I'm glad to read this. Dusty's voice always sounds to me a bit flat [in pitch] even though she's clearly a skilled singer and extremely consistent. Dusty's fan clubs have some of the kindest folks you'd ever want to meet - like Simon Bell (above), who was a friend of Dusty's, and sang with her. Her fans seem to keep her sweet spirit alive - she was a fine human being, she was also very private. She supported a sanctuary in CA for wild animal rescues/big cats, bears, etc., from civilians (who 'thought it was cute' when it was little), she supported and visited orphanages. Dusty Springfield is one of the finest singers of all time, her humanity follows suit. Thank you.

Fil, once again you have blown me away by making me appreciate even more a song and an artist I have loved for as long as I can remember! The lyric, the melody, the phrasing, tone and delivery by Dusty all combine to create a true work of art which perfectly captures the coy, conspiratorial "Oooh My!" moment in the song's narrator's life! It's beautiful. Perhaps because of the sliding I had always imagined those key words "preacher's" "come" "take" "prise" (emphatic words) as sounding on a blue note. I was clearly wrong!! What amazes me is that Dusty could take this song from minor to major without most of us even noticing until you showed us Fil!! And how awesome that in major or minor Dusty keeps the song so smokey'!!! Thank you once again. (BTW I love how wide ranging your enthusiasms are in musical style. Would you consider doing an analysis video on Erykah Badu's performance of "What you gonna do for me" performed in front of Chaka Khan? And Tina Turner's performance of "Whatever you Want" live in Amsterdam in 1996 (Tina might be an interesting study how accurate can a rough voice be, and how rough can an accurate voice be, also the management of a maturer voice, backing vocals, backtracks etc. ? Cilla is a great singer, had a great vocal voice, had great songs, Paul McCartney wrote a couple of songs for her to record, (Step Inside Love) and (It's For You) both great songs. The Beatles were instrumental in Cilla getting her break, they'd get her up to sing at The Cavern back in the day.

Her longtime personal assist. said before performance Dusty's chest would turn very bright pink ...the flush of fright. But when she stepped on stage she became a different person, ie.very confident and enjoyed performing. Interesting that her death certificate stated occupation was not "singer" but was "entertainer." Love your lectures! Got Dusty's albums. Dusty sang originally "the only one who could EVER reach me" so she put the stress on word "ever". When she heard Aretha's version and the stress was on the word "who". Dusty started to copy that part from Aretha and sang: "the only one WHO could ever reach me". Please check both versions - the latter sounds better. Great job as always Fil! ❤

I've collected 60s & 70s female singers albums and love those who possess distinctive voices. Dusty, Aretha, Cher, Janis Joplin, Dionne Warwick, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Carly Simon etc. Fil gives the best information on youtube so here I am. Sorry I jumped in on this video. FIL...I've been playing drums for over 50 years. Ive seen it all....I thought. When you get a minute search on KZbin for El Estepario Siberiano. He's the freshest breath of fresh air in decades.Gsme changer. He plays a 3 piece , Kick , snare , floor tom. If needed ...and the speed doesn't matter , he uses the kick with the floor to simulate a double pedal. It's seemless and he's still playing the rest of the rhythm with his other hand. He 100% nails a Dream Theater , Slipknot, ..any drum part on a 3 piece. Timing, accuracy, precision , and speed ..probably the best ive ever seen. All on a 3 piece. search him and watch Everybody Dance Now. Yeah....he does a C&C Music Factory cover that will blow your mind. I would bother you with this type of request if I didn't think you would totally enjoy.

Dusty didn't think she was all that. Many times they say she would record a tract with no self monitoring and be spot on. Listen to her famous fade outs where she'd belt with the best of them. In answer to the question regarding whether professional artists get nervous before a show?! Most do, but it is more an anxiety anticipation of getting up there and doing it, it's usually a positive nervous tension that we as musician's get, prior to a show or gig, or recording studio session, it is a normal positive thing, (not a negative. It gets the adrelian going for the most part. This nervousness can start occurring days, sometimes weeks before performance time, all good, (we want things to go right), make sure everyone is on the same page, connection with all those involved in a show, is very important and necessary for a good outcome. It is very normal for artist's, actor's, talk show's, (radio and TV), people for example, David Letterman and the like, The Johnny Carson's etc, Prime Minister's, leader's, President's, Royalty, all require to be well prepared for all event's and occasions. It comes with the task, and territory. Board meeting's, etc. I think most people go through this type of thing sometime in life, even around the table at a family birthday, Xmas get together, it just may mean someone has to take the floor. Foot notes can help. Hope this explanation helps.

Thanks Fil! I have experienced the same anxiety you describe! Boardrooms can be very anxiety provoking. It was Petula Clark who commented in an interview that her good friend Dusty, had an unusually tough time of it. As a performer herself, she suggested that this wonderful singer's performance anxiety was quite extreme. Hence the question. The software you are using is quite amazing and you bring to it with your vocal skills and knowledge an appreciation for subtleties that reveal things I can only "sort of" hear until you explain them. Oh, Dusty Springfield! I've loved her voice since I first heard it as a kid. So incredibly skilled and it all seems so effortless. It would be interesting to hear your analysis of her cover of Burt Bacharach's and Hal David's The Look of Love. She said the way she was asked to sing it seemed 'too sexy' and I think it was Burt B. who said that it's perfect and to keep doing it that way. That song is a lot different type of song than this one is so am curious to hear what you'd have to say about it, and how here voice would compare live and in studio. I wonder if it was a conscious thing she did to go to major scale with her voice on the live performance. Either way, that's impressive.

Oh Fil, this was so wonderful. I never realized she was singing a minor note sometimes and a major note sometimes in this. Yeah, the thing she does sliding into notes and out of notes is so sexy and soulful. She does it in such a subtle way. I wish she would have done a gospel LP. She did do one gospel song on the Memphis LP, I think it was. Thanks so much for doing this. I think this live performance of the song is terrific, she was really enjoying the backup singers she had. Great back up singers would always get her going. Also, she would shine in front of a great orchestra.
