I have been primitive camping and bushcrafting since I was a young teenager now at 51 I’m getting more into some light gear light backpacking , I’ve got countless amounts of tents but usually I use a tarp/Hammock set up ( mostly DD ) which is still great for hiking/ backpacking . I’ve been doing some research On a lightweight packable tent , and I am not worried about cost as long as it’s quality after all you get what you pay for,, I was hesitant for a while but finally decided to drop the change on it and I just got it delivered today and after a few minutes of figuring things out this thing is stupid easy to set up ... I can tell it is well designed . I went with the two person because I do like a little space but easy can sleep two people in here no problem, I’ve got to say I am more than pleased that I finally decided to get this, it’s scheduled to rain overnight so I left it set up in my yard so I can put it through it’s water test but from what I can tell she’s going to stay nice and secure, if you’re hesitant about this just do it I promise you you will not be disappointed ..

I'm working hard on the 2P Silpoly version now, and that design will inform the DCF version I hope to do after. Despite not being as light as DCF, the Silpoly 2P is still going to be attractive in comparison. I'm estimating around 33-34oz for the silpoly version, so a little heavier than the DCF StratoSpire Li (26.5oz + stakes) but it'll have wider and longer floor, simpler pitch, much more functional vents, better snow shedding, no struts so it packs into any shape and more than $400 cheaper. Or compared to the TT Saddle, it'll be a couple ounces lighter, much simpler pitch, better snow shedding, doors can be left open in the rain, functional vents, no sag fabric versus quite saggy, higher build quality and tough #5 uretek zips (versus clips) and quite a bit lower price. When I do make a DCF version, I expect it'll be a hybrid/single wall partly to make it extremely light and partly to better differentiate it from the silpoly version. So the 2P DCF version will be similar in weight to something like a Duplex, but offer a long list of functional advantages.

Hello, How much was it?
@MattShafter6 жыл бұрын
Re: what John Abela said: yeh, 6 of those buckles would start to add up in weight. If you can't get cuben going, how much could you get this stripped down to by lighter silpoly's? What weight is the no-see-um? Is the addition of the extra corner "daisy chain" material a place to save weight in the future? Would it be ok to remove those line locs and use knots? Has the tent been tested in a wind tunnel with just the 4 stakes employed? How did the "sharp side" handle a tough wind load with all stakes employed? Cuben can be used in any of the angles presented here correct? If you made this single wall cuben, stripped to 14-16oz and 450$ it would be one of the most compelling 1p shelters ever made; and you know I think about these things! How tall are you? Are you wearing Prana Brions in this vid, what are those?
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
Geez those are some specific questions :) I can't imagine too many tents where you'd get answers to those, but here goes... The X-Mid includes 16.2oz of sil/PU poly and 4.8 oz of noseeum, so if you ditched absolutely everything else (zippers, clips, buckles, reinforcements, grommets, webbing etc) you'd end up at a 21oz tent. Fly zippers add 2.2 oz, inner zips at 1.3oz, so getting close to 25oz without including the reinforcements, grommets, webbing, guylines, clips, buckles etc. So there isn't a ton of weight to be shaved in the hardware. You could certainly clip the LineLoc'3 on the larger side of the door since these are rarely used (minus 2g x 2), you can also remove the peak guylines to save 11g. Not much advantage to removing the rest of the LineLoc's considering the hassle knots adds. You could probably get it to 27oz, but most of the weight is in the fabric so big reductions in weight would require a much lighter and less durable fabric like 7D nylon or 0.5oz DCF. No wind tunnel testing but lots of field use. If you're expecting stiff winds then it's ideal to deploy the peak guylines and these should be angled somewhat towards the broad side as shown here: massdrop-s3.imgix.net/img_comment/WfwXOaKZT664cnQHjQSC_ScreenShot2018-07-09at5.52.56PM.png?auto=format&fm=jpg&fit=min&h=425&dpr=2 Yup this shape would work well for cuben. Since most of the weight is in the material, a cuben version would be far lighter. It would be more of a nice product but I'd love to do a 14-16oz singlewall DCF because I think it would be so much better than the tents available in this category now. I'm about a 1/8" under 6 feet. Not Prana Brions - just cheap pants.

Nice! You combined offset-poles with diagonal inner to create a super easy-to-set-up tent, requiring only 4 stakes like the Notch but without the additional weight and bulk of struts. However, I think the additional use of the two door stakeouts will be necessary to keep the tent's shape in almost any wind. But there are other advantages over the Notch, and I want one, in cuben!
@durstongear5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The Notch is a good tent and IMO the strongest competitor, but this is only slightly heavier than the Notch (~1oz) for a long list of advantages: - Substantially more spacious (can sit up anywhere inside). - Better snow shedding because no low angle roof panels - Even simpler pitch because no pre-measuring poles - No struts (avoids packing hassles) - Factory seam taped - Tough #5 water resistant zips instead of a hard to use clips - Larger vents that open/close - More robust hardware (e.g. buckles at the peaks instead of mitten clips) - Beefier guyouts - No sag fabric - $115 lower price The advantage of the Notch is basically that it's slightly lighter, although even that isn't clear because it still needs seam sealing so it tends to wind up at 28oz as well: sectionhiker.com/tarptent-notch-tent-review/ As for the peak guylines, they certainly beef it up and I would deploy them in stiff winds but it is surprisingly robust without them. I don't think I've ever actually used the peak guylines in the field outside of deliberate testing. One trip ended up being really windy and I thought I might regret only bringing 4 stakes, but it handled it fine. Here are some pictures of the tent holding up quite well to 6" (15cm) of snow WITHOUT the peak guylines: www.trek-lite.com/index.php?threads/dan-durston-massdrop-x-mid.4960/page-12

