Aaron Humphrey I don’t have one so I can’t vouch for that specific application, but I will say I deleted my 6.7 power stroke and it made a HUGE difference. Gained almost 200 hp and 300 ft lb torque, runs cooler, and best of all is the mpg. I went from 12-13 mpg average to 18-19 mpg average. And I drive like an asshole. So I could imagine someone could at least get 20-24 mpg if driving conservatively. Point being, it’s totally worth it. For my truck it was like $2000 to delete and tune it and put on an aftermarket air intake. And since I drive around 450-500 miles a week, it paid for itself in saved fuel costs very quickly.

One thing I HATE about SEMA-type show interviews, is that no one EVER fully discloses the information on the ENGINES! Like 210-hp, 385-ft lbs torque, 475-lbs, etc. Still trying to dig up information relative to 'drop-in' friendliness (what 'computers' are required...what sensors, signals, etc. is it needing to actually RUN in a vehicle (like the AMC shown in the video)? I mean...I've got a 35-ft boat I've been really looking hard for a 200-300 hp diesel engine to drop in it...and this MIGHT be perfect for that application...but beyond the 'crate engine', what ELSE do I need to 'turn a key' to get it running? Seems to be common-rail, piezo injectors...but is this EEC? Any control boxes required come with the engine?

So if total electric pickups become less favorable and somewhat of a good deal in the future could the Cumming 2.8 be mated with a generator and used to convert the total electric trucks to hybrid? Keep some of the batteries and the electric drive if possible replace or add to the controller to start and stop the diesel generator when the batteries need charging.

These engines are awesome. They are also available in the Foton Tunland. Studding the top and bottom end would be really great for extra reliability. Was toying with the idea with compounds and adding a S300 or HX40 low pressure unit and keeping factory HE221W with 76mm exhaust. Also adding an air-to-water intercooler as a secondary intercooler. Here we have really high temperatures in summer. ECM software still needs finetuning. Or at least on mine. I have opened up one of these isf 2.8 engines. Ate #1 conrod bearing and broke piston #3 compression ring. Really simple to work on with really beefy connecting rods and crank.

That does not mean it was the first 2.8L they manufactured. It was simply the first 2.8L they offered in a kit. The ISF/QSF has been around longer than the engine kit program. I’ve worked on dozens of them. Mostly in forklifts, but I’ve seen them in other applications as well. Also, Cummins did not install that engine as you are suggesting. Man, I'd love to see some other manufacturers do this. Or maybe get a few of them together and get a law passed that if an engine meets a sufficiently high standard (say Euro5) it is accepted to the US as an on-road replacement or repower option. Isuzu has a number of solid diesel engines that are just begging for swaps, but since most never got certified for light duty, it's basically impossible to get them to pass emissions in anything smaller than a box truck.

A good replacement swap in a Perkins Diesel Ranger, or any small pickup that may or may not have had a Diesel option to begin with. Maybe you got a compact car, this thing should work great in it too, essentially doubling MPG in an already fuel sipping car. Maybe Toyota will wake up and smell the Diesel, for the next gen Prius hybrids.
