y'know you don't have to put an ellipses after every sentence right? it's pretty annoying. and knowing about lgbt+ history is important in discovering yourself and joining the fight to help problems like suicide, stds, and discrimination. lance also wrote the movie milk. he spent about a year researching and interviewing people so he could make the story as realistic as possible. without that movie, many young people wouldn't even know who harvey milk was. for lgbt+ people struggling with sexuality or gender identity it can be very important to know that you're not alone and you have other people trying to help you. we need to start remembering people like marsha p. johnson, bayard rustin, and harvey milk because they were so so important in paving the road for what we have today and what we need to fight for for tomorrow.

I’m also from America married my British husband when the U.K. was still Civil Partnerships. My husband and I met in a chat room and I’ve always been a love at first sight kind of person I’m also 19 yrs older then my husband and was raised in a religious , family called Jehovah Witness , which every one of my 8 older siblings rebelled, yet as they grow older most all of them joined which is known as a cult. I knew at 5 I liked boys. I was slapped across the room when I told my male parent that I wanted a kiss goodnight like my mother’s father who had 17 children , use to kiss all his grandchildren goodnight. I was told by my male parent it wasn’t right for my grandpa to do that, I was born in 1957. When it was even harder and I had no friends or family that I could talk about liking boys, gay met happy. I did meet a boy who was 13 and I was 12, who taught me a lot , but as we got older at 18 I came out to my mother she cried for a hour and a half saying that I would never have children, yet I baby sat all but two of my family,s kids even help raise my one brothers son because his wife hung herself. And raised my one sisters son for 14 yrs. My best friend had rejected me because I had told him I was in love with him since I was 12. I did move around a lot because of my male parent was a painter builder and made us all 6 boys to work at an early age of 4. When I met my best friend at 18 took me to my first gay bar in Minneapolis, MN I met my first lover I MN. Love at first sight we were only together for two years, but friends for about 30. When I met him in 1975 I was still at University and worker with my best friend dads Ice making company, his whole family kind of adopted me as a family member, Pa I called my friends dad and his brother and sister was and his sisters kids called me uncle Ed, in fact I had a great Aunt and a grandmother who also treated me better then my own family except my mother, I was the youngest of 9 I wasn’t spoken to that often to my brothers and sisters, when I went back to University to get my masters in Photography and Graphic design, I was also taking care of my mother she didn’t tell any of us she had a bad heart, I was called her or saw her everyday , I dropped my Photography business and thought my business partner would take care of it , but burnt it down for drinking money. Sorry I do have Adult Attention Deficient Disorder. So I do skip around my life, oh my parents got divorced after 46 yrs. what it comes down to Lance is I understand where your coming from I dated a young handsome man from San Antonio, in 1983 , but I had a bit of a drink problem only when I got depressed, Terry Jay Beaver was a Ice skater, who was with American Super Dream skaters and went on to Ice Capades in America and Japan he went by Terry Jay. Artist & skater. I had been in several vehicle accidents as passenger and driver, (sober). Terry’s mom didn’t like me, and wrote me in 1987 , telling me That Americans shouldn’t swin in the Oceans of Japan, she also told me Terry had been bitten by a sea creature got sick was taken back to TX. And was on a ventilating machine keeping him alive, she also told me they took him off the ventilating machine took a breath and died February 18, 1987, I couldn’t believe it, and to my surprise I received a home made personalised card from Terry with a photo of him sitting on a rock in the Ocean of Japan, it said on the back Love Terry Summer 1987. Al these years I’ve been wonder what or why he disappeared. I was sent a email address from a friend earlier this year which was from Ice Capades reunion I wrote them found someone who swears she was his skating partner from fall of 1987-1988 summer, The woman had also sent me photos of him and in one he was wearing a matching WWII flight jacket that matched the one I use to have. Why I wrote all this is I loved your talk the only thing I didn’t like is when you said LGBT , when I was an adult in Minneapolis , St. Paul it was always GLBT I guess I’m old school and the word queer to me is a hurtful word I was called in school and when the two guys stood up and used the term I flashed back to my old school days. I’ve been a fan of Tom’s since I moved here and now after your talk or story I am a fan of yours . We don’t have any gay friends here I do feel more free then in the States will We ever move back not till America catches up with the U.K. Thanks for all you have done. People say I should write a book as you can see I am not a good writer I jump around too much. I’ve been disabled since 28 or 30, my husband has since he was 15 a promising career as a runner in the Olympic stadium torn away while on a trip in Turkey while in a taxi that two adult friends and his uncle was with.He told the taxi driver he had bad springs and rolled over his uncle pushed Simon out of the car and everyone, but his uncle got out as the car blew up and he was killed. My husband Simon broke his back and was left there by his adult companions his mother who was afraid to fly had to go get him he had to have metal put in his back to hold the bones together, he can walk ,but he can’t feel his right foot. He also gets bad back pain. I’ve had 2 back surgery’s one in 1985, and one after a wall fell on me they said I would never walk again when I had my second back surgery in 1987, a year after my mom passed away from a heart attack in June 1986. Stayed with my one sister in MN till I got my own place and got hurt. I lived in Minnesota since 1979 till I moved back to my home state of Wisconsin, some time in 2000 something then I Moved to the U.K. in 2006. Then they changed civil partnership to gay marriage we were on of the first to get married and they made it so we have been married since 2006. Thanks again . Ed and Simon Carlson. ecarlondon@aol.com