Hi Dan Will you get this, I wonder? Got the mid x 1P. Thank you great tent. Would you please advise how to use the xtea anchor points along the sides of the tent. Do you put a peg through the cloth sewn in loop or should you attach a small guy loop first? If so, how? Thanks. Imran
@durstongear3 жыл бұрын
Hi Imran, I'm glad you are liking the tent. It is best to put a small loop of shockcord on those extra stake points if you want to use them. We don't supply that ourselves because we find that people start to use them when they shouldn't (to compensate for bad pitch). Ideally everyone would have a tight pitch without those, and they're only used for extra support in high winds and snow. So yes we recommend a loop of shockcord if you want to use those. Regular cord works too but shockcord is better. The 3/32" size is ideal. If you don't know where to get some, you can get it here for $0.35: www.questoutfitters.com/narrow_roll_good_products.htm#SHOCKCORD_&_ELASTIC_CORD_

@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah it's awesome. IMO it's the best tent out there in the rain with the easy setup, protected entry, no sag fabric, large vents, double wall, etc. The 1P is going to open for more pre-orders before too long. Most likely it'll open in November for 3-4 weeks. If you don't want to miss it, you can click the "request" button on the X-Mid page and it'll give you an email when it opens. We've ordered 1000 tents are currently sold 670, so the production run will likely sell out during the next "drop". The 2P is still under development but the first prototype arrives with me tomorrow. The floor on that one is 20" wider and 5" longer than the 1P (so roughly 48" x 92") but that might change. The 2P is looking pretty good in the photos and many of the details are shared with the 1P so we might have that ready for a pre-sale in 2-3 months with orders arriving 7-8 months later. So July is a possibility but cutting it tight.

Very interesting design and super fast pitch!! The only two complaints i have are the velcro vent, i would have liked to see button snaps instead maybe two or three and lastly is the waterproof rain fly zipper. I have owned tents and packs with this very kind of waterproof zipper and over a short period of time the waterproofing slowly falls apart. The mystery ranch pack company has gone to more of a heavy duty rubber style waterproof zipper on thier tri-zip packs and this kind of zipper is way more durable and will last for years and years. This kind of waterproof zipper does add a little weight and the zipper itself may not be a smooth running but keeping rain out and longevity are the main things. If they did these 2 changes this tent would be the best tent out there i think! It would totally be worth the added cost and few ounces of weight gain in my opinion. Still a great tent!! Hike on!!
@durstongear3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments. We are substantially reducing the amount of velcro at the vents in an update this coming fall. We'd like to do something else besides velcro, but other options have downsides too, such as snaps being hard to operate with cold fingers. We're looking at options. For the zippers, we are using #5 Aquaguard zips that are a quite a bit more durable than the #3 version most tent companies use. Also, the outer PU coating on the zipper will last a long time here because it's a straight zipper (not curved like many tent zipper which adds a lot more strain/wear) and the #5 zippers have thicker coatings than the #3s. It's possible they do wear out at some point, but I don't see it as a problem because we have 12,000 tents out there now and no one has ever reported any issue with the coating falling apart. An even tougher zipper would be nice, but our zippers are already heavier and more durable than what almost all competitors use, so we can't go to something much heavier yet and still have a competitive product.

@@durstongear Wow what an in depth reply!! I really appreciate that!! It is an amazing tent! Affordable too! Packability looks great with this tent. I love the horizontal stacking method. Kinda need that with the ultralight 35 & 40 Liter roll top packs these days. One of the main key features i really like about this tent too is the fact you only need 4 stakes! 5 if you count the door stake. That in itself is pretty amazing for a trekking pole style non free standing tent. Unlike some trekking pole tents like the z-packs duplex or even the gossamer gear the one take 8 and sometimes even up to 12 stakes to get a proper pitch. That is just too many stakes to deal with, not to mention their condensation problems and high cost! I may have jumped the gun on the durability of your waterproof zippers. Alot of the longevity of any tent or piece of gear is how well you take care of it i guess. I always try my best to do that. You said you are going to be reducing the amount of velcro so what do you think about magnetic vent closure instead of button closure? Sorta like on tarp tents double rainbow Li. They use them on the doors. People seem to like them especially in colder temps. Are they cost effective or no? Really, really smart features in this (love dropping the poles through the vents and that guy lines are optional). Nice job! I assume the inner can be removed?
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah the inner can be removed. There are small buckles at the two peaks and clips at the four bottom corners. You can remove it and store it separately if the fly is really wet to keep it dry, and then re-insert it once the fly is pitched. And you can pitch both the fly and inner separately. The fly will accommodate two without the inner.
@dezeman80624 жыл бұрын
I'm 193cm (6'4?), do you reckon I will fit? This tent looks very promising.
@durstongear4 жыл бұрын
Some people are happy at 193cm/ 6'4" but it depends on a few factors. If you have a thinner pad, are a side sleeper (not as straight) and aren't picky on space then it works. Whereas if you sleep straight on a thick pad and don't want your bag to brush the mesh at all, then you'd likely find it short. The X-Mid has generous 6-7" gaps between the inner and fly, so brushing the mesh a bit is normally not a problem (as long as you have a good pitch so the fly is tight). At 6'4" you'd likely touch it lightly but regularly.
@johannesjr1234 жыл бұрын

