I'm 66 years old. I've owned trucks my entire life. I've had Chevy's , Ford's and a Toyota. My 2007 Ford F350 5.4L Super Duty utility truck is hands-down the best truck I have ever owned. I bought it new off the lot in 2006 for $38,000. It now has 184,600. The only thing I do different than what the manual says is I put Marvel Mystery oil in the oil and gas. I drive it hauling thousands of pounds of lumber, materials and equipment to Flagstaff from The Bay area a couple of times a year. It has never failed me or stranded me in the middle of no where. Once you replace the stupid 2-piece spark plugs this engine is bomb-proof. The Marvel is from an Aviator Hero of mine who had an amazing story with his aircraft engines. I'll leave it at that. If you use it in your engines they will last forever.

I would venture to guess the public utility I work for has about 1500 Super Duty cab and cassis across the fleet with various assortments of builds. Some are manlifts, others are super structures, while others are simple companion trucks with bin boxes. The garage I am assigned to maintains about 30 different Super Duty configurations. Aside from the diesel engines you discussed in other videos, the trucks have held up really well. Although none of the gas engines have ever impressed our drivers. There aren't many gas engines in the fleet, but the few we have just don't hold a candle to the diesel equipped trucks. One of the coolest things Ford ever did was install upfitter switches in their trucks to make adding accessories much cleaner. We no longer have to find a place to cut holes in the instrument panel to add switches and run wiring; the switches and wiring are aready there. I believe three of the switches are 15 amp while the other two are 20 amp. It makes for a clean install of PTOs, beacons, and other things a user might need. Of all the things I could complain about, Ford made cabin filter replacement a complete pain in the a$$ on their trucks. Since the fleet I am assigned to is in the desert, cabin filters last about a month before needing replacement. With 30 of those in our local fleet it seems I am changing a filter at least once a day. Of course I could just leave out the filter, but the users really enjoy clean air in the cab.

I had a 7.3 Powerstroke dually, and loved it. Wish I had been smart enough to keep it. If buying a used diesel it's better to get a 99 to early 03 model, or jump all the way to the 6.7 engine in 13. I would like to pick a hole in the script. When Ford replaced the 5.4 with the 6.2, it was just the 5.4 that was replaced. The 6.8 remained all the way until 2020. It was a lesser used option, but it did remain. And the 6.2 is still an option today. The 7.3 replaced the 6.8 as an option, and the 6.8 is no longer used anywhere in Ford's current lineup.

What about the f-superduty in the early 90s?
@robotrash4111 ай бұрын
To understand more fully you have to go back a lot further than 1998. Try 1958 when the Super Duty engine line was introduced. 1960 was the first Ford truck with the “Super Duty” name on the hood.
@mattorman56402 жыл бұрын
I love the video but you could get a factory 4 wheel drive dually from the late 80s until 97 as a cab and chassis truck (sold with no bed) I know for a fact because I own a 93 f350 5 speed 4x4 dually 7.3.

I wish ford went back to using the same body style on the 1/2 ton with the 3/4 & 1ton. This way u get the power of a 3/4 with the size of a 1/2 ton truck. In the 1990s you could have a 150 EXTCab long bed with either a 150 or 250 gas or diesel option. Or if u wanted something more u could get a CCLB or w a dually or go to a short cab long bed basically a 150 size but with a 250-350. And yes they did make the standard cab in a 250. They’re rare, but they are out there.
@kdrapertrucker2 жыл бұрын
Since 2017 they have used the same cab as the F150.

Not even a mention of Ford's history with the super duty name in heavy trucks that dates back to the fifties.

Today we think of a 4WD dully as normal. in reality Ford was right with the OBS, as it's a pointless configuration for a professional use truck. The 4WD dully is a toy truck for running to the grocery store. a 2wd dully is perfect for towing and a single wheel 4WD is better suited to farm/construction/plow use off road/on snow
@ryanelliott25282 жыл бұрын
4WD Dully is mandatory for firefighting operations with type 6 engines and highly useful for ambulance packages.....we use them all the time. We used to have no end of trouble with the aftermarket conversions so this was a major and well received upgrade for us.
@johngaltline99332 жыл бұрын
@@ryanelliott2528 could you explain that? What does this configuration do for you better than one of the other options? The only benefit of a dully is added weight capacity on the rear axel, at the expense of traction as each tire has less weight on it.
@ryanelliott25282 жыл бұрын
@@johngaltline9933 A type 6 engine carries 500-800gal on the rear axle depending on tank configuration. These engines are operated on steep inaccessible terrain not reachable by larger engines. Some crew carriers (ambulance package) carry 6 additional personnel over the rear axle. In both instances we’ve driven past those with 2wd configurations. When you’re headed to the top of the mountain, every foot you can drive is one less that you have to hike. In real world tactical applications the 4wd dully wins.
@johngaltline99332 жыл бұрын
@@ryanelliott2528 So the use case is for cab ans chassis trucks , not pick ups. Got it. Sorry, I missed it in the first post. I can see it being useful to have the option... but also, it seems like any builder that can put on an ambulance or firetruck body ought to be able to swap an axle as well. I mean the only difference in the dully and standard axle OBS trucks is that the dully axle is about 4 inches longer. Im a little curious on the merits of actually taking an emergency vehicle in to a place where a 2wd gets stuck. It seems like you're asking to get it stuck... far enough along where nobody will be able to help get you out. I don't know, not being in the field, but I'd think you'd be better off with something like a good ATV to get to remote places quickly without getting stuck, and a standard axle 4x4 pickup with a good tow strap to pull out the dualies when they get stuck. All that said, lets put aside cab and chassis trucks, is there a use case for off the lot, fully loaded, 4x4 f350 dualies?
@austinyoung3280 Жыл бұрын
@@johngaltline9933I grew up around a lot of ranchers, when you got a full trailer of cattle or horses the 4x4 helps a lot out in a field. If you got 10-15-20 cows behind you, you want a dually, but you also need a 4x4

I own one, a 2000 Super Duty with the long frame, single cab, V-10, dualie, 5 speed manual and 4 wheel drive.... an F350. Folks come up to me at stops (usually at the fueling stations) to see if I am interested in selling all the time. One very uncommonly seen truck. I have a 13 foot steel flatbed on it and kitted with tool boxes, fuel tank, and a few underslung boxes, pintle hitch, and tie down hooks for versatility

Yes....but no. While you are correct regarding the current use of Super Duty, Ford originally used it on trucks in the 60s. I'm sure most people don't realize the name is from much earlier! At least this time they stay with the correct vehicle for the name, instead of using Mustang on an EV CUV or Lighting from a performance vehicle to an EV or Maverick.... well, you get the idea.

The modern Super Duty did not start with a different body style I have a 97 F Super Duty that has the OBS but a similar frame as the 99, it is 10 lug and straight front axle so not the old Heavy Duty but a true Super Duty that also included rear disk brakes. Also worth noting is they were all just called F Super Duty with no number however there were several GVRWs

The F-Superdutys back then had the 10 lug wheels, & I think a stiffer frame. The F-Superdutys in the 1990s were a tad bit rare, but not uncommon to find if you look at what’s out there rn. Just be aware that when u get an OBS don’t beat the crap out of it, cuz there’s a limited amount of em left for the rest of us guys that want to fix em up & keep em goin.
