I worked on the design team at the Cummins Small Engine Development Center (SEDC) in the early 80s. The thing to keep in mind is the 4 and 6 cyc engines were a joint venture between Cummins and Case Tractor. They split the production 50/50 out of the North Carolina engine plant - and - Case insisted on a heavy duty block and ease of repair-ability. Cummins wanted a lighter weight design for automotive applications. Once Cummins was able to create design outside the constraints of “make it work for tractors too” - the weight and optimization for auto was possible. Btw - noise was always a key consideration- for example- when you see the pulleys on the front of the engines with holes in them that’s not for weight savings - it’s to make them less like a speaker and more quiet. And composite and plastic valve covers were in the earliest designs. Good review thanks for creating the video.

The 5.0L Cummins diesel always intrigued me. It’s too bad it seems to have been doomed for failure. I’ve owned two Jeep Grand Cherokees with the Mercedes Benz V6 3.0L OM642 common rail diesel engines. It was a fantastic engine. Pre-DEF, made great power for the size, and after an ECU tune made even more power and was very efficient. It also help do away with the pesky swirl valve and EGR issues.

The inline 6 diesel is the king. Cummins B series, old Navistar DT466 and the Caterpillar 6's. I'll never own a V8 diesel and I have driven all of them plenty. I used to drive Ford & GM wreckers and they were good...but the inline 6's were better. Massive torque down low in the revs, smooth and also easier to work on.

Yup, although I made more power on my 6.7 powerstroke, the turbo started going out, so I’ sold it and bought a 96 Cummins 4x4 5 spd, soon to be 6spd. Perfect truck everything that can break costs less than 4k to replace(6.7 turbo) and I can do it in under a week. If the fuel system on the 6.7 power were to go bad, that’s 10k out of pocket, I’d only get another powerstroke if it’s brand new and under warranty/lease. Which many people do, everyone I know that drives a new 6.7 has it either leased or under an extended warranty. I figured I would chime in on this truck, I would also think its worth noting I`m a professional truck driver of 30 + years. I have a 2019 XD with 71,500 miles. I live rural so I average 20mpg in summer and 17-18 in the North Idaho winters. I do run a aftermarket fuel additive like Standayne or Diesel 911 for a lubrication of the fuel and a bit of extra fuel economy. I use Valvoline Premium Blue for oil with regular service. The truck is comfy, roomy, quiet, and for a diesel truck drives really nice. Very nice to hop into after a 10 hr day driving a class A truck. I always see people bitch about this truck not having enough torque, and being less capable then the other big 3 trucks. The truck is a heavy half meant to be between a half ton and 3/4 ton. If your gonna be pulling a skid steer on regular basis your gonna get a 3/4 ton truck or better. If gonna pull an RV or boat for summer fun the specs on this truck are perfect . My example of towing for XD is I have a 32ft travel trailer , loaded for bear with the family. As a test I decided to see what this truck could do going up 4th of July Pass in Idaho. From a dead stop, I got to 70 mph and still pulling halfway up the grade and still easily pulling before I backed out it. More then capable for my needs. Now the issues I`ve had. I would like to mention that every diesel I have ever driven has odd personality quirks that very from truck to truck. I`ve had two separate issues with the injector/fuel rail. First one had the fuel line vibrate off the injector(covered under Nissan warranty) that was Spring 22` Then Spring 23` had an injector go bad and not covered under Nissan warranty as its part of the emissions which Nissan only covers for 50k miles. Thankfully not trusting modern diesel def system I bought an extend warranty that covered the issue. I just dropped it off at the dealer yesterday as I have a catalytic going out , and Im guessing a transmission sensor going out(the temp gauge is missing the hash lines to measure temp) and Im getting low tire, ABS and traction control light stuck on in the cool morning and goes off in afternoon summer heat. (edit) I forgot to add for the bad injector I had a 30 day wait for the parts and service. So take this info as you will. I think the truck is nice, but I would strongly recommend anyone getting a good aftermarket warranty and stay up on servicing your truck or any diesel that you choose.

Personally for me, it usually normal maintenance. The dealer always has to find their diesel tech or bring him from a sister dealership. The only issue I've run across is the Sensor in the DEF tank is sensitive, if I let the truck run with a 1/2 full tank too long the sensor seems to get residue on it and will try to put the truck into limp mode. Usually a quick fill up from a DEF pump vs using the jugs fixes the issue and the error will go away within a day.