Nice overview! Do you have any idea about how to get the poles nice and taut if you're using a Z style pole with a handle flick lock? It seems like the flick lock would be tough to get to so you might need to open the door in order to tighten up the pitch? let me know if this makes sense
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
This is a little tricky to explain, but hopefully you can recall how in the setup video I show that when only one peak is erected, there are lines of tension from that peak to all four corners. This is true regardless of whether the door is open or closed. So the location and height of the peak is set by this, and does not rely upon tension along the door zip. So the tent won't end up mis-pitched, nor be falling over and flopping mid-pitch if the door is open. With some tents you don't want to open the door until the shelter is fully erected. All that to say that you can certainly open the door to insert the pole and it will still pitch fine. With a Z style pole with the lone flick lock near the handle this is what you'd want to do. Same with a 2 piece adjustable pole where the adjuster may be hard to reach via the vent. With a 3 piece pole like my LG CP3's, I pre-extend the flick lock nearer to the handle and then when I insert the pole via the vent I can fine tune the length using just the smallest flick lock within easy reach.
@greygardens816 жыл бұрын
Good explanation. Thanks, Dan!
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
Another option would be to just pitch it handle up because then you could access the Z style flick locks via the vents. I like using the grommets but you could save a few grams snipping off the grommets and just pitch it handle up every time.
@borealphoto6 жыл бұрын
Cool! I was gonna ask if you could pitch it with the handle up or fat rubber tips. A suggestion for product photos: show it with a long and wide pad and a lofty sleeping bag, especially at the foot end. Too many photos/videos show the person laying on the floor saying "look how much space there is!" when it's obvious a sleeping bag would be pinned against the wall.
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
I'm planning to make a couple more videos over the winter that will show things better. I'd like to do one that is like a "experts" pitching video that explores some of the things you can do, and another one that explains the features, space and advantages. So I'll have pads and sleeping bags in that one. I don't own a long wide pad currently though - I'll see if I can dig one up.

How tall can one be for this tent? Being 6'4" and having large feet is my main issue with picking a UL 1p tent...
@durstongear5 жыл бұрын
6'4" is about the max. If you sleep totally straight on a 2.5" thick pad your sleeping bag will be just brushing the mesh on either end but very lightly. There is a large gap between the mesh and the fly (7-8" on each side), so you'd be nowhere near touching the potentially wet fly. I've had some testers that are 6'2" that said they felt like they have plenty of space and could be a couple inches taller

Do you need a certain size pole?
@durstongear2 жыл бұрын
Almost any pole will work. The X-Mid 1 pitches with the poles about 46 inches but you don’t need to measure you can just extend the pole until it is tight. If you have fixed length poles then they can work if they are that height or a little bit taller but adjustable poles are nicer.

@@gregoryoutdoors Thanks Greg! Both the regular 2P and the 2P Pro are very high quality. The two main differences with the Pro are: 1) We are using a super light but very expensive material (DCF) that weighs about 1/2 but also won't last quite as long. 2) We're using a singlewall design that again shaves a lot of weight but doesn't provide as much protection against condensation as a doublewall. If you're not a weight geek, the regular version is great quality, durable, and very capable. Whereas if you are a weight geek the Pro offers a big weight savings and is still quite capable.

Hi Dan, will using my tent during very sunny and hot days damage it or cause any issues (longevity or otherwise)? Thanks
@durstongear3 жыл бұрын
The X-Mid is made from polyester where one of the big advantages over nylon (that is commonly used) is that polyester is far more UV resistance. It's hardly affected by UV at all. It's still best not to leave it pitched in the sun for a month at a time, but there should be no effects to the tent from UV.
@HGZie3 жыл бұрын

So the inner is connected via a snap buckle and not a stupid mitten hook, that alone makes me want to give a thumbs-up!!
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
Thanks John. The buckles at the two peaks are nice ITW buckles and work really well. I like how easy it is to adjust the tension on the inner. But I'm still using mitten clips at the four corners because four more buckles started to get heavy and I wanted to keep it at 28oz. It's a tough call because I don't like mitten clips either, but I figured buckles at the peaks only was a good compromise. To make the mitten clips less annoying, I thoughtfully designed the inside of the corner guyouts. There is 5/8" webbing and then 1/2" grosgrain, so you can clip to either. If you clip to the webbing, the mitten clip won't come accidentally undone because the webbing is thick, but of course the clips can be a pain to unclip. Whereas if you clip to the grosgrain, then the inner will stay clipped when it pitched (under tension) but can easily be slid apart because it's so thin it slides right through the clip. So if you prefer to keep the inner inside the fly, clip to the webbing, whereas if you prefer to remove the inner between pitches, then clip to the grosgrain. I'm all ears if you have a better idea.

