It always astounds me that the 900 year old buildings are still sound buildings standing strong but buildings 60 years old are demolished as they are deemed either un-useable or unsafe. What a beautiful city Durham is. Another to wander around for a week. Thank you for the tour Simon and Will. =-)

It certainly defies logic. You can even say the same for many buildings of the Victorian era. The grand civic structures in US state capitals are a good example of this. My Lunch Break is a good channel for this kind of content.

On my first visit in 2013, I was amazed at how old buildings were still standing & being used. Here in the US, it's sad what is torn down to make way for something that doesn't last but for a few years. Our east coast, New England area have beautiful saved structures that date back to the 1600s.

This was extra special for me. My ancestors dating back to the 1500's lived and died in Durham. It's wonderful to see where they lived, conducted daily lives and raised their children. My grandfather was the first born in the USA. Thank you for letting me join you in sharing this special place.

What a lovely tour, guys, thank you. I really like Durham. I think it's one of the best English cities for its architecture and history - and one of the things I love the most is - did you notice?? NO horrible cables and double yellow lines. I don't know where people park, but if you compare it to a town like Rye, it's great for taking pictures of attractive houses and old buildings without the ugliness of cables, signage, spy cameras and barricades of cars ruining the scene! And at night - when we were there some years back, now, the lighting at night is very subdued, maybe it was gas, had the feel - but yes, well worth spending a few days, if not a week, as you can jump off there to plenty of other places of interest. Oh! from a suddenly stormy Tasmania - thanks, & happy travels. You'll have to go back to visit the Castle, as it is fascinating - I wonder if the student residents appreciate being steeped amidst such history?

Never felt overcrowded by the wheeled dragons on my visit to Rye 14 years ago even when domiciled facing a thoroughfare. There were plenty of quiet country walks around the locality in addition to the historic town itself. The sound of the church bells resounding across that flat land was quite magical. 😊

Went to see a few tribute bands at the cathedral. From the moment they started I realised why they built the roof that way; acoustics were superb and it was as if the whole ceiling was a speaker. There was no mistake; the bishops words were meant to come from above.

Our lunch stop on the way up to Northumberland, lovely vity with plenty to see and lots of places to eat, but like you say Saturdays in Durham are stupid .

The great cathedral was begun during the reign of William 2nd however he seems to have been all but airbrushed out of English history as he is very seldom mentioned. The only time we hear anything about him now is in regard to his mysterious death at only 44 during a hunting expedition though he was a very influential monarch.

The Sanctuary' knocker', correct name Sanctuary Ring is a replica. The original is in the Cathedral's museum.😀

So I looked it up on my photos of the visit and the information board that sits next to the door says knocker? Then I looked up the website and that says ring and it even goes to say there was not evidence it was used as a knocker?? Strange the would then put that in the information board at the door?

@@MemorySeekers It is strange. I guess the great majority of people wouldsay it's a knocker. I have two books about the Cathedral. Durham Cathedral Light of the North describes it as a knocker. Durham Cathedral History Fabric and Culture's index says sanctuary ring door knocker and describes it in the text as a ring on one page, but on another it is called a knocker. Btw, great drone shots.