Got a 2019 xd pro 4x diesel in dark green. I’ve never seen another green one in person. Love the way it tows compared to a 1/2 ton. The fuel mileage is 1/2 ton gas range when it’s empty but put a load on it and that is where it shines. Its obvious that it needs another gear to get better empty fuel mileage on the freeway. I had a 2016 Nissan XD with this engine. I didn't have any major complaints with it. It was very quiet for a diesel and had good power and torque for a smaller engine. I towed my 27' holiday trailer with it. And it pulled it quite fine--a bit better than my previous Titan with the 5.6l gas engine. However I was disappointed that it didn't get any better mileage pulling the trailer than what I had with my gas engine. So for the little bit of extra torque and less HP than a gas engine, it never really blew me away. I like the idea of the 5/8th ton truck, but it is interesting that the XD never really took off. I saw at one point that Nissan was selling XDs in one month what Ford sold F150s in one day. So I guess the concept (and price) just never caught on. I watched the development of this project with great interest and could hardly wait til I got my hands on the new Titans--and now Nissan has totally stopped building full size pickups. Strange times.

GAWR is only 4900, so you're over the axle limits, too, considering the curb weight of an empty vehicle. If you tell me you're pulling 17k on a gooseneck and it feels great, I believe you, but 28k+... man, you need to make sure you've got good life insurance and liability, because that's dangerous af. I was able to take the online courses for it and learn a little bit. I wish we had the chance to see them in person in class. They are very weird for a Cummins. Typically V-engines from Cummins are built in 16cyl or larger for locomotives or marine applications. Cummins also never uses glow plugs on ANYTHING so when they made it with glowplugs we were all shocked lol. I think Nissan went about making the truck wrong in a way. They made it too much in between a 1500 and a 2500 like it was beefier than a 1500 but it wasn’t as strong as a 2500 and the price reflected it in a strange way too. I just bought one not too long ago. I bought it because I needed a new truck that I could afford. I’ve owned a couple of Duramaxes, and Powerstrokes in the past and was absolutely thrilled with the idea of getting a newer one than I’ve ever had before. However, in 2022’s used car bubble… I quickly realized if I truly wanted a normal 3/4 ton diesel, either my budget was going to double or it was going to be 15 years old with a quarter million miles. So instead of giving up or trying to stretch my budget, I actually lowered my budget slightly and got to thinking what it was I actually need a truck for? And after listing out, plowing my driveway, runs to the home center, pulling maybe 10,000lbs once a year or so. I realized I’d probably be just fine with a half ton for now. But I still wanted a diesel. I test drove a few eco diesel rams and while I absolutely loved the ride and interior of the rams. Their tow rating with the eco diesel is absolutely ABYSMAL at just 7,700lbs. I mean, my wife’s grand Cherokee is rated better than that… So I remembered that back in 2015 I had test driven one of the first Titan XD trucks available in my area and it being something I thought I could be happy with. So I started looking and found that they happened to be going for right around what I lowered my budget to. And that was with half the miles and anywhere from 2-6 years newer than what I was finding before I readjusted my search. So I found one with 100,000 miles and was a 2017. Compared to the 2012s I was finding with 175,000 miles in Chevy or ford. I decided to give it a shot.

Good video - I own and daily drive a 2018 Titan XD with the 5.0L. I bought it in 2021 with 19,100 miles, the previous owner took meticulous care of this truck, Car Fax documented thru the dealership. I got to meet him and his family, great guy too. I put it on a diet, delete and tuned with a few other mods and couldn't be more happy with my 5/8 ton truck. I come from a 5th Gen Ram 1500, 5.7L that was tuned (ECM swap/ Diablosport) and honestly hated towing my camper with it but not with the Titan XD. It pulls so much better than the gas truck did. I do wish Nissan had followed the electronics update curve, the interior is slightly outdated but I have plans for that also. No Android auto/ Apple Car play, back-up camera was awful and GPS/NAV was wonky in the 2018 year. The newer 2019 head unit will fit but re-pin (or harness) and a trip to the dealer will get CarPlay, Android Auto and a newer Google maps on the head unit for ~$500 or so.

While the baby duromax and eco diesel ram are very capable of hitting high 20mpg marks are 5.0 titan falls disappointing short in the high teens. @McarthurMotors2 жыл бұрын
Nissan stopped using the 5.0 because Cummins cancelled the contract. Emission changes and the need for more power was forcing Cummins to invest engineering money into a motor that wasn’t selling volume wise. 22,000 units a year isn’t enough to justify a further investment. The motor has zero turbo issues other then the regular 200k replacement. Issue is it’s a two stage and with the computer you are stuck ordering their $5000 turbo with no other replacement. The engine does have crankshaft issues with plenty breaking and the used market has sky rocketed due to availability so your stuck spending $15,000 plus for a used engine

I think the big problem is that it didn't compare favorably against their own gas engine. Particularly in the fuel economy department. A few tenths is huge in a commercial truck, but in a commuter that tows sometimes, it needed to be a little more significant. The gas engine tows about as well, gets about the same fuel mileage (even while towing) and doesn't require def or other $$ equipment. It needed to either tow a lot better or get much better economy and it did neither. Specially after they cranked up the 5.6 a little the next year.

