I heard Mme and M. Durufle at the Hill Auditorium organ in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the 1960's with my friend John Challis. I cannot forget the mastery of the organ and the music they both presented. It still rings in my ears these many year later. There are somethings you never forget. This recording brings alive their performances again. Thank you.

Yes, I think you probably are. Although i believe Monsieur Durufle may have agreed with you about the Toccata. and personally I think that Monsieur Durufle may have been to harsh with this judgement on his own work, the Suite No 5 as a whole, is a testament to the musical genus of this composer and is a piece I return to time and time again. The St Ouen's Organ continues to be a source of wonderment and serves this piece so well.

Anyone notice how Mr. Bret works this instrument and music to such a degree that the semi-quavers have an actual pulse and rhythm? It's amazing. Either the microphone placement was extremely well thought out or Bret is just this much better at this piece than anyone else. The thematic material starting at 3:00 is beautifully executed and the registration throughout of the highest caliber. I love this interpretation.

DS - this was originally someone else's KZbin upload which I turned into MP3s - and when their account disappeared, I reuploaded it with my own slideshow of photographs. So, the audio quality is far from brilliant. The CD this originally came from is available, but I haven't got it myself (for which read I'm too poor haha!). I still think this is one of the best performances of the Duruflé I've ever heard, along with Virgil Fox's on the Aeolian-Skinner at Riverside, NYC (also uploaded).

nfk jazzer Why? What is better than a Cavaillé Coll for Duruflé?
@nfkjazzer68479 жыл бұрын
+Gianluca Cagnani Hi Gianluca - did you bother to listen to Rawsthorne? I wasn't trying to say either was "better" than the other, just that the Liverpool performance was worth listening to and as such is a perfectly valid performance of the piece.
@GianlucaCagnaniJSBGLORY9 жыл бұрын
nfk jazzer Hi nfk (...) yes I did! I prefere Rawsthorne's interpretation but at the same time I don't change Cavaillé Coll with any other instrument (for romantic-modern, of course)...
@paulcaswell28133 жыл бұрын
For a British organ, Liverpool's is a fine example, but even Farnborough's little Cavaillé-Coll (14 stops, II/P) tonally puts it to shame. S. Ouen, of course, just happens to be the finest organ in the known universe (and probably even further afield).

I must be the only music-lover and organist who thinks this piece is more flash than substance. The middle movement of this Suite is mostly lovely, but the first movement is a jumble too, lots of figuration but musically short.
@stearmankc6 жыл бұрын
If you have that reaction to this piece, I think your knowledge and understanding of this great work is extremely limited, or maybe the piece is just not to your liking. It is said that Durufle himself, didn't like it much. I think the vast majority of organists who have studied it and learned to play it would say that it has a lot more than just flash. It is extremely demanding in almost every aspect. I think everything M. Durufle wrote has plenty of substance. They are not always easy to understand or to perform, but they are consistently quite profound.

Well, I certainly disagree, but I understand where you are coming from. This is not easy music to listen to or appreciate. I happen to like it, but I understand why some people would not. Maurice Durufle himself famously hated this toccata and refused to perform it.
