S1 - Ep 39 - Excited to travel through Elim and Baardskeerdersbos!

I didn’t expect us to find quite a few long stretches of gravel road to travel on to reach Elim and Baardskeerdersbos. But I am super excited and happy to report that we did! An added bonus was the short trip through Baardskeerdersbos also known as B-bos. We didn't plan it, but have always heard the name and thought it is the perfect time to drive through. I loved that road to Elim the white road fading into the distance beautiful, and the quaint small houses with thatched rooves great. B more modern yet interesting. Way to go!!!!

Wow, I never knew there's an Elim in SA as well! I just knew about the one the Israelites camped in during their 2nd stop after crossing the Red Sea.

Love Elim, gets its name from the Bible. You've missed quite a bit of the history of the town. Elim also have the oldest working water mill in South Africa and the only town with a monument celebrating the freedom of slaves. The town is also celebrating 200 years this year with a Heritage festival in August.

Lekker trip. By the way, the name of Baardskeerderbos (loseley translated to Beard Shaver Bush), comes from a tipe of spider found there. Die Baardskeerder: (Their colloquial Afrikaans name “Baardskeerder”, meaning “Beardshaver”, comes from a (probably) mistaken belief that they will cut pieces of hair or beard from sleeping humans - females of some species are known to use hair and fur to line their tunnels but this is probably collected rather than harvested.)

My question is: why do you think it's the missionaries that taught the indegenous people Skills and trade? I think that is misleading and not a historical fact.

We're not history buffs, so when we share info, it's either our own opinions or what we find online. I'm totally happy for anyone to correct us whenever they feel like it. It's not important to us, nor possible quite frankly, to know it all! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thank you for your response. Indeed, I do not expect you to know it all, I was just curious about the fact. I however respect your opinion. I have started watching from the 1st episode and must say that I really enjoy the content. It's a different side of SA that I was not aware of. So thank you for the videos.
