free tip to devs who want the flashlight thing. Make it a cell phone. Cell phone flashlights turn off and stay off for a bit if leave them on too long. It's a safety feature to stop them from breaking due to the heat the led produces.

They are going to go to video game hell where the great lord of satan will make them play nothing but Slaughtering Grounds for eternity while getting pumped up the butt by satan's massive veiny sweaty hairy penis but then that is ok because they deserve it for making these kinds of games because they are lazy for doing such a thing but then at the same time I think they deserve a second chance because sometimes people improve and learn from their mistakes but most developers don't bother to keep practicing so I think there needs to be some kind of system where developers are rated according to their sin level and that sin level will determine whether they should go to video game hell or not and if they do then they will immediately be teleported to video game hell while satan awaits them naked.

Man, I can already say that the Horror game I created for College is 100 times better the this game, because I actually decide to give players a Flashlight that actually lights up the room and doesn't have a draining battery.
@blondbraid79866 жыл бұрын
I can't for my life think of anyone who actually likes games where the flashlight only lights up a tiny spot and everything is too dark to see, I don't get why people still keep putting that crap in "horror" games. And I have no doubt a college student could make a better game than this in a week, I don't see any effort in the junk in Jim's video.
@zanthor54226 жыл бұрын
The idea is that not being able to see makes things scarier because you don't know if a monster is near until it's right in front of you for TEH MOST ULTIMATES OF JUMPSCARES xDxDxDxDxD. But that's not good horror. It doesn't make things scarier, it just makes them more annoying. Also, the whole 'draining battery with a limited number of extra batteries around the map' thing is really fucking stupid. Because it basically just puts a time limit on how long someone can play the game before they have to completely restart from the beginning, presumably because nobody who makes these games actually bothers to do even the slightest amount of playtesting or thinking.

As an indie dev myself I can tell you exactly why flashlights in video games don't work like ones in real life.The reason the flashlight doesn't light the room up like a real flashlight is a technological limitation. Currently only directional lights support realtime global illumination and bounce lighting. However there is a workaround to this, you could cast a ray in the direction the flashlight is aiming and place a point light at the location that the raycast detects a wall. This would somewhat fix the problem, but light bounces outwards in the color of whatever object it's hitting, which I have no idea how to alter the color of the point light to match the color of the object it's hitting. If any of you aspiring game devs are planning to make a game with a flashlight, this might be something you should look into. There's also light scattering caused by light refracting off of particles in the air, which is also impossible to replicate atm. Still doesn't excuse laziness to make the flashlight ass to use.

There are various types of flashlights. Some really do have a beam with no spill like this one, usually achieved with a lens on the front that focuses all the light into a narrow spot for maximum throw. That said, general-purpose flashlights don't usually do that, because lighting up an entire room is a much more common task. If a flashlight has a narrow beam but enough output that it could light up a room given a better optic, one strategy is to simply point it at the ceiling so that the light bounces back down and you get some nice, even lighting. Unfortunately, some flashlights with a tight spot and no spill are designed that way specifically because they're woefully underpowered, and they can only just manage to put barely enough light into that small area. You could make the flashlight in this game last a bit longer by constantly turning it off and on as fast as you can. You'll technically be in darkness half the time, but you'll still be able to navigate. Some LED flashlights actually regulate their brightness like this, turning off and on hundreds of times per second. The light looks dimmer when the "off" period is longer. This game is bad, though.

Indie devs, if you really want to make a splash and be different with your horror game: 1) set it in daylight, 2) if you must have dark areas then have the batteries in your torch last literally hours and 3) have your protagonist more healthy than your average American. Right from the off you will be automatically more original than 90% of the other horror shit out there.

The question I ask myself is if the developers are that much of cynical money grabbers they decided to go with all the tropes of steam horror games (because that's surely where the money is, right?) or just actual people who are so out of touch with the overall gaming environment they believe this is an acceptable modern videogame experience.
@zanthor54226 жыл бұрын
It's probably some idiot kid who wanted to make a horror game but doesn't know literally anything about horror. The point of Jim making a video about this game is less about the game itself and more about the fact that it is on Steam to further demonstrate his point about how Valve has literally 0 standards when it comes to the games they allow on their platform.

Surely, a splendid marvel of modern design to be envied by all.
