My EVO just arrived as your video concluded! The EVO looks fantastic and will be an improvement over my XSP. I'm sure they'll improve the rear obstacle avoidance in future FW updates. I can't believe all the DJI shills in here knocking the EVO. It flew great and the active tracking worked super! Seems only the orbit mode was a bit jerky and that'll be easy enough to smooth out in future updates. I'm not sure how soon I'll review mine. There's so much to cover. Thanks for this thorough video!

Three years later, but still valuable today. (Autel recently had some refurbished Evo 1s for sale. I'm in my mid-70s on a fixed income, and I have to buy what I can afford, not what's newest). I do always have to do a mental adjustment on some things. Here in the Mojave Desert, 5 - 15 mph isn't a windy day, it's the kind of calm day we look forward to when we get a break from the constant 30+ mph winds we live with.

From what I understand the avoidance sensor has a problem with vertical and small objects. Ie: It will still run into post and wires because there's not enough signal to bounce off of. I'ts good at avoiding walls, vehicles, flat surfaces or smashing into cliffs and if you try going faster on sport mode that shuts avoidance off .

Hey Dustin great videos!!! Rear sensors are working and detecting you from more 10ft away as you can see from the green, then orange, then red lower radar display. It is not stopping by design, it is set to only warn you. I will be contacting Autel and ask them to switch it "avoid" the rear collision or at least give us the option to select "avoid" or "warn". All other sensor directions are designed to actually avoid the collision by making the drone stop.

I actually liked the rear avoidance NOT stopping but just warning. I launched from my front porch to fly around the yard. The front OA prevented me from hitting the trees, fence and house but when it came time to land, it wouldn't get any closet than about 6 feet from the porch.and I didn't want to land in the dirt on my first flight. So I just turned around and backed onto the porch and landed at my feet. So, I hope that when they update and implement the rear "avoidance" function, I can turn it off easily from the Tx or phone (like one of the programmable buttons).
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
makes sense in that situation but you can manually turn off and on if you want in settings. I'd rather it work in all modes if possible and just turn of manually if needed.

Another Plus for this one over the Mavic is that you don't get the annoying pop up NFZ nag warnings .. that's a big plus I think. Video was excellent, even in those winds. Looking forward to see a range test and a RTH test ... Mahalo!

Bill Somrak NFZ’s are there for a reason. So tired of hearing people complain about it. It’s actually a great thing that DJI has done with the NFZ no arming software. Keeps dimwits from doing something stupid
@billsomrak6 жыл бұрын
You can't outlaw 'dimwits' and 'stupid people' .. they existed in the past, they exist today, and they (like cockroaches) will be around in the future. I don't need any "Big Brother" Chinese Data Mining company telling me where to fly, and where not to fly. Half of their "Warnings" are invalid. I constantly get 'Warnings' about uncontrolled airports which haven't seen a take-off or landing in decades. To each his/her own. YMMV
@krisiluttinen5 жыл бұрын
Bill Somrak Thank you! Was able to fly at my place 2 years ago, now I cant. That is total bullshit. Will get the EVO. Having a MfG control the product you buy, will never be yours. You are basically renting the quad. Eventually you wont be able to fly anywhere as now even stupid parks are getting on the list. Some ahole does not want you flying will complain and have them add more land under NFZ. Of course dont fly by an airport but now its like everywhere.

Great review Dustin, I think you might be the most neutral drone reviewer, I think you mentioned Mavic less than anyone else and basically sang the praises and negatives of the EVO on it's own right, though you did mention it a bit. I feel a review should just be based on the item being reviewed and the comparisons left for actual comparison tests. Looking forward to your future reviews, specially would like to see how the video holds at a distance, not necessarily pushing it for miles but lets say how steady the image is at a mile or two. Good job, thank you.

Thanks for doing such a great job on this review of a very important new drone. Since it's strongly compete's with the Mavic Pro and probably has a better camera. I just hope it doesn't look like last year's drone when the new Mavic 2 arrives this fall.

