The Buick 215 V8 had become the "Big Block" of the entire British Automotive Industry (aka British Leyland) for second half of the 20th century. Whenever a British carmaker needed extra power/torque for any vehicle or for the top of the line of whatever vehicle they without fail reached for the Buick V8. For an entire generation of British gearheads the 3.5 liter Rover V8 was considered the performance engine and received not only much love and devotion but also development ending in 2006 as a 5 liter EFI V8.

The Buick 215 aluminum engine did have problems with Q.C. HOWEVER, in 1964, Buick went with a cast iron block and used the aluminum heads, increased bore and stroke to yield 300 c.i.d. {4.9 litres}. Changing to iron heads in 1965. The design rights and patents were then sold to British Leyland in 1968 The odd-fire 225 v6 version was sold to AMC for use in the venerable Jeep cj series untill 1973. This was the engine GM bought back in 1975 for use in its compact Vega/Astre and Monza varients.

Those were notorious for blown head gaskets and leaky valve stem seals in the earlier models. Looked like a wonderful engine on paper. The 3.3-3.8 Chrysler which supplemented and eventually replaced it looked like a retarded throwback on paper but is an extremely durable and quite efficient engine. Probably the worst looking design on paper, but best in operation was the Chrysler slant 6. When I first saw pictures and drawings on the 1960 Falcon, Corvair and Valiant I immediately identified the slant 6 as being a retarded cast off design from a 1920s railroad locomotive. Fooled me.

The buick 215 that the rover v8 was based off of was built with a cast iron block that was notorious for rear main seal leakage. Buick sold the rights to the motor design to land rover and they created a "relative" equivalent to the 215 called the rover v8 that was forged out of aluminum. The rover v8 supplemented cylinder sleeves that were never pinned down from the factory which resulted in them braking loose as they got hotter and causing the notorious "liner slippage" that all rover v8 owners despise. Due to the horribly designed cooling system lr designed for the discovery, they're very notorious for blowing headgaskets along with the liners slipping. The 03s (4.6l v8) were predominantly the worst year of them all due to land rovers misaligned oil pump recall that caused many disco owners grief. I recently finished rebuilding my 03 discos 4.6l with a kent h180 cam, coil pack relocation kit, uprated valve springs, upgraded tappets and freshly milled heads. Believe it or not the electrical system in the discoverys arent as bad as you may think they are.

Haven't watched the video but I know you're talking koenigsegg, they had later models that produces way more with different head castings But also the ford 4.6 really is just a terrible engine naturally aspirated. 500 NA is a max effort build on a 4v 4.6 if you're not stroking/boring. Realistically to run on pump gas with boost your pre boost engine may make 435ish horsepower at most due to low compression. Put it this way, they're adding over 200 horsepower to the 03 cobra engine essentially while running about the same boost number. Pretty impressive.

Arcitecture is a stretch in general. Like as u mentioned on the modular, the have different heads. The 4v modular was used only-in the lincoln mark 8, mustang(cobra), lincoln aviator and the Mercury Marauder so these cars really share that engine. Also if ur where going purely on architecture on the 215 v8 u could through in all v6s Derived from the 215, the 3.8 (turbo/supercharged and non turbo/supercharged) the 3.0 buick v6s and even the Jetfire v8(the first production turbo v8). Another neat adition would have been the shelby series 2 which had a version of the northstar built for indy racing. The Buick 215 design was sold to Rover, then the design rights were bought back. Only, GM turned it into an iron block V6 engine. This eventually via refinement became the 3800 V6. Some later AMC Gremlins and Spirits actually used a Porsche inline four from the original 924.....

I know where you are going with this already and just NO. For the CC8 and CC8S there was still a bit of commonality in stuff like main-caps, thrust washers, head gasket, head bolt pattern, oil pump, and main seals, but there are basically no Ford parts in it. It’s a lot of digging to get to get the whole story but at that time, (CC8S): The block and heads are based on the Ford Modular but designed by Koenigsegg and custom, along with the cams, and timing set. The rest of the parts are mostly off the shelf, aftermarket parts, forged crank, rods, pistons, valves, etc. By that measure it’s like saying a LO2 350 in a 1989 Chevy truck is the same engine as a LQ9 in 2009 Chevy truck, just because they both have 4.400” bore centers and the pistons will fit in either hole. After Koenigsegg produced all 6 of those cars, yes 6, they went to a 100% in house design because most of the few parts they had left in the engine that were actually Ford, weren’t up to the task, or at least Christian’s standards.

I can answer that. So, due to strict emissions, they had to use a different thermostat. This thermostat literally didn't work as it should and literally cooked the engine from the inside. A common fix is to use the TD5 thermostat that is found on the V8s in the other parts of the world to prevent damage to the engine. You can thank the epa for that silly thermostat rule.

The USA is a massive country with hugely varying climates, and long distances with mountain ranges to climb. We drive up mountain passes in Africa style heat at 80MPH, expecting no breakdowns. The old Buick V8 proved too feeble to withstand this usage. Britain is tiny, no real mountains, and cool climate!! Also, our idea of reliability is a bit different, our (American) cars are mostly rubbish, but the powertrains are reliable under careless use and poor maintenance.
@Hairybarryy

@@timmcooper294 Not really, I thought this also , But a lot of Brtis will take their cars through the channel tunnel to other parts of Europe where the climate is similar to that of US. Not to mention these cars are in several even harsh places around the world, Africa and Australia are some examples. Also the UK has MOTD where you have to not only get it smogged, your car has to be physically ok on the outside. You have no choice but to maintain it until it rusts itself to death. On top of that in the States they over charge you on repairs and try to tell you its a luxury car. Its one of the easiest cars to work on but yet they charge an arm and a leg The 215 isn't as fragile as people think its just a bit underpowered. Im more of the fan of the 300TDI and TD5.

@@Hairybarryy "Not really" HaHa! Been into Land Rovers since the 1980's, and personally watched the history play out here in the states, been to Europe, too.......Tiny place compared to the states. Soooo many of these cars went to the crusher here on the west coast with dead engines but otherwise totally solid. These engines die out west in the heat !! Say all you want, but you can't change history........ It was such a shame to see otherwise good vehicles scrapped in shocking numbers due to the over-rated feeble weakling of an engine.... I can never forgive it for that !! I love old Land Rovers, but there are fundamental, factual reasons why many engines that did well in Britain were notoriously unreliable here in the big wide open spaces. We ask way more of our engines here, and we take less care of them. Long term stamina and the ability to withstand lack of maintenance is the key to survival here. This engine killed so many good Land Rovers / Range Rovers..... What a shame...
@Hairybarryy
@Hairybarryy Жыл бұрын
@@timmcooper294 I mean engines just dont die from heat. There is scientific reasoning behind overheating engines on an engineering standpoint. Heat needs to be circulated away from the source properly. If it dosent this will cause damage. The thermostat is what caused a lot of these engines to fail. When the thermostat failed it will close. To say that these engines just failed from overheating shows you have no idea what you are talking about. If people actually did their research these cars would have lived a lot longer. all it needed was a thermostat and a accurate temperature gauge. I have a discovery 1 with 224,000 miles on the ODO. I live in a dry and hot climate of califonia near mountains. I beat the heck out this car going up and down trails every weekend. The engine while weak is stout and it doesn't overheat. Bottom line is these cars fail due to stupidity and carelessness
