She was deported from South Africa during her tour there in 1964 for refusing to perform in front of segregated audiences. She helped promote Motown to the UK. She sang everything from Italian ballads - where you will hear the full spine tingling range of her voice to sultry jazz, Brit pop with the Pet Shop Boys and everything in between. She left us far too soon but gave us a treasure trove of music. Recommended are You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me/The Look of Love/What Have I Done to Deserve This? (With PSB at the Brit Awards in 1988). Glad to say there’s plenty to see on KZbin. Thanks for this.

Dusty Springfield was a huge star in the 60's. She had hits with You don't have to say you love me and I only want to be with you. Many singers idolized her.

Aretha turned it down, they offered it to Dusty who ran with it and made it a hit. Aretha loved Dusty's version of the song, and later recorded and released her, very different, more gospel inspired version. Dusty's is the original and Quentin Tarantino wanted to use it in Pulp Fiction, he said he'd have cut that scene if he didn't get Dusty's permission to use her version of Son of A Preacher Man in the movie. It was a win win, as it exposed new generations to her fabulous, incomparable voice. RIP Dusty. Give her version of Tupelo Honey a listen, also The Look of Love, Just a Little Lovin', Breakfast in Bed, and Losing You.

I only heard of Dusty when someone posted a “Who Sang it Better?” video of her and Aretha with their version of this song. Had to give Dusty her props, it was a rare occasion that I chose someone over the Queen.

The song was a big hit for Dusty before anyone else recorded it. She was bigger in the '60s than any other era.

Dusty could also sing powerhouse. Ian Gillan vocalist of Deep Purple toured with Dusty in 65 and said she was the greatest female rock singer he ever heard. She did a duet of Mockingbird with Jimi Hendrix on one of her shows and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin played bass and arranged on her late 60s albums on the Phillps label. When Dusty recorded Memphis on Atlantic, she recommended Zeppelin to the label bosses and they immediately signed thr band up. I'd try I'm Gonna Build a Mountain or Don't Want to Go on Without You live on her BBC shows. Or powehouse recordings include I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself, You Don't Own Me, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me, or Di Fronte all Amore.

You finally discovered Dusty. She's a bit like Elvis in that, she can sing anything and any style. To hear just how versatile she is and how powerful her vocals can be have a listen to 'I just don't know what to do with myself.' Powerful! Dramatic! FABULOUS! 🤩

Dusty recorded two great albums for Atlantic: DUSTY IN MEMPHIS (produced by Jerry Wexler) and A BRAND NEW ME (produced by Gamble and Huff). Great songs from those you might like are BREAKFAST IN BED, JUST A LITTLE LOVING, A BRAND NEW ME, and SILLY, SILLY FOOL. Some of her earlier recordings like SOME OF YOUR LOVIN', YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY YOU LOVE ME, and GOIN' BACK are worth listening to as well.

She was just as good at Brel ballads (If You Go Away), Motown (Heatwave, Nowhere to Run To), gospel (You Better Run), folk (Two Brothers, My Lagan Love, The Water is Wide), pop melodrama (All I see is You, I Close my Eyes and Count to Ten), jazz (Peel me a Grape), and of couse an absolute favourite of Carole King (Going Back, Some of your Lovin), and Bacharach (A House is not a Home, Wishin an Hopin, I Just Don’t Know What to do with Myself, Look of Love). Her range was astonishing. And nobody ever sounded better than Dusty in her prime. Live recordings after '71 to be avoided as she lost her voice through laryngitis and alcohol/drugs, but '62-69 she was unparalleled.

Dusty is lauded as a icon of the 1960s. So much so that her material post-1969, with a couple exceptions, is much overlooked and/or fell on deaf ears at the time of release. This is a shame because for me she and her material only got better in the '70s and beyond. One of my favorite live performances is this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoqVhGZrjN6aock . It's an early Gamble/Huff composition/production.

Pat, when I saw that you were doing a reaction to Dusty Springfield...I just had to mention Larry Lurex because he recorded a Dusty song, “Goin’ Back”.......then the band Queen was formed...you may know him as Freddie Mercury😂🤩

Heard an interview with legendary producer Jerry Wexler, and he said he offered a to Aretha first; but she passed on ‘Son of a Preacher Man’. He then made the original with Dusty in 69’. Aretha then recorded her version soon after. The two versions are often confused depending on what a person heard first

Heard Jerry Wexler say he offered it to Aretha first, but she passed. Then recorded it with Chips Moments with Dusty in Memphis. Aretha recorded a version later. My favorite Dusty performance is a March 65’ British tv show called ‘Ready Steady Go’ titled THE Sounds of Motown’

I think she sang with Sir Tom Jones and others from the UK, she passed away I think early 00's and lived in the same town as George Harrison, I know her funeral was certainly held in Henley and from memory she did something with a late friend of mine Danny La Rue who would've been 96 yesterday 26th July and he also lived in Henley not sure if at the same time though, possibly something with the late Cilla Black again this is from memory as I'm good generation or so older than yourself

And she’s not even showing a third of her vocal capabilities. If you want to hear her more soulful side I highly recommend I’m gonna build a mountain, I can’t hear you. For vocals and power/technique I would say “you don’t have to say you love me”, “I only wanna laugh”, “I close my eyes and count to ten”. Or any duet with Tom jones. Haha she has quite de repertoire I HIGHLY recommend these performances!
