I always liked Rolf the most out of the bunch, he always struck that fair balance of overall liking the Ed's (especially Ed himself) while not putting up with their bs. He was the one that was always the most openly friendly with them, despite his own oddities and quirks.

Gerda could actually be an alias being used by someone much closer to Rolf to screw with his head. I bet its Jimmy. The package deliveries are too well timed, almost as if they were sent by 'Gerda' in response to Rolf's reactions as though 'Gerda' were spectating them. Johnny and Jimmy are the closest people to Rolf, and Johnny may have been the delivery boy, but doesn't have it in him to troll Rolf to this extreme, Jimmy does, and is close enough to Rolf to know the ins and outs of his culture and background, and close enough to Johnny to have access to the letters written by Double D to 'Gerda', enough to intercept them and replace them with his own to screw with Rolf under the alias 'Gerda' knowing full well of Rolf's history with the real Gerda to fuck with his head and watch the spectacle. Jimmy's got a hell of a cunning dark side to him, very calculating, very vengeful, very trolly.

Funnily enough, the money Eddy got in No Speak Da Ed was Korean won, and when looking at exchange rates in 2005 (the year the episode was made), a 1,000 won note like that seen in the episode had a rate close to $1 throughout the year, meaning if Eddy had bothered to exchange the money for dollars before going to the candy store, he would've had more than enough to buy the store out of its jawbreakers.

I’d say the episode where Ed was grounded was way worse than this. Eddy: “what happened to the stairs!?” Ed: “my parents took them down because I am grounded” Edd: “that’s disturbing…” I say it’s worse because THOSE ARE ED’S PARENTS! Rolf at least has the excuse of being young and still pretty naive. Considering his all work and no play attitude at times, he probably never learned how to deal with his past trauma.

Honestly this one was so outlandish that honestly I can see why it was deemed as safe. It was so insane it was just funny and seen as not real. The episode I DO question was the episode we first met the Kanker sisters. Even back then there was a VERY uncomfortable vibe in it in far more ways I can name, safe or not, here. This episode was my favorite and still in my top faves of this show. Kicking someone’s ass on screen was absolutely a normal 4pm on CN back in the day. PPG, Johnny Bravo, hell- even Dexters Lab had its fair share of beat ups and wailings. It would have been kinda weird for a show NOT to have that kind of punch humor.

It bugged me too. Had the roles been reversed, it'd been censored, and rightfully so. As for violence, Nickelodeon still had that humor too, and even Disney was known to pull it out with older series like Goofy and Donald Duck.
@googleirl289
@googleirl289 Жыл бұрын
Censorship in cartoons when it comes to violence is definitely a tricky thing to do, but the reason this episode went to air is because when the censors are looking over the episode they're looking for certain things that a child could replicate, along with things like blood. This particular episode is actually a really good example of this because it does have era-appropriate violence in it (Rolf beating Ed with a stick), and also some more outlandish stuff like the oatmeal waterboarding. The reason the torture and the kids being tied up to large shovels was allowed but things like, say, someone hitting another person with a closed fist, is because it's not easy for a kid to replicate scenes like the first example with significant assistance from an adult; however, a child can very easily punch another kid. Another example is the rather infamous episode of Invader Zim, Dark Harvest. Animators were not allowed to add much if any detail to the organs in the show, but Zim stealing them from classmates and eating them was fine because a kid can't do that very easily.

To be honest I figured Gerta sent Double D a feather duster to prank him, not Ed or Rolf. I always figured Rolf just jumped to conclusions in 2 ways: Ed's pen pal is just sending him stuff he finds cool or culturally significant and Gerta is just pulling a light prank on Double D without any greater conspiracy. Rolf has been known to jump to conclusions quickly in the past, and trauma will make someone act in irrational ways. It's just one big comedy of errors.

We had penpals back in the early 2000s, but it was probably a holdover from the transition out of the late 90s, and it finally got phased out by the time smartphones became a thing. It used to still be expensive to make calls on cell phones back then, especially long distances, and not everyone had a computer yet. It's kind of funny to see the show now where cell phones aren't used. Eddy would probably have a YT channel if this was made today and do his scams that way. 🤔

Ed, Edd, and Eddy was a very rare cartoon that was consistently good from season 1 to the end, and even could be argued got better as time went on. It shows that no matter how simple a premise or perpetual episodic goal, with a competent writing and animation team, anything can be a masterpiece of animation. I really loved this show and I really hope it stays untouched from being bastardized by a reboot. The only way I would accept that would be if the vast majority of the team wanted to return to it similar to Samurai Jack’s later season with no executive pressure.

