I needed to make a new dust extraction collection hood for my 30year old Casadei TS900 planer/thicknesser. This machine didn't come with any ports for dust extraction so I decided to make this custom sturdy and very efficient dust hood from mdf. As you will see in the video it catches 99% of chips and dust.

Very good video, good to see the flow of chips, and good to see another old quality tool modified for modern use. As another user has suggested would be nice to have a workshop tour, you obviously have some very good quality older machines, can't beat them 👍

Nice job Tommy. Dust collection is my next workshop task and I'll be needing to make some extraction units for some of my kit as well so this is good inspiration. Great video, keep 'em coming.

great job. i like these kind of videos. very practical. i would be conserned that you are not letting any air to the box. all the air that the dust colecter pulls out has to be drawn up around the cutterblock. this will work with narrow timber but wont with wide boards. when i designed my one for my startrite planer i was getting clogs for this reason so i re designed it with a gap at the back . the planer will throw the chips up into the passing air as its extraced. . i bet you can hear the high ptched whistle of the air passing the spinning cutterblock

Hi Alan, there is airflow between the original shrud and the piece I brought down to it. I appreciate I didn't say this and it's not visible in video but there is a good 10mm gap and that draws air from the front of the box as this is not sealed.

Superb video - exactly what I was looking for - just the principles involved in shifting the dust, not a lengthy video explaining how to construct a 345x487x231mm box which wouldn't fit any other machine anyway! Loved the demo with the Perspex showing the chips being channelled into the hose too. Will check out your other videos, but with woodworking currently out of my 8'x6' garden shed, I am rather envious of your shop 👍

Hi tommy. Great video and keep them coming. Old machines are the best. I was given a 40 year old radial arm saw that was destined for the tip. I fully restored it ,with slight modifications (like dust extraction) and love it. Looking forward to the next one. Subscribe everyone!! Cheers from Australia

I like your idea. I have a similar problem with my old over under. It spews dust and shaving out of the front . Have you considered addressing that problem, with perhaps an extension to lift the dust and shavings with an additional suction pipe?
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I haven't looked at that issue very much as it's a very minimal amount of dust that escapes to the front of the machine. I think an additional section pipe at the front would not help too much it may actually increase the issue due to drawing air in the opposite direction to the other pipe and natural airflow of the spinning head.

What make is your machine? I have a Steton 16” u/o which looks very similar. It came with a metal dust collector fittings for use when jointing but nothing for thicknessing. I made a box similar to yours but a bit longer. My machine didn’t have the hinged metal dust diverted in front of the cutterhead and nothing over the outfeed roller. I used half a piece of 100mm pvc pipe as a diverter tween the cutterhead and indeed roller but it still sends about half the chips out the front. Any thoughts on a mod to fix this ?

My machine is a Casadei TS. It's difficult to give a reason for your issue without seeing the machine but there needs to be airflow through the machine not just the cutting head for the extraction to work effectively.
All you need to know about dust extraction!
