I have a DJI Mavic Pro Platinum and I like it very much. However I have been interested in the Autel EVO as well. Your range test was very impressive and you had me on the edge of my chair to see if you were going to make it all the way back to your home base. The 3.5 miles out was quite impressive and even though it looked like the EVO would not make it you took over and got it back to the home launch pad safely. I enjoyed your Video very much, Great Job!

The fact that you were still getting a high frame-rate live video feed from 3.5 miles way just blows my mind. I've only ever owned two drones. One is one of those palm-sized micro toys with brushed motors, and the other is a cheap Walmart drone with a 720p camera on it also with brushed motors. I would dream of having something like this someday.

Dustin, I received my Autel EVO Rugged Bundle the other day, and was inspired by your range test! Naturally, I had to do my own range test, and got 3.2 miles out! It wasn’t quite as long as your flight, but I had to fly over some transmission lines, and lost video and RC connection. It did an automatic RTH, and landed within millimeters!!

Weird... miscalculated like my spark did before. I had a real butt clencher once with the spark over open ocean water (approaching storm so was some minor winds but I was flying into them) anyway I push it out to 2.6miles (furthest I gotten it ever) and I only just realized my battery was 43% when it started RTH routine.. so I figured it’s using the wind into its calculation and I’ll just ride the wind back... just my luck, the wind changed direction and became a cross wind meaning I couldn’t ride the wind back so I did full still up for climbing up and half stick forward and climbed up to 300 feet up lifted off climb stick and full stick forward figured I’ll ride the force landing back home... and I’m glad I did because last mile was in forced landing and limiting my speed forward to like 6mp... and got it back to me 30 second after 0%, so it was fighting the urge to die... My Mavic Pro has never let me down with battery calculations... sometimes it’s a bit too conservative and lands back around 30% when I’m long distance flying which is okay.. rather 30% than barely being alive like my spark. I pushed my mavic Pro our in similar conditions over open water, and it didn’t miscalculate it, but then again I don’t know the wind conditions 275 feet up.. but I do know they shifted on return to home and I wasn’t riding the wind back, felt like I was fighting it but I got back with 19% and estimated 6 minutes remaining, so it figure dit out.

Does pointing the antennas down work for the mavic too? It sure seems like it would be better to get the antenna away from the tablet a little bit. Great job on the Evo tests man. I'll be buying one based on what I've seen from your work. Absolutely fantastic job Autel has done to beat dji with a mavic pro/P4p competitor. Dji has blamed me my sd cards, calibrations, devices, flight areas and anything else they can think of to blame for their latest glitchy go4 update issues. Nation wide people are having video feed issues since last update yet they refuse to admit it. On all 5 occassions I've ever needed to call tech support they've blamed me when on all 5 occasions it was a firmware or software problem. Tens of thousands of people report the same exact problem and they still will not simply admit the truth. I love dji drones but I'm tired of the update issues, the geo fencing crap and the horrible customer service. I highly recommend that people do not buy a dji drone until they improve and actually value the fact that they must EARN OUR BUSINESS TO CONTINUE BEING THE TOP DOG IN THIS INDUSTRY. They need our money to exist.........THEY BETTER LEARN THAT REAL FAST!!

I ordered the Rugged Bundle also, can't wait !!! Wouldn't the ultimate distance test be over water like at the beach? Stay close to where the water meets the sand? I would like to see or even attempt myself an ultimate range test having someone in a vehicle stay with the drone, following it so when you're forced to land someone's there to retrieve it. Distance and return is actually more of a battery test in my opinion. The true range test would be distance to connection loss, yes?

Very nice video and nice drone. As a coincidence, I did a range test on my Platinum today, and got 5.5 km (3.4 miles). You beat me by a few feet, but I did get back with nearly 20% battery and also kept perfect signal throughout the flight. I didn’t think to turn off any sensors or anything and recorded the whole flight at 4K. I did it in Sport mode at 60 km/h out, against a breeze, and 65 km/h on the way back, with the breeze. The drone wanted to return home at about 4.5 km out. I gotta say, that seems to be the only flaw with Autel.... that’s a very dangerous Return To Home time! If you had encountered anything in the line of a breeze blowing you back or less of a breeze blowing you along, you’d have been hoofing it to get your Evo. I think they should change those perimeters. Otherwise a very good drone and a nice flight! Thanks for sharing.

I'm noticing that once you turned off all those sensors the speed increased by 5 mph on average. The drone seems to fly faster with those off, which would make sense as to why the battery life decreased. The power used to operate those minor power consuming sensors is now being used, along with additional power, to allow the faster speed the drone is now capable of due to it not having to be on its toes and staying at a slower speed that ensures it can react while looking for an obstacle.
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын

I was just thinking, it WOULD'VE made it back all the way to homepoint but you're battery was probably set to "Critical Land" at 10% battery. So next time you do a distance test first change the battery setting for "Critical Land" to 5% if it lets you. Also, keep on eye the Battery Voltages for each cell. There shouldn't be a difference of .05 between each cell. It's in the settings. But being a new battery probably not something to worry about. Usually get bad cells and voltage drops from older batteries. But i would check it just to be on the safe side. I do with mine after i take off just to be sure it's on the level.

In a pinch , turning off recording in addition to the steps you already took will probably get a little more range on return trip. Haven't tried it yet , but sport mode may or may not get more range when needed. How many flights can you get on a controller before it needs to be charged. I find that my P4 controller lasts for a good dozen flights , though I usually don't push it for safety.

Yes that might help a bit. Looks like the controller was 88% here on landing from full charge so about 9-10 flights I'd assume

But I do have to point out that as you flew over wide open land with no one or nothing in sight for miles, you mentioned a few times that it was not a rural setting, lol. If the flight times were anywhere near what they advertise I would definitely purchase an Evo.

That was impressive range. Seems like DJI has some competition in the drone industry. Great video thanks for sharing 👍

After watching this video I have a Mavic two and I’m noticing that you turn off sensors and do a bunch of different things I’m assuming that helps with the signal transmission. If you could help me understand a little bit better for a longer range I would greatly appreciate it. As always your videos are inspiring and extremely helpful.

I find myself wanting One More Type of Range Test. The One Way Max Range Test For Control and for Pictures. This requires secure landing spots for retreval, and maybe a partner. But Leap Froging is a viable way to use a drone, IF you know its limits.