I think that eene did an amazing job of portraying childhood trauma in a whimsical fun way that makes kids who understand how it feels realize that theyre not alone in these experiences and that friends can come through even when adults cant. Going to be honest I think Johnny played a role to snap Rolf back with the “Feather Duster of Tomfoolery”. Maybe Rolf told them how to snap him out of it if something like that happened. Who knows

20:30 Yes, because I can't think of any way this could all be some huge coincidence since it wouldn't explain the feather duster. I assume Gerta and Rolf, or at least their families, knew of and might've had connections to each other back in the Old Country, and perhaps Ed got a pen pal that was in contact with Gerta, and Double D mentioned enough about the kids around them, and possibly Gerta knew enough about Rolf, or was in contact with him and his family enough to know they were in Peach Creek, and with the help of Ed's pen pal, set all this up to poke at Rolf and mess with the Eds for her amusement. With how little we know of Rolf's life in the Old Country, and that he clearly _knows_ Gerta enough to put this all together, it wouldn't be impossible. I wouldn't be surprised that if Greta didn't find a way to mail those things to Ed, she would've mailed them to Double D instead.

I second that and the thing that always struck me as both odd and funny was it wasn't the most popular when it came out compared to Dextar's Lab, Johnny Bravo, or the Powerpuff Girls but it out lasted them all. Ed, Edd'n & Eddy started when I was like in the 4th or 5th Grade and last until just after my senior year of high school, with Halloween, Valentine's Day specials and their movie.

I just love how far they pushed the cartoon violence in an average episode of Ed, Edd, n Eddy. like, the part where Rolf is beating Ed with the Sheppard staff was so close to crossing the same line Ren and Stimpy did when George Liquor was getting beat up with an oar (maybe not THAT close, but you know what I mean).

If I had to guess, Double D probably gave Gerta a bloody autobiograohy to acquaint her with life in Peach Creek, and probably vented a lot in his letters, and through this correspondance Gerta found an oppurtunity to prank Rolf and the Eds. But it DOES beg the question if Gerta was always Ed's penpal or if she managed to get ahold of Ed's penpal and get them in on the prank. What's more interesting is Rolf's childhood and life in the Old Country. Because for all his proclivity towards farming and animal husbandry, as Rolf routinely describes himself as 'the Son of a Shepherd' and very much lives up to that distinction, there's also this weird fixation with fish, squids, and The Great Sea Cucumber, implying a rich fishing heritage as well.

Rolf was by far one of the best characters, and this episode was amazing for him. Eddy's greed going international was utterly brilliant, too. As for the torture dungeon? Rolf is all about hard work, so that wouldn't be unreasonable for him to have built. Oh, and yes, I do get the Mr. Pickles reference, although the dungeon gave me more Temple of Doom vibes.

I imagine the principal put up that sign that was a reference to Orwell because well, they were probably fed up with all the numerous times the school gets destroyed thanks to the Eds and the Peach Creek kids' shenanigans and not to mention, they likely have to spend a huge amount of their budget of reconstruction pretty often.

Grew up in Florida and we would dig up our backyards to build forts and whatnot. It was a historica neighborhood so more than once we'd find buried wells or manhole covers we couldnt get open. The dungeon doesnt seem that big of a stretch compared to what kids would do when the show takes place.

As a person who dealt with US, Germany, Kuwait, and Iraq customs as an army UMO. US customs will allow you access to import and export skins and pelts of other animals. The pelt will be inspected to ensure that the animal isn’t endangered, if the animal is an endangered animal, US customs will investigate to see if it is custom for religion or other countries customs to allow the endangered animal to be killed, if the endangered animal is allowed to be killed by the other countries government, the pelt will be allowed through US customs. The pelt is then inspected for any form of foreign ticks, insects, or earth(such as dirt, rocks, or dust) to ensure that no invasive species of insects or bacteria are introduce to a country where they have no natural predators. All customs are huge on this, I wasn’t allowed to collect sand from Iraq and Kuwait to bring back home because of this. I was forced to hand over the sand I collected from Iraq in Kuwait so the Kuwait customs could burn the sand.
