My theory is that Grandpa didn't work in railroad He worked at the steel mill, and the reason he knew the lights would go out is because every time he rode that train the lights would go out and every time he rode that train the conductor would play polka

That's what I'm thinking. Remember the conductor was familiar with the 'haunted train' story, so this theory tracks. Phil made the story up over time on many bored rides to and from his night-shift at the steel mill, taking mundane details from his commute and transforming them into supernatural phenomena. The makings of a classic urban legend.

My two favorite Hey Arnold ghost episodes was when Arnold and Gerald went to go find a ghost inside the bordering house it's pretty forgettable but the atmosphere was so aesthetically pleasing I like it. My second favorite episode was the ghost bride, I was surprised on how much they were able to get away with in that episode. First the ghost bride killing her soon to be husband and sister like that scene surprised me so much as a kid and then the she committed suicide afterwards like damn also that chase scene where the "ghost bride" was chasing them gave me chills.

I had a similar unsettling feeling specifically from and episode of the Wild Thornberries with a ghost in the woods. More specifically the part at the end where the trees look like a face. Another episode that messed me up is a halloween episode of Recess made up of three short stories. The Miss Finster graveyard/ Zombie attack was fun but the whole glasses under the desk proving it was real always messed me up. There's something about horror elements in normally down to earth shows (Gonna ignore the magic of Eliza talking to animals) the mess me up good. This ep of hey arnold too.

As a kid, the only Hey Arnold 'spooky' episode that actually scared me was Four-Eyed Jack (yes, I know, the lamest one probably) but I freaking LOVED the rest of the others that were clearly more scary. The Ghost Bride, The Haunted Train, The Headless Cabbie... I remember looking forward to two parts of the spooky episodes: the amazing storytelling of either grandpa or Gerald (Gerald, you inspired a lot of kids like me to be storytellers), and the spooky end where the magical realism would happen and we'd be left wondering, or realizing, that the tale was real. Hey Arnold really never gets old for a 90s kid.

I think its very easy to explain what happened. This episode and The Headless Cabby episode, both utilize similar tricks. Lots of spooky things happen, but they can be rationalized away. And the real horror happens toward the end of the episode. The train is actually haunted by the ghost of a mad engineer who makes the train go off its rails. The same woman shows up and asks a cabby to help her find her dog and offers him a scarf who laughs maniaclly at the end. Which implies there is a very real undercurrent of supernatural things that happen in-universe, but tend to be dismissed out of hand for how 'preposterous' it all is.

As a Steam Locomotive Connoisseur I have to really give it to Hey Arnold's animators, since for the close-up front shots, the detailing of the Engine is spot on, with the exception of the rods and valvegear but still, good overall. Engine 25 is actually based on the Norfolk & Western K-1 Class 4-8-2 Mountain type Locomotives. Look them up and you'll see for yourself. This Episode never scared me, I absolutely loved it because my Grandpa told me similar stories as a kid, and my favorite part of the whole episode aside from when Engine 25 stops at the station, is the end when Grandpa says "Well... I wouldn't say that..." and it pans to the Engine rushing by and showing that the story was true and her Original Engineer is still with her. And man that's a catchy tune. This whole episode appeals to my sinister side. The only spooky episode of Hey Arnold that scared me was another steam-related episode, 4 Eyed Jack. The part where his huge Boiler explodes in the basement is what got me. (BTW, just so you know, they're called Engines, not *trains*, the Train is the line of cars it pulls behind it. So just call it Engine 25 when referring to the Locomotive itself, and the Train when you're referring to both the Engine and the Cars/Coaches it's pulling. Hence Freight Train or Passenger Train, Second, Conductors DO NOT Run the Locomotive. I cringed every time you called the Engineer a Conductor. The ENGINEer runs the ENGINE. On a Passenger Train, the Conductor stays in the coaches, punches tickets, yells all aboard, and keeps things behind the Engine going smoothly among many other non-engine related things. He coordinates with the Engineer about arrival and departure times, sees to the comfort of the passengers and keeps the peace, etc. A Freight Conductor keeps track of the Waybills for his consist).

The crazy part is that brainy probably had no idea the connection of what he saw at the end, IF HE EVEN TRULY SAW IT, and that even if he had, nobody would ever know to ask him. And yet it was real and actually out there. But it's engineer, not conductor, the conductor's the guy that takes tickets back in the coaches, answers questions, what have you. Freights have one too, but I'm not entirely sure of their roll. Steam locomotives typically had between two and three guys up in the engine, the engineer drove, the fireman fed the boiler and handled some of the specific functions, and there may have also been a brakeman, but I'm not sure about on passenger trains. On freights the brakeman typically rode in the caboose along with a signalman.

Maybe when he worked there it was a story that was circulating around or maybe he knew someone who road the Haunted Train, but was somehow able to escape or maybe he was one of Engine Twenty-five’s luckier victims.