@durstongear4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about that. The grommet used here is the same standard size used in trekking pole tents from a variety of companies (e.g. Hilleberg, TarpTent, Black Diamond etc). With the X-Mid and these other tents, it is possible for a pole tip to be dislodged. That could happen if the tent wasn't that tight, so the fabric was able to lift off the pole tip in a gust, or if the fabric was tight but the wind gust was simply extreme. We've sold about 8000 tents now and only had 1 or 2 reported incidents like this.

If you don't use trekking poles you can buy folding carbon fiber poles that are designed just for setting up tents/tarps, so they are lighter, cheaper and smaller than carrying trekking poles. I've written more about this at the link below, but basically the Ruta Locura 450 poles are really nice for setting up tents and tarps. If you got a 42" pole with an 8" adjuster (so it ranges from 42 - 50") then it would work well since the X-Mid sets up at 46 -47". www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent/talk/2251298 www.rutalocura.com/tent_pole_450.html

Do you think 8 mm DAC aluminum poles would be strong enough to pitch this tent? My friend just ordered the 1p and is anxiously waiting for the tent to arrive. He would not be using it in extreme exposed conditions and he is looking for a lightweight option. The 8 mm poles would be about as light as similar length carbon fiber poles, but less expensive. 8mm is on the thin side. Most aluminum poles for tents are 0.450 - 0.490" (11-12mm). I expect the 8mm will work but will have quite a bit of flex so you can't crank the tent as tight, nor weather as serious of winds.

Hey Dan. Can you comment on how we'll this fly will perform in snow and wind compared to a sil khufu?
@durstongear5 жыл бұрын
The two main differences here are the material (nylon vs poly) and the slopes of the walls. The X-Mid uses polyester which is easily better in the wind and snow than the nylon the khufu uses. The issue with the nylon is that it expands a lot when wet, so you get a limp tent that catches a lot more wind and snow. See here: thetentlab.com/MoonLightTents/PolyNyl.html While some will point out that nylon is stronger, it actually loses about 15-20% of its strength when wet, and also degrades far faster from UV, so it's quite likely than after a moderate amount of use polyester is at least equal if not stronger (for the same weight of fabric). As for wall slopes, these are a trade off because steeper walls are better for snow while shallower walls are better for wind. But one thing that is always good is to have consistent slopes so there isn't a weak link (e.g. a tent with shallow walls but one vertical side still is risky in high winds). The X-Mid has exceptionally consistent walls slopes in that all of the sides are at about the same angle, and this angle in moderately steep, so it works extremely well in the snow (for a trekking pole shelter) and also quite well in the wind. A mid like the Khufu does have shallower walls slopes and less area at the top, so it would be better in high winds, except that the X-Mid has the advantage of peak guyouts that strengthen it up a lot so it is at least equal. For a more in depth answer on this topic check out my replies: www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent/talk/2290461 www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent/talk/2278728

How does this tent hold up in windy conditions? Are there additional loops on the fly that can be used for guide out lines that can be added to make it more taut? Also, would this be considered a 3 season tent?
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
Hi KG82, The tent works well in windy conditions. I've written a longer answer on that subject here: www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent/talk/2278728 If you want to really secure the tent down, you've got the stakes at the 4 corners, plus more optional stake out points along the bottom near the midpoint of each side. So there are 8 stakes total around the bottom plus 4 more at the doors (two on each side), so really up to 12 stakes around the bottom if you want. Plus you've got guylines coming off both peaks which really make it super solid. The tent is solid enough for moderate winds without the guylines, but if a storm is really rolling in then the peak guylines are a good call. In windy conditions all you really need is the four corners + 2 peak guylines. If you end up pitched broadside to the wind, then probably a good idea to put one or two more stakes along the base of that side. So yeah it would easily be a 3 season tent. It also sheds snow extremely well because it doesn't have flat roof panels like most tents. So it does well in a 6" dump of snow. Having a solid fabric instead of mesh for the inner would be ideal in the winter, but other than that it's very capable in the winter. I'm not saying it's a mountaineering tent for pitching on stormy summits, but it's incredibly capable for an ultralight tent.