I worked at Cummins and this engine was in the think tank long before 2009. The reason it didn't go into the Ram 1500s is because Fiat had their own diesel they wanted to use that they were convinced would be a better fit. @@Modine. I don't know anything about the new 5 liter. Not all diesel engines are direct injection. This is a big subject, but just about all small diesels used in pick ups are indirect injection, they have a pre combustion chamber. The diesel is not injected straight onto the piston, but into this chamber which is press fitted into the head, ie just about all Toyota's. A good example is the Cat 3206 engine. They are made in both forms, the indirect injection been the older design. What I was taught , is that an indirect injected engine is a bit quieter and can rev higher. But direct injected is cheaper to build supposedly more economical, and in my opinion not very much louder. Like my wife's car , Landrover Freelander has the Ford ,2 2 EcoBoost, direct injected. I have owned several trucks for various reasons including the 6.0 power stroke, and a Toyota Tundra 5.7. Currently I am daily driving the Nissan Titan, but also tow a 10k toy hauler and a boat. Compared to the Tundra there isn't a comparison, way better fuel economy and much lower RPM'S. Truck feels more stable hauling. But some complaints come to mind, engine turbo lag off the line, strange re-gen schedules, and the DEF gauge is worthless! The front suspension is weak, and towing a load over bumps can get sketchy! As far as power, it's defiantly not a rocket ship but does inspire confidence with the torque! So overall, this truck and engine fits exactly what I was looking for, daily driving and able to tow a big load without stepping up to the super duty class! Also it fits in my 2 car garage with the tailgate down when hauling dirt bikes!

I had a 2016 XD Platinum Reserve. I loved it at first. Then the problems started. First was the low fuel pressure warning coming on anytime the tank dropped below 1/4. Then the lift pump burned out and it was in the shop for almost a month because there is only one Nissan diesel tech in my area. Then I got a code indicating an exhaust pressure sensor problem which made the truck run like garbage and caused the DPF to become overloaded because it would never finish a regen cycle. Of course there was also the absolute crap fuel mileage and the dead pedal issues. I traded it for a 2019 Ram 1500 with the 5.7l. That truck gets up and goes and doesn't think twice about it, and gets better fuel milage that the Titan. There was a lot I loved about the truck, but equally as much that I hated about the engine.

It was a fine engine. Though the fuel economy was kind of knee capped, it is pretty nice. With them in the Titan XD, it would throw check engine lights for when DEF is low, oil needs to be changed, fuel filters, engine air filter. If I can find a Titan XD I'd buy one. However, transmission needs fluid and filter changes every 36,000 miles sadly.

I never worked on the V8. My favorite for a non com vehicle will always be the 275hp ISB5.9 VP44. The only problems that engine had was the lift pump and it needed a headgasket at least once before you wore it out. Dodge used it but had a one port ecm on it and the calibrations were 100% non adjustable. IE you could not adjust rear end ratios etc. You had to know some one at chrysler(at the time) who would look up the calibration you needed so the speedo / auto trans worked correctly.

I just drove mine 18,000 miles towing my 10,000lbs trailer. No real issues came up, just the DEF injector (same as the 6.7 Cummins btw) it was as a 10 minute job with a 10mm socket and available at the local auto parts store. Hardest part of the journey was up the continental divide in Montana! Wouldn’t get over 45 mph up that mountain. Great truck though, I know it would be better if I put it on a “diet”.

The XD is a different from the regular 1/2 ton in so many ways. The XD sits on a different frame, bigger than a 1/2 ton yet smaller than a 3/4 ton. Brakes and axles are beefier on the XD too.

Nissan full size trucks have never been well received in the US market. And the sales numbers show that, they’re dismal. Sure the fact that they don’t have 3/4 and 1 ton variants sure doesn’t help, and most buyers don’t understand or need/ want an XD truck that is a middle road between a 1/2 ton and 3/4t. Along with I would say most buyers aren’t even considering Nissan when they look for trucks. Although this 5.0L cummins was a massive selling point for them... but even then it didn’t stick. And frankly I think Nissan has their trucks at a price point that doesn’t represent a good value to the American truck market, and that keeps people at bay.

Very good and informative video. As a Nissan tech, I am definitely not a fan of these engines. Relatively problematic with mediocre performance and fuel economy. When this was announced, I was ready to place an order for one. But once I went to training on them and drove one, I quickly changed teams and bought a 2016 Ram 2500 Cummins. Price and capability were 2 of the biggest problems with this platform, causing the 5.0 to be dropped after only 4 years.

