Thanks for the info. While cleaning out the family home after forty years, I found a moldy tape in the garage. It has Saturday morning cartoons, but at the very end, was 15 or so minutes of Dusty's Treehouse. The episode is about a bird from Nigeria. I'm going to post it later when I have time. Thanks again.

Another great episode! I wonder a bit whether the internet has spoiled us on the idea of "everything is forever." Every post, every video, every TV show or movie created today is going to be stored on some server as disk space goes from cheap to cheaper. So when I hear of shows that don't exist other than a few snippets here and there, it feels so sad that greatness can simply be lost. Long live Dusty's Treehouse!

I remembered watching and liking this show when I was little, but didn't remember much ABOUT it til watching this video, just that it existed and had a crow and a squirrel and a spider. Watching this video and the episodes you linked to in the Addendum vid, the thing that strikes me most is how sweet it is, even gentler than Sesame Street. I'm 41 now so my tastes in kids' television are badly skewed, but it felt like a warm blanket on a cold day and I'm really glad that at least a little of it has been uncovered.

This was a great series. It didn't start airing in our region until about 1974. That was almost too late for me at 10 years old, but it was so well done I watched it anyway, and continued to catch bits as my younger sisters continued watching it up through it's final season. I always thought it had a lot in common with the spirit of Captain Kangaroo, which was my favorite of this type of show. I wondered what ever happened to Dusty's Tree House and would LOVE to see it in syndication, though I'm ot sure if youngsters would enjoy it as much as earlier generations did. Thanks for plugging Stu Rosen's appearance in Rome! I watched that series but it didn't register to me that was him. I'm going to have to go back and watch now.

Two fairy tales stood out--one episode was almost entirely taken up with a puppet retelling of William Makepeace Thackeray's "The Rose And The Ring." This show also introduced me to Oscar Wilde's beautiful, melancholy "The Happy Prince." (I think the beginning of it might have been in this video at 14:15.) This one cut back and forth between Dusty narrating on a black background and painterly illustrations with moving cardboard cutouts/3D models. It was almost word-for-word from the original story. I remember that after it was done, they cut back to the treehouse where Maxine had been listening, and she told Dusty, "When you think about how unselfish that prince was...it kind of makes you feel as if you're not doing enough."

Dusty's Treehouse was on Channel 2 KNXT Los Angeles 1970-1980. I have to check Google Newspaper Archives the Press Courier ( Oxnard) to see if it was on earlier. It came on twice at 7:30am , and 2:00pm. I'm happy in hearing Dusty's themesong.. It brings back a lot of pleasant memories. When the song came on it meant Saturday's cartoons were over until next week. We turned the TV over to Mom and Dad , and played outside until dinnertime.

My dad and I used to watch this show together when I was a kid; he loved Stanley the Spider, or as he called him, "The Thing With All the Tennis Shoes"! This is sort of like Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. Two episodes that stand out in my mind are when 1. Dusty had a bad cold and told people to stay 10 feet away, and Maxine asked how he went to the bathroom, and 2. He made a stamp out of wood and a piece of yard. The stamp had the initials "R.S." and it stood for "Robert Scott". My parents were going to name me Robert Scott if I'd been born a boy.

I had the theme song for this show running through my head yesterday for no apparent reason. I couldn't remember what it was for but knew it was either a kids' show or one of those PBS shows about gardening. But I kept seeing the house across the street from the one I grew up in and that made no sense. Now it does! I finally remembered "Dusty's Treehouse" and the older girl who lived there was named Dusty Castleberry! (I always thought that name sounded like it was from a fairy tale!) Now I remember the show. The puppets were lame compared to the Muppets but I loved the little spider. And for some reason I disliked the blue squirrel! lol 😆

Its interesting that some of these types of shows like Dusty or Hocus Focus seem to be like distant forerunners of MST3K (especially considering Joel Hodgson had his own appearance on Nickelodeon in the 80s). Maybe it's more of a collective conciousness thing, where people were experimenting with public domain films, but I kind of wonder if Joel saw what worked with these shows and put his own spin on it.

@404 TV Thanks for the reply man. I was really excited about the idea of a series on the history of early Nickelodeon. But just not a personal fan of the way it was being narrated. Love the concept and wish the best for the series, just wasn't/isn't for me
@LadyBeyondTheWall Жыл бұрын
@@TDudley1995 I have to say: Same. Obviously the creator doesn't care, based on their reply (which sadly seems a bit immature of a response from someone in their 30s). But honestly, one thing that makes great documentaries, well, great.. is learning the history without knowing the personal opinions about politics, economic systems, religion or lackthereof, of the host. Plenty of the comments are just like "OH SICK BURN" or comments about politics and social justice in a Nickelodeon retrospective, which shouldn't really be happening, lol. But 🤷🏻♀ Their series I suppose. It's just unnecessary in something that's already wonderful and great on its own. It's just slightly disappointing because the best retrospectives I've seen on YT about Looney Tunes, Disney, etc have been ones where I don't have a clue about the political opinions or views on economics of the person doing the videos. It simply feels like pandering to people who share the hosts opinions instead of making it for everyone.
@TDudley1995 Жыл бұрын
@@LadyBeyondTheWall Obviously still has enough of a following/passion/cash flow to still be going. Haven't watched these since my original comment, which was in itself a bit snarky/immature admittedly Even if the style has changed or improved at all, it will never be the definitive guide to the history of Nickelodeon, due to the presentation of interesting facts being impacted by opinions and bad attempts at humor. I was intrigued by the early episodes like this, because not much was widely known about that era of the network. So these types of episodes still hold some value, albeit the vibe is overall killed for me and I can't go back and watch them. Oh well, to each their own