I'm looking for a follow-up video or followup review on this tent, preferably from someone who used it on one of the big 3. I've never owned an ultralight tent or a trekking pole tent, so this seems like a big step for me. Also, have there been any modifications to the tent since it was first released (ie the length of the cord attaching the inner?)
@durstongear5 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick, I'm not aware of any long term users that have written a review at this point. Many people have used it a lot (e.g. one pleased fellow emailed me a few days ago who has used it over 100 nights in Montana including portions of the CDT) but thus far haven't written public reviews. The best source for reviews is still the 92 user reviews on Drop which are written by real users and not edited/moderated/screened in any way, unlike many competitors (e.g. companies like Zpacks, HMG etc "moderate" their reviews which really means not approving any that aren't 5 stars, hence why every single review on Zpacks.com is 5 star even for products that were launched with big flaws like the Plexamid where the struts broke on a lot of people). Anyways, internet reviews are great, but also a tricky thing because of how they can be influenced by affiliate marketing or manufacturer screening. The 92 reviews of the X-Mid on Drop are often by people who have only recently got the product, but some of them are from people with quite a few days on it. Besides a few KZbin videos, the only other review I'm aware of is Section Hiker: sectionhiker.com/drop-x-mid-1p-tent-review/ One of the goals with the X-Mid was to make trekking pole tents more accessible to a broader audience by not being super complicated to set up (like most trekking pole tents). So it is a lot simpler to pitch than most, and nearly everyone finds they can master it pretty quick, but if someone does have an issue with the tent it is commonly because they aren't pitching it well. For example, the inner tent is designed to clip tightly inside the fly so the floor is nice & tight, but if the fly is pitched then that tension from the floor will distort the loose fly. A handful of people have reported finding their inner cords short, but in nearly all cases I've been able to verify that the cords are the correct length and the problem is just that the fly isn't being pitched tight enough to handle the tension from the floor. The cord length is easily user adjustable, so users can easily make it longer (and I could spec longer cords) but I'd rather keep it so that the floor is nice and tight when pitched properly. I have a new video out that goes into the pitching is more detail and talks about how to get the lower part of the fly tight, which is key for properly holding the floor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYfFoIWZrL5phpI With regard to modifications, the only one (besides an update to the logo) is that we did find that a small portion of trekking poles have tips that are too long to work properly with the grommets. They extend too far through the grommet before seating, and thus can damage the fly. So for the current batch we have revised the design here to work better with these poles (e.g. a bit lower grommet and with more reinforcement above).

Hi Dan, I picked up an x-mid and have taken it out a couple of times. Overall I'm very impressed and think it's a great tent! Seeing as I want to spend many more nights in it, I wanted to ask you a couple of things: I've been having some trouble with the zippers, they get stuck often and are very difficult to close with a taut pitch. Part of this is probably because I live in the desert. Anyway, do you have a recommended zipper care product/routine? And do you think asking a seamstress to sew a strap (with a clip) to the bottom of the doors is a good idea, or would it likely ruin the fabric? Thanks Dan, and great job with the design!
@durstongear3 жыл бұрын
Glad you're liking the tent. We use #5 zippers on these that are tougher than the common #3 zippers most UL tents use, but they can still be affected by dirt/grit. Check out the zipper brush/lube from GearAid called zipper care. For the tension, if the zipper is fully done up when you pitch the tent then it shouldn't be too hard to close, whereas if it is part way open then it's possible to overtighten the side of the tent and make the zipper hard to close, so I'd watch the tension on the sidewalls. You can add a buckle at the base if you want. A few people from the windy UK have done that but we've never had one of the #5 zippers fail and most companies using these zippers don't do that (e.g. TarpTent).