Really wish saw this video before buying my 2016 Nissan Titan XD. The reason why it didn't catch on is because of all the problems this video touched on happened a lot. In the first 2 years of owning my truck I have had EGR Actuator Replaced because it failed, Boche Fuel Pump just failed and the coolant electrical issue which is a common problem not stated in this video average of 4-6k total to repair. Overall the truck runs quite as stated averages around 15 mpg but I am now debating on switching out my turbo and buying an extra EGR valve for the future.

They don't. CAT is the only brand I'm aware of that pulls exhaust after the DPF for their EGR setup. It's considered a low pressure EGR system as well.

@@chadolson6323 what caterpillar did was they had a tube that picked up the exhaust after the DPF which had been scrubbed clean, no soot. From there they had a long tube that went to the EGR cooler and then into the intake. Adept Ape did a video on that some years ago. Caterpillar called the system CGI which was short for clean gas ingestion. It is probably the most reliable EGR system ever put out that had an extremely low failure rate on the entire system.
@nahrens2232 жыл бұрын
@@chadolson6323 as a diesel mechanic I can tell you from first-hand experience that the high-pressure EGR systems that pulls exhaust straight off the manifold tends to be pretty dirty and is expecially dirty on anyting maxxforce made by Navistar. In a school Bus application a maxxforce 7 DT466 sequential turbo engine has a life expectancy of about 150,000 miles. The high carbon soot completely polishes the cylinder walls to the point that the cylinder or cylinders completely lose compression.

I always wondered why they didn't use a variant of the 4bt brought up to say ~ 4.5 liters. All the emissions technology is there; just needed to be scaled to size. And a good balance shaft would have quelled the paint shaker tendencies of that engine. Probably cheaper development, too. 275 HP and 550 lb-ft was certainly doable. Variable Geometry Turbochargers are awesome! I have driven various diesel engines over the past 50 years. The ultimate diesel for a pickup truck is a Cummins 4BT. I have a 2016 Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd Ecodiesel. My wife drives a 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L Cummins. My daughter and son-in-law have a 2018 Ram 3500 Megacab 4wd 6.7L Cummins. So we are a diesel family. The weakness of all diesels sold today except the Ecodiesel. Is the transmission. The Ecodiesel running the ZF 8-speed is the best. The 5.0 running a CP4 was stupid. And the Titan XD being a 1/2 ton was dumb. If the Nissan XD had been a 2500 and 3500 with air suspension as standard equipment. And a VGT turbo. They would have sold really well. One of my coworkers bought a Titan XD. He put a 50 gallon fuel tank on. Added an Airlift 5000 system. And had an excellent towing vehicle!

As some wrote, this “was” a good or interesting engine in what “used” to be offered by Nissan. I have no issue with the engine or the truck in general, however … these trucks are overpriced when I checked (my opinion), and now their revised 5.6L gas engine requires “premium” fuel to achieve the printed numbers they advertise. Now with Carlos Ghosn gone, who saved this company, and a truck that sells about 1/90 the volume of a Ford F-150, or combined Chevy+GM 1500, I think this truck’s days are numbered and maybe the company itself (their offering of CVTs in other vehicles doesn’t have a great track record as I’ve read). Oh, and the Titan is no longer offered in Canada (they simply chose not to buy them over other offerings). I’d stick with a Chevy, Ford, GMC, RAM or Toyota for resale value reasons, and for service & parts supply in the long term. Sincerely yours.

A f-150 with the 3.5 ecoboost is a hard truck to beat if you're in the half tonne truck market imo chevy has the same old 5.3 v8 or 4.3 v6 or a turbo 4 cylinder ram has the junk 5.7 hemi then you got ford with either the 2.7 ecoboost or the 3.5 ecoboost or the 5.0 coyote and after test driving a 3.5 ecoboost a couple years ago that engine is a monster for what it is plus fords got the added bonus of aluminum bodies on their trucks which helps in the rust belt.

Sorry but the Titan is the best truck in the market.. Nissan just doesn't advertise it correctly. As for the company sticking around they just spent billions to redesign every model and Carlos was a scumbag. @@Belbivdevoe In what way is it the best truck in the market?. @@Belbivdevoe Thanks for your reply Nick. I like the idea of the Titan, and it’s got a great name that exudes strength for sure. I think the Tundra is probably the best truck when looking at total of numerous factors, however Nissan makes great products as well, like the new frontier (was in the pipeline before Ghosn left). It helps that former Ram Truck CEO Frank Diaz assisted Nissan during many years now. I’d consider a Frontier if I were in that size market.