Up til this I had no idea of how lucky Tom is. To share a life with this person I think is the ultimate level of happiness.

I came here just to check who is Tom Daley married with, but end up listening to the whole 1 hour session.. Lance have the charisma to draw and attract listeners to whatever he strongly belive in. I was the same as the guy 59:30 . I can see how touched Lance is and trying hard to control his emotion. Tom is so lucky to have Lance, they both are!

He's a humble guy and very sensible Whereas Tom Daley is too big headed and full of his own importance and very arrogant.. I don't think this relationship can last long and I'm sure that Lance will soon find another partner more suitable for himself.

Bravo! Intense story compellingly presented. I'd like to hear what he is saying now about our political climate. My gosh, he and Tom are a couple with both panache and substance. Grateful to have found this speech.

Every time i hear this speech, i'm so impressed and touched. To many people live in fear. And can lose so much, if they don't fit a particular label. Well spoken Lance, maybe you are somebody elsess Harvey Milk now.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Lance. I feel so honored to have heard part of your story, and then your thoughts of how we can work toward being more honest with ourselves and others, and achieve greater unity within our own diversity. All my best wishes for your continued success, both in your film work and in your recent marriage to Tom Dailey. You set a high example for us. Greg

Everything Lance said about speaking to those with different views than your own holds true of our best politicians. Ted Kennedy and John McCain were friends who worked together for the good of the WHOLE country, not just those from their own party. How sad and ironic that they both died from the same condition on the same day of the year. Maybe this is a sign that we need to return to the days of working together for the good of the whole. Beautiful words from Lance. I know his best work still lies ahead.

Thanks Lance! Brilliant speech, with so much life and passion. Inspirational and so glad you're still hear to tell your stories. It helps our cause and breaking down the barriers of "difference".. opening our minds to acceptance of others, regardless of sexual orientation, colour or religion. Thank you!

If he was acting in his presentation, I would give him an Oscar for his delivery. But it was real and where are the awards for such performances that can inspire and motivate people? So much passion, depth of emotion, awareness, intelligence? I wish we had leaders that had even half the quality of his talent for speaking with so much impact and effect. Thank you Lance. We need more leaders and philosophers like you ❤️

Thank you for this video. It has verified my lifelong belief how lucky I have been to have been born, raised, and lived my life in Canada. I have never experienced the things that Tom Daley talks about in his lecture. Additionally I thank the United Church of Canada for its non stop dedication to human rights for ALL. In Canada the United Church was at the forefront of rights for ALL including the LBGT community, sadly the community has forgotten that.