I haven't had it in a wind tunnel to precisely measure wind, but I've used it in the field in stiff winds. The tent is going to hold up well. Without any guylines is quite solid so it's sturdy in the vast majority of conditions, and then if it is quite windy then you can deploy the guylines from the peaks to make it really sturdy. If you have the smaller sides pitched into the wind and the peak guylines deployed, it could take some really serious winds. Probably best to add a few more stakes around the base too (there are many extra stake out points you can use to spread the load).
@heavyhammersforge92406 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the additional explanation for reinforcing your X-Mid Tent concept in windy or adverse weather conditions. Admittedly, I own a tunnel type tent by Hilleberg Enan which has been great when I was in the states. Now, I am very interested in moving on from a tunnel type tent, it does have it's advantages, weight not being one of them, but in tropical weather conditions, weather changes fast and a 2/2.5 season tent is really what I need. Hence, I am actually very interested in moving to a more minimalist fast-pitch setup like your system where function is at it's peak in 5 steps, done, small adjustments your in from the nasty weather, this excites me. :> Oh, I forgot to mention, Hilleberg has this video of a snow canon at their sweden office where they blast it at their tent to get some base readings on tent performance. While not super scientific, but a great testimony to "seeing is believing" for consumers. Maybe you can try that hehe. It looks the way the tent is designed, condensation will be hopefully minimal and be carried away from the floor. Have you tried it in conditions likely to produce condensation and how did it do? I really like the room and price of "the One", but this looks like its fairly roomy in the video and will do much better with wet. But on the other hand, the One has more floor space inside. I'm pretty broad shouldered and though X-Mid seems plenty long, I wonder if it will be wide enough for me.
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
Hi Barry, Yes the tent is designed to both minimize condensation and also mitigate any condensation that does occur, because in some conditions condensation in unavoidable in any tent. To minimize condensation you want the optimal amount of air flow. More airflow isn't always better because you are losing heat along with humidity, and condensation depends on the dew point, which is determined by both temperature and humidity. Warmer temps and less humidity is ideal, but excessive airflow reduces both. So you want enough airflow to reduce humidity but not so much you are cooling your tent off to the same temperature as your surroundings. The X-Mid enables whatever airflow you want because you can vary how high the fly is pitched by varying the length of the guylines at the four corners (longer will lift the tent up a couple inches), to get inflow at the bottom and then it has dual large and adjustable peak vents to let the air exit. These are key for venting humidity because warm breath rises. Tents with a lot of airflow around the base but no peak vents can feel drafty while still retaining humidity. To mitigate the effects of condensation, the X-Mid is obviously a double wall so you are prevented from contacting it (compared to a singlewall or hybrid like The One). Also, the X-Mid has a generous gap between the fly and the inner so a light push on the inner isn't going to contact the fly, plus the fly uses no-sag fabric so the fly isn't going to sag on a wet night and stick to the inner and thus eliminate the double wall advantage. Lastly, the X-Mid avoids have low angled fly panels, so even in rare heavy condensation conditions, it should run down the inside of the fabric rather than drip. Most tents have relatively low angled roof panels, but the X-Mid does not, so it's about as good as possible for keeping condensation from dripping on the inner. On Massdrop I've responded at great length on the topic of how the X-Mid compares to the GG One: www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent/talk/2191674 But in short, the X-Mid is heavier (28oz vs 22.2oz) because it's a double wall and uses a bit tougher fabrics, but the advantages are: - dual doors (vs one) - dual vestibules (vs one) - dual peak vents (vs none) - double wall - modular (fly and inner can pitch independently) - simpler pitch (the GG One requires a special pitch in high winds) - full coverage fly (extends right to the ground to block high winds, snow etc). - more headroom - much more durable floor - no sag fabric - higher HH fabric - requires 2 fewer stakes (saves back some of that 5.8oz disadvantage) - no required guylines (you can remove this from the X-Mid to save 0.4oz) - seam taped (seam sealing The One also negates part of it's weight advantage). - higher end water resistant zips (no rain flap needed, which always snags in the zip). To actually answer your question though, yeah I've used it quite a bit in a wide range of conditions. A lot of my use in the PNW so I'm used to humid conditions. Regarding broad shoulders, the production version should turn out slightly wider (~29") and you can increase that a bit more by not tightening the inner right up to the fly peaks (it connects via webbing on buckles, so you can adjust this). Pulling the inner peaks close to the fly peaks has the effect of pulling up on the sides of the floor. So the actual floor width is about 26 - 30" depending on how you set it. Also consider that the side walls of the inner are vertical (unlike most mainstream tents) so the X-Mid preserves that width and thus stays about 30" wide at the shoulders. I suspect Massdrop will open it up for more orders in a few weeks (mid November) and then that will likely sell out the ~1000 tent production run, so there won't be anymore for a while. Cheers, Dan

With the nylon, the problem is that is still wet, when you are ready to go. It's no longer ultralight with all the water in it. And if you don't have a change to dry it, it's still wet after your day in trail.

@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
Yup. I'm working on a DCF single wall version. It'll cost a lot more, be slightly smaller and a bit less durable (e.g. smaller gauge zippers), but the weight is going to be incredible. It'll be a while though - perhaps a year until the pre-sale. Hoping to get the first prototype started in a couple months. The next version to market will be a silpoly 2P version.

@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
@@Ryan-yi5ro A bit slower than I'd like. I've got the first prototype drawings done but we're still figuring out who best to manufacturer it. So we need to nail that down, then we can start prototyping, and then there's the testing phase before we can even do a pre-sale for production. The DCF version is going to be sweet but less well rounded and more of a fair weather tent. It'll be a single wall design, single vent, not as beefy throughout (e.g. #3 zippers) but super light and cost a lot more. It'll compete with tents like the Zpacks Plexamid and TarpTent Aeon, but likely lighter than both.

Why did U put only one way zipper on the outer tent? It is very useful to have an option to open the door partly from the top side to force the ventilation.
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
You've got a keen eye for detail. I had dual sliders on one of the early prototypes but decided to go with only one slider because I didn't think the weight was worth it. With a heavier gauge #5 zipper the metal sliders are actually pretty heavy (about 6g each or 12g / 0.4oz for an extra slider on each door). I don't think there is much of an advantage to having them because there are vents at the top of the zippers that are quite large and work very well for ventilation. You'd be hard pressed to find an ultralight tent with better ventilation as is. Still, these would be handy in some situations like quickly opening the top of the zipper to toss something inside without bending over, but ultimately I decided they weren't worth the weight.
@MultiAnkr5 жыл бұрын
I thought of this aswell. Would have been great just to keep them at one side, just because when cooking you can never get vents enough. I get it's best to open the door completely, but still

