it, I never noticed that E-F-E variation at the end. Very cool!

Thank You! The other challenge in doing these songs is that I oftentimes learned them when I was much younger, and guess what? I oftentimes "learned them" incorrectly. I have to re-learn these as I go, whilst fighting my muscle memory. I don't suppose they're ever correct in a strict sense. We're always learning, right?! In this case, I too did not know JT did that E-F-E thing. I used to keep going up that A minor scale!

Firstly, happy birthday Pepper, and secondly, you absolutely nailed both versions! The Rio album "slow" version has a laid back and chilled vibe, and though it works, I prefer the "faster" single release version. The faster version has more of a punkier/ new wave energy that really makes you want to get up and dance. Saying that, they could have gone for a third version with a tempo in between the fast and slow versions! And every time I see people like you show what JT actually played makes me love his bass lines even more. So many extra nuances in his playing that aren't always apparent when listening to the full mix, but if you were to take them away the song would lose so much. He's been an inspiration to my own bass playing since I first cottoned on to his excellent playing back in 1984. Oh yes, those SB1000's look and sound so damn sexy! Originals are now so expensive, and as I don't play bass much these days (I've gone more electronic) I can't justify having one for the price they go for. The closest I could get are my two Westone Thunder basses - a 1A model and an early 2A ( the double 'P' style pups and through neck version). They were made in the same Matsumoku factory that the Arias were made in, so they share the same high level of Japanese quality and craftmanship and possibly some parts too. Anyway, great video and thanks for showing us how to (properly) play John's awesome basslines 🙂

I agree with you on the "faster" version. I just always liked it a bit more. It's got a raw funkiness to it. I can distinctly remember being around 13 years old and wearing my Radio Shack headphones while listening to the Night Version on vinyl. I was amazed. I've never had the pleasure of playing a Westone. I know they were also quality instruments. I'd love a Thunder III just like Henry Thomas', from the Rock School series in the 80s. It was a P/J.
