You can turn full time Eye AF off, but I just leave it on. If it doesn't detect an eye, then AF works as normal, and you can always override a selected focus area by touching the screen and moving the flexi-point elsewhere.

Diffraction sets in at F11 onward. I would suspect that the new 35 will behave similarly? on my short list for a 85mm is a choice between a GM, Otus and batis. All seem to have pros and cons. I think should go with this lens as the next step from the Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8. I love the rendering of my EF 85mm 1.2L, it has some dramatic paint like look to it, but chromatic aberrations are often too visible, also would prefer my Sony system to be very compact. It seems that going for the Batis version won't bring much to the table. Was thinking to buy the Tamron 70-180mm 2.8 later, plus the 85mm 1.8 as more specialized portrait lens. The only "problem" is that the Sony 90mm 2.8 Macro OSS overlaps, making me wonder if should either use the 70-180mm macro capabilities, that manual focus, or choose the 90mm macro over the 85mm 1.8. I already have a Zeiss Makro Planar 2/100 ZF.2, but manual focusing on a Nikon DSLR proved complicated for example when tried to shoot snowflakes, so was thinking to get an AF macro lens. Perhaps MF will work well with my A7R II?

I was wondering, if you were to post two identical images on Instagram, one from the a7iii and one from the a7riii, would the image from the riii appear to retain more detail than the image from the 7iii? I’m aware that Instagram would compress both images to the same resolution, but would the riii image still look better since originally, that image came from a better sensor? @@DustinAbbottTWI Awesome, great feedback, much appreciated! Thoughts on Tamron's new mystery 4 lenses coming out? Wish I knew if they were coming out with an 85 as part of that lineup and how much. Bummer we have to wait a bit longer... That teaser on their site is soul crushing.

I wouldn't be surprised if an 85mm option is in there. My guess would be that at the least there is a 35mm and 50mm option in the mix along with something akin to a 70-200 zoom (probably with a slightly constricted range) in that lineup.

with all the due respect Mr. Abbott, i find this lens's sharpness bad, the 85mm F1.4 GM is a superior as well as the sigma 85mm F1.4 Art. soon i will sell the 1.8 and get one of the ones i mentioned above.

You must have a bad copy. My copy is freakishly sharp.
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
I agree with this take. I spent about five weeks with all of the 85 mm options and the Sony is just about as sharp as any of them
@evertuber5 жыл бұрын
@@rattoh i don't think there are different copies! i think some lenses are sharper than others.
@rattoh5 жыл бұрын
@@evertuber Copy variance is real. I shot and owned the Sigma 85 1.4 art, 85 GM and Samyang 85 1.4 at one time or another. Sharpness is not a weakness of the 85 1.8 FE. It's the boring rendering and CA from my experience. I only kept it for the size and weight for travel and video. www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/06/measuring-lens-variance/

That's funny... You must have gotten a bad copy or something. Sharpness is very good. Bokeh not as much....

Thinking about this lense but I'm worried it just doesn't have any character. Too neutral.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
That's a fair criticism. If you care about rendering, consider the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 instead. It's my choice.

Nobody will ever notice the characteristics of bokeh, it's only in the mind of the photographer. End clients or just people who look at your IG feeds will never ever care about something like this.

Yavor Kapitanov You couldn’t be more wrong.
@saintmovies77355 жыл бұрын
Yavor Kapitanov Of course not all clients Pixel Peep. But there is a global look to the images that is clearly evident.....and that clients do notice....especially the top $ clients. I have shot many weddings of clients that are also professional photographers....you think they don’t pixel peep?
@saintmovies77355 жыл бұрын
Yavor Kapitanov Agreed. I had the 85 F/1.8, and now own the GMaster....had them both for a while - and while my clients couldn’t pick out which was which, general feedback and comments, and the impact to my post workflow made it clear to me which lens to keep. And even though the GMaster is the sharper lens (thanks Dustin for correcting me), the rendering of the GMaster is much more graceful on people’s skin - right out of the camera. With the other lens, i had to almost always apply some level of softening in post
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
While I agree that bokeh is subjective, I definitely disagree with the comment that people don’t notice the difference. They may not be able to tell why, that people appreciate photos that have beautiful rendering
@ramspencer54925 жыл бұрын
What?????? Bokeh is huge. Particularly at this kind of focal length. Everyone will notice to some degree or other.
@dannyli94248 ай бұрын
Bokeh this lens produces is really nothing to write home about, it's probably one of the worst 85mm out there in the market, the Samyang 85 1,4 for example is so much better, and not to mention the Sigma 85 1,4 DG DN, or even the " old " Sigma 85 F1.4 DG for the DSLR, of course there is also the big brother 85 1.4GM that makes this look even further behind. and yes, I do own this that's how I came up with my comments.

There are better options available now, though when this was released it was a very solid option at a good price.

I don't know. Where I live the official (not Hong-Kong imported) version with Sony warranty retails for 650€, about 720/730 USD. I consider that definitely overpriced.

@@DavidRFIT here in the states it is 598 or so 600. I own this lens and it is a great lens. But overpriced is subjective. I know that the new lenses for all mirrorless full frame manufacturers is high compared to dslr. Nikon, Canon and Panasonic all have expensive lenses out now and Sony's lenses are looking more reasonable by comparison. I think that the GM lenses are overpriced a bit. But this lens here is totally worth it in my opinion at 600. It is one of my favorites on Sonys list. That and the Tamron 28-75 2.8 for the price to performance it gives. But I am glad we have Samyang, Sigma, and Tamron around making cheaper alternatives for those of us looking for good enough. This 85 1.8 is crazy sharp though.