Looks similar in design to the SD High Route, but a bit smaller and a much better price!!
@durstongear5 жыл бұрын
It has some similarity to the High Route (and other tents like the TarpTent StratoSpire, Nemo Rocket, Yama Swiftline etc). The nice thing about the X-Mid is that it avoids the three main downsides of the High Route, which are the lack of vestibules, wind catching (vertical) side walls, and reliance on guylines. The X-Mid starts with a much wider rectangle (67" vs 42") which allow for the sleeping area to be rotated onto a diagonal inside that rectangular fly. This creates vestibules and allows for the poles to be located inward from the edges of the fly so you get a more wind shedding shape that can pitch without guylines. You also don't need to pre-measure your pole lengths because the poles are "internal" to the rectangle, so the pitch is appreciably simpler and needs only 4 stakes. Compared to the revised 2019 High Route, the X-Mid is more spacious (wider, longer, substantially taller and way larger vestibules), more featured (e.g. 2 doors, 2 vents), more stormworthy (better wind and snow shedding) and simpler to pitch for the same weight (28oz). Other advantages include no sag polyester fabric, and the ability to sleep two if you use just the fly.

@@terryboardman789 Yeah there's a lot of advantage to the X-Mid: - Doorways don't let rain fall in when you open them. - YKK AquaGuard (waterproof) zippers instead of basic zippers with flaps (that snag in the zip) - Full doublewall construction protects from condensation and is modular. - Dual vents to reduce condensation (vs no vents). - A lot more headroom because the poles are further apart - More durable #5 zippers (vs #3 zips that commonly wear out) - Quite a bit higher end construction (e.g. no single stitching, raw fabric edges) - Lower price because it's a much better value (SMD sells at retail so they have a lot more markup in their tents) - Lighter when you consider the SMD need seam sealing (+1oz) and more stakes.

Hey Dan, I'm not a tru-hiker but I do a good bit of hiking along the AT and I am planning a solo two week trip at the end of May. In the past, I have just used a tarp at night, and have recently begun looking into light weight tent options. I know this is catered mostly towards hikers looking for an extremely light option, is this something you would recommend to someone like me who will be wanting something pretty light but not break the bank? Also I noticed they are only through Massdrop. Is there a projected date when it would deliver? Cause I need it for May.
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ezra, Yeah this tent is great for anyone looking for a fairly light tent that is still suitable to a wide range of conditions. You can get even lighter tents that aren't as good in the wind/rain/snow, but the X-Mid is good for "reasonable lightweight hikers" in the sense that it works well in all conditions and is easy to use. Many trekking pole tents are very tedious to pitch because they have a ton of guylines etc. Since you've used a tarp, you'd find the X-Mid super easy to use. This tent is a fantastic deal because we are building them in bulk with a slim markup. The actual materials and hardware are higher end that most $300-$400 tents. For example, it uses waterproof zippers rather than cheap zips + flaps, which most $350 tents use. In terms of delivery, the projected ship date on Massdrop is May 24. That is too late for you, but that date is actually quite conservative. These tents are ahead of schedule and we actually anticipate they will ship out in early to mid April. So I can't guarantee that, but it's quite likely you'd have it sometime in April.
@ezramartin-rosenthal4576 жыл бұрын
@@durstongear Thanks for the quick reply! Also, are there plans for another drop in the future, or is this my last chance to get one? Massdrop says I have 20 days left to get in on this. Is it too late for me to order one if I don't do it by that drop?
@ezramartin-rosenthal4576 жыл бұрын
@@durstongear Actually I guess a better question would be: would it be possible for me to order this now and wait and see when they are getting sent out, with the ability to cancel if it went into May? Cause I'd love to get this but I will need something by then.

@@ezramartin-rosenthal457 We are doing one production run of a little over 1000 tents. Once those are sold out, that'll be it for a good while (perhaps a year or more). I'm not sure if that'll sell out in the next 20 days, or if Massdrop will do one more drop early in the new year. Most likely sales will trickle along for the next 15 days and then there will be a big surge at the end, as has happened in previous drops.
@durstongear6 жыл бұрын
@@ezramartin-rosenthal457 I see your second question now. Massdrop charges your card at the end of the drop and then it's non-refundable after that I believe (other than of course actual warranty problems). I did speak to them today and they said it was on track to ship in mid April and that's looking pretty likely since I already have the first one off the production line. So no you couldn't cancel in April or so if the tent wasn't showing up. However, the tents will be sold out by then so I assume you could easily sell it on a backpacking site for what you paid since it'll be one of the only ones available for a year or so. If you're the ruthless type, you could probably flip it for a small profit :)

Have a "the One" but would be interested in thinking about this if could see a price but not about to have to sign up on "MassDrop" just to see the price of it.
@durstongear5 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete, The price is $199. It's quite affordable because we are building it at scale (e.g. >1000 tents) yet without a retail markup. The materials are all high end (e.g. waterproof AquaGuard zips, while the GG One uses regular zips + flap) and so is the construction (e.g. same factory as MSR tents). Massdrop offers them roughly ever second month although they're getting close to sold out. They have another 300 coming this spring which they'll post for sale in another month or so. If you're interested in more info on how the X-Mid compares the GG One, I've written a post on that here: www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-dan-durston-x-mid-1p-tent/talk/2191674 But basically the X-Mid is designed to be a much more versatile/well rounded tent, whereas the One is more of a superlight tent for when the conditions aren't too harsh. The X-Mid has a full coverage fly for full protection in windy conditions rather than a fly that stops short on one side, it is a double wall design (vs single wall) so it is modular and protects you from contacting condensation, and it uses more durable and weatherproof materials (tougher fabric, higher HH coatings, tougher zips). It's also more fully featured (e.g. two peak vents versus none, two doors vs one). So basically it's 5-6oz heavier for a more durable and versatile shelter. Whether that's better depends on when and where you hike.

