Sometimes, even free is too much. Dark Places calls itself "experimental" but I think it might just be not very good. Oh, Steam! #Steam #JimSterling #SteamDirect #Horror #SurvivalHorror #PC #DirectToVideo

There's a quest chain in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion where you have to go inside the mind of a comatose mage to wake him up. It requires you to solve several jumping puzzles in pitch darkness while using Oblivion's terrible jumping system. This game looks like an entire game built around that quest and this is not a compliment.
@ZionSairin6 жыл бұрын
Mech610 Most of the puzzles were more timing and memory based, actually. It’s actually one of my favorite quests to play because it has some unique mechanics. However if you can jump really high thanks to the acrobatics skill you can skip most of these.

In the developers defense it is the result of an experiment, and I definitely have gotten psychological horror vibes from trying to even mod a game, much less make one. So maybe it was horrific for them. I need to stop stretching my lines out

Game devs, you can make a horror game that _isn't_ super dark. Really. You can. We have the technology. (I know YT's possibly made the video footage even darker, but I think adding a brightness filter to _this_ is too little too late.)

My personal one are jumpscares. I cannot take a horror movie/game seriously if they have jumpscares. It's the cheapest trick in the box, because it relies on a reflex. If you are watching a screen and I throw a cat at you, you'll be startled and flinch. That doesn't make me David fucking Lynch.

The first game I encountered the environment changing on you that did it PERFECTLY was Amnesia A Machine for Pigs. The game is really slow and builds up the horror without scares or chase sequence for quite a while and it's really effective. Several hours in, you're exploring one of the first areas that's pretty open where you have to do a number of different things to find your way through, and it's exactly dark enough that when you're lamp is off half the time hiding from monsters you can get somewhat lost without totally losing track of where you are. There was a time when I was hiding from a monster and searching around in some dark rooms and hallways that I because suspicious that I had gotten lost. I literally thought "wtf I was SURE there was a hallway here". This happened a few more times where a corridor didn't go back the way I expected it to or something but because of the hiding and the preoccupation with solving the environmental puzzles made it impossible for me to be sure if something fishy was actually going on or if I was just nervous and distracted and getting lost. This whole sequence culminates in a mandatory "classic" amnesia-game monster chase where you're slamming doors open and desperately closing them behind you until finally I ran through a door, my adrenaline at its peak, turned around to close it and BAM I was staring at a stone wall in a room near the entrance to the whole area. I was absolutely floored, because it confirmed my suspicions that something really weird and supernatural was going on on a big scale aside from pig-monsters roaming the halls, the exact same way it would for the protagonist of the game. This sequence also masterfully served as an in-gameplay segue to the latter half of the game where the Machine for Pigs becomes less literal and more figurative and symbolic of the protagonists misdeeds and inner demons Silent Hill style. Seeing the amazing rug-pull potential of such a gimmick wasted on drivel like this makes me sad.

Jim, if you're doing horror games for Halloween, check out the Painscreek Killings. I got it on sale last week and the reason it genuinely got me was because it didn't advertise itself as a horror game, but rather as a mystery game(which it is, for the most part). So when I started figuring out I was being stalked(doors opening and shutting, power being cut, etc.) I just assumed it was somebody trying to interfere with my investigation. I didn't suspect any supernatural forces of any kind because I thought that the game was fully grounded in reality. So despite security records, first-hand accounts, summoning circles, and even photographic evidence, I never came to the conclusion that there was a ghost. Until I saw her. Staring out at me from the woods. Garbed in a maid's outfit, standing watch over a dead man's house. Standing perfectly still, so still I could have missed her. I quickly took a picture with my camera, but as I moved to get a different angle, my vision obscured but for a moment, she vanished. The reason I think I like this style of horror so much is because it wasn't trying to shock me. The monster didn't leap out from a corner, get up in my face and start screaming; it just watched. And now that it could be literally anywhere at all, it feels almost omnipresent; like there's this sense of dread following me wherever I go. And I could leave at any time, my car is at the front waiting for me. But there's still a story here: truth's to be uncovered, a mystery to solve. And, hell, I'm playing as a journalist, so that's my job right? Even though the guy before me wound up disappearing. Also, it's made in Unity, so that also fits the running theme.

It lets you make 'games' without using any code, just by putting all the shit assets they give you. And every game built on it looks exactly the same...