I got The Mavic Pro and it's doing well, except for some odd gimbal issues and sometimes recalibrating mid air. And some tilt. I kinda want to get this one just to see what others offer. The only thing it lacks that Mavic Pro has is the 3D Mapping Capabilities
@darrylw90176 жыл бұрын
Well not really the only thing it lacks.. IT also lacks all 3rd party support. That is there are many companies that have written software that can be used to accomplish just about everything under the sun for the Mavic. The EVO lacks all of that support. The upside of the EVO is the price and the absence of GEO - NFZ. IMO the Mavic is more refined than the EVO but the EVO is not far behind and can be flown anywhere you are dumb enough to fly.

@karthurjr6 жыл бұрын
Dustin, is there a yaw speed adjust? The X-Star Premium has this adjustment. Also, are you able to turn on and off the avoidance? Does the higher speed rate negate the avoidance? The reason for these ?s is because on first flights many times unfamiliarity can cause missed features. Not to knock you or the EVO, but consider?
@DustinDunnill6 жыл бұрын
I did not see any adjustment for yaw speed. Yes you can turn off obstacle avoidance. I think this was a pretty realistic review of how it actually performed in these conditions out of the box. All I did was turn off beginner mode which apparently is the only mode rear OA is active in thus far.

Excellent video Dustin. Regarding the disparity between the performance of the front and rear sensors, I can't help but wonder if the Evo is indeed functioning as intended. The front sensors activated AND halted the aircraft, whereas the rear sensors activated (thus gave warning) but did not impede motion. The manual is somewhat vague in this area as it specifically describes front sensor operation and execution separate from the rear sensor. Is this intentional?

Given the wind I was quite impressed with everything but the rear sensors _I think it is worth looking at that section with the video slowed down_... Mavic Pro = 5 Autel Evo = 4 (1) Evo not as smooth taking videos in orbit mode. 2) and continues to adjust lighting in auto mode unless I put it manual mode.

Had to drop my Evo because it keeps losing its signal like that! I can't tell you how frustrating that is!

Do a noise difference between it and the Parrot Anafi.

Wow 1000$ I think if they brought the price down to 600$ they would sell loads and sort the issue on rear avoidance that would do great.

The rear avoidance works as it's supposed to. It stops in novice mode. In regular mode it only gives warning tones thinking you are flying in tighter spaces on purpose.

Makes sense 👍. I would like to see the option for both though.

I wish DJI would put their phone bracket on the top too. And I like that color 🤓 I was intrigued bu this one.. nice camera, nice controller, pretty capable, but I’m a sucker for the new “boomerang” feature on the Mavic Air 😜

I live in Alabama want range 2 to 4 miles wise fly out beginning wise and have note 20 and iPad but customer support would this be wise buy or DJI be better? Like pro drones flyers advice 2k to 2.5 spending limits.

Buy a Dji drone …like the mini 2 or mavic air 2 ..you can get 2 to 4 miles easy …autel builds good drones but they are expensive and they are just a bit less then Dji …

Can this track non-ground based objects? e.g. can it automatically follow another drone or rc plane?

Nice video why use a phone when the screen is built into the controller?
@DustinDunnill5 жыл бұрын
Limited functions with only controller screen unfortunately.

Try a slow yaw. Is it jerky like the Xstar?

Thanks for this! I know I'm not the only one hungry for info on this drone. I had thought that I need to get a P4P to do commercial applications like roof inspections, tower inspections, etc. Now I'm not so sure, this seems like a great product. Can you please do a test near a roof or something else that would simulate a commercial inspection, to see how stable it is when close to a structure? Also, orbit is terrible. LOL

If you want a pro application the P4p is the way to go.
@darrylw90176 жыл бұрын
ill qualify my comment. If you want the bottom end of the pro class .. go P4p