Looking for a recommendation for tent poles. Want carbon fiber poles that come apart into 3 pieces, but was wondering about diameter recommendations and thoughts of bungee corded together or do they fit tight enough to order something without the bungee cord? (BTW- I contacted Ruta Locura for a recommendation but did not get a response). Thanks,
@durstongear5 жыл бұрын
The bungee is mostly to keep things organized when the pole is folded up - it won't come apart without one when the tent is pitched. Zpacks sells a 5 piece pole that folds up nice and short so it's the same length as the tent: zpacks.com/products/48-carbon-fiber-tent-pole That's lower price and lighter than the Ruta Locura poles, but non adjustable. The Ruta Locura poles are the way to go if you want adjustable length. For diameter, tent poles are often to flexy because they are both skinny and designed to flex. So it partly depends on the diameter but also the wall thickness (for aluminum and carbon) and the weave (for carbon). Generally tent poles are around 0.3" and you want more like 0.45" for poles like this.

@@rdw3171 48" still works pretty well because the tent normally pitches with the peaks at 46-47" but can pitch up to 48" if you have longer cord at the corners, which raises the fly (for ventilation). With 48" poles you just angle them a bit if they're slightly long. Some folks are using them and they have commented that the connection at the peak isn't that solid though, because they have knob rather than a tip that fits into the grommets. You can buy a grommet tip for them to replace the knob though: www.questoutfitters.com/Tent_Poles_433.htm
@rdw31715 жыл бұрын
@@durstongear Zpacks lists the outside diameter of their poles but not the inside. When ordering "grommet tips" from "quest" you will need the I.D measurement of the poles. I ended up with a grommet tip that was too small to firmly fit into the Z-packs poles (I contacted z-pack to get an inside dimension and received no response. It worked out though - I put shoo-goo in the pole tip to fill in the loose area). A lot of people do not use hiking poles. From a consumers point of view, It would be nice to not have to order from 3 different sources to get a product that is ready for use. Have you considered including a tent pole option with the purchase of your tents? It looks like a very good design. I look forward to using it.

@durstongear4 жыл бұрын
Are you sure they're that long? Could be but that's about as tall as fixed poles get. Anyways, unfortunately they won't work. The tent only pitches properly with the poles around 46". If you used 51-55" poles it would end up lifted up a lot which wouldn't work because the inner tent would be getting lifted off the ground. Shorter fixed poles around 46-48" will work, but adjustable poles are ideal for fine tuning the pitch.

Just spitballing here, but if you don’t want to bring shorter poles, have you considered bringing a 6” tall ultralight body-length table? ;-) More seriously, if cost is a significant factor, I’ve been quite happy with the Cascade Mountain Tech carbon cork poles available from Costco (or Amazon) for around $40. Used them with the XMid 1P for entire JMT.
@ttimmons2154 жыл бұрын
@@SrslyJonSweet Haha, thanks for the insight Jon! I may have to look into that table option! :) Couple quick questions since you have experience with this design. Could a slightly too large set of poles be "dug" into the ground a bit to fix the length issue? I would sleeve a latex glove or something on the butt end so the handles stay clean or some other "fix"... Another observation/question - Are you familiar with the Z pole design? They lock in place by sliding the handle up for walking, however if they are unlocked they still sleeve together..So in theory the sections are still "locked" as long as they are vertical or have downward pressure applied..Im wondering if the tension just from the tent pulling down on them would allow me to use my BD poles in the unlocked just slipped together configuration? What are your thoughts on those options?
@SrslyJonSweet4 жыл бұрын
@ttimmons215 I don’t have experience with Zpoles, unfortunately. For your first idea, yes, that could work, but in practice I don’t think you’d want to dig 2 6” holes every night you set up the tent, and - for places like the Sierras above treeline - it might feel near impossible. I specifically anchor my XMid out to rocks in those scenarios because even getting a thin shepherd hook in the ground is too difficult. So I’d really look at a solution that’s easy to deploy each night.

Which poles work best with this tent?
@durstongear5 жыл бұрын
If you're wondering which hiking poles are best, it'll work with any adjustable length pole as long as it has a reasonably normal tip (e.g. an usually fat tip might not fit in the grommet, whereas a super long skinny tip could poke through the grommet and hit the tent, but 98% of trekking poles will work just fine). The height is 46-47" (about 118cm) and even the shortest adjustable poles can extend to that. If you wondering about fixed length poles, 120cm is a common size and that works well. It's normally just slightly too long so you angle it a little bit to take up that extra length and it works nicely. If you don't use trekking poles, then you can get foldable carbon poles to use instead. Ruta Locura sells some nice ones called the 450 poles. www.rutalocura.com/tent_pole_450.html
