Dude, I watch videos from such short distance when on my phone and you reaching out with your hand looked so 3D that I felt as if it was an inch away from my mouth. 😂😂😂 Alright, on to the rest of the video! Edit: Full metal lenses are great until you start shooting in winter, so that's not a big advantage to me. What annoys me is the trend of manufacturers omitting the AF/MF switch. With that said, Sony's bokeh and fringing issues are totally unacceptable and with the Viltrox being the only 85mm that's actually budget-friendly, I'd buy that and suck up the lack of said switch instead of paying almost double for the Sony and having to deal with bad bokeh and fringing. That said, I'm probably buying the Tokina when the time to get an 85mm prime comes.

@TomCalton3 жыл бұрын
I don't have the exact details as to how similar these lenses are. All I know is that Tokina and Viltrox have some kind of deal where Viltrox are developing the lenses and then Tokina are buying/licensing the blueprints, tweaking them and then rebranding them as their own. They're definitely doing something to the innards as the Tokina 85mm, for example, is noticeably sharper than the Viltrox.

Very nice review, BUT I’m surprised to hear you say that the Sony’s case is made of plastic. My brother’s has been dropped a few times and has beautiful metal shining through at the unambiguous indentations. ;) Definitely all metal there. I haven’t had a chance to drop the Viltrox on a rock, but I did exactly that (by accident, mind you) with the Sony and it still worked just fine afterwards. So in terms of build quality, I’d say it’s built like a tank confirmed.

The mark II currently sells for the same price as its Mark I counterpart but features an upgraded lens hood, faster autofocus, and noticeably lighter construction. Hey man, thanks for the video! Exactly what I was looking for! btw... When I opened your video I though you're another 100k+ youtuber but when I saw you have just over 1k subs, my mind was blown! You have high quality content, nice video quality, good humour and I enjoyed looking at you and listening to you. So I just subscribed and I'm gonna sit here and I'll wait until you blow up! Good job, mate! btw again... Have you ever tried Samyang 85mm f/1.4? I know it's really good for stills but not that good with video AF. But someone told me the video AF got better after firmware update. Do you have any info about it? Because if the Samyang got better with video AF, I'm taking it. If not, I'll take the Viltrox. Thanks, man! Edit: I just saw your 85mm comparison video, I'll probably take the Samyang! :))

Thank you so much for your comment - really appreciate the kind feedback. We only started the channel in April of this year, so we're relatively new and learning all the time. Fingers crossed we can keep up the momentum though. Thanks for the sub - welcome aboard! 🤘

Thanks for this one, I have been debating between the 85mm 1.4 Sony and the 85mm 1.8 Sony, but the price tags on both of those are very high and had never even heard of VILTROX until your video! Thank you!

I'm getting the sony A7Iv for my first camera. I don't want to spend more on a lens because obviously the camera alone is expensive. I've been looking at a lot of reviews on a budget lens and the viltrox is win win. This video just confirmed it clearly! Thank you so much
@GT1211-j3j Жыл бұрын
TBH if you are getting a full frame camera without have good lens, that would be a great waste. If your budget is around a brand new a7iv, you can buy an entry level aps-c canon r10 or nikon ZFC and a set of used aps-c lens with different focal length. Lens are far more important than the camera itself. If you only buy one or two viltrox prime lens with an a7iv, there will be a lot of situation that you cant even take a better photo than a iphone 14 pro. Think twice bro.
@xyz46xyz Жыл бұрын
@@GT1211-j3j any 85mm F1.8 would take miles better photo than any current or future iphone, any day or night... period.

how about the skin tone, you told us everything but the skin tone, personally, I prefer the sony skin tone over the viltrox.
@TomCalton4 жыл бұрын
Being totally honest, I feel that analysing the skin tones for both lenses is a little irrelevant. It's something that can easily be changed during post-production. The minute you add a colour grade or filter to an image, it alters all of that anyway. And I can't say I've ever taken a photo and not tweaked the colours in PS or LR afterwards. That said, if a lens gives the images a super obvious colour tint then I will always make a mention of it. Appreciate your feedback though!
@RWAquariumPages2 жыл бұрын
great review. I've used the viltrox and love it a lot and it feels great. I did notice in your images the viltrox seemed more yellow and the sony lens seemed to have a more magenta cast? to it, did you notice that or were the 2 images post processed differently?
@xyz46xyz Жыл бұрын
I am colour blind, so dont know... but sony seem to have more detail and viltrox more washed out..

Hello Tom, I just suscribed; I just loved this video and the quality of it. I was just wondering if there would be any issue about the auto focus with a Sony A7II due to compatibility. If anyone has the answer, I would be glad to have it. Bell activated mate, definitely going to check all your videos. See ya

Thanks for the sub! I haven't tested this lens on the A7II so I couldn't say for sure - hopefully someone else will see your comment and have the answer for you.
@danielgallego24853 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris ! I know this was a while ago but if you’re still undecided, I picked the lens up for my a7II about a week ago. Haven’t gotten much of a chance to shoot with it, but around the house in low light it gets really nice shots. There’s a video here on KZbin of a girl in India I believe doing street photography with the same gear. Very nice shots. Not the fastest AF for sure but it’s actually faster than my Sigma 35mm 1.4. Hope this helps !
@PosranaRegistrace3 жыл бұрын
I have this one on the first A7 and the AF is fine as long as you have enough light, in darker conditions it gets less responsive, but A7 is not very good in that with other lenses anyway. Works quite nicely (surprisingly) in tracking as well. Should be more or less the same on A7 II, probably better.

Viltrox nya masih bagus sampe sekarang bg? Atau ada nemu masalah setelah beberapa lama pemakaian?
@clementcle1304 ай бұрын
From the sample photo of the bokeh balls near the lady's head, I otherwise think that Sony is better as the two white balls look wired as if it is a scene from a terror movie whereas the bokeh in the Sony photo looks natural. For sharpness, Viltrox is on the whole better than Sony, but portrait lens of 85mm may not need to be very sharp to expose the imperfect details of the model. The Sony lens is softer and more forgiving to the model and the look and color science of the sample Sony photos also appear more artistic (better for some viewers). Anyway, if the model is in her/his perfect state, then a very sharp lens will be very suitable. Photographers of wedding ceremony should take note of that in my opinion though I am not a photographer at all. Last week I just took some sharp photos during a family gathering and after looking at the photos I took, my relatives asked me not to take any more but only use their phone camera with auto editing app. lol!

just bought this for my sony a7III, does anyone have manual focusing issues? and also when shooting with a timer, it tends to render my camera dead, and i have to turn it off and back on again to get the same results. i am on the latest firmware for my camera and lens. anyone know the problem?
