Dutch Bucket Hydroponics - Growing Cucumbers, Tyria and Iznik

If you're looking to grow cucumbers in your Dutch Bucket setup, it's a good idea to find some Parthenocarpic varieties so you don't have to worry about getting help from bees for the pollination. Two varieties I like are Tyria and Iznik. Both are very productive and perform well in a greenhouse environment.

Glad you're back Bobby. I miss the longer more in depth vids you always used to make, especially about hydroponic greenhouse gardening. Your channel was one of the first ones I found when I started researching hydroponics a few years ago and I enjoyed your vids a lot. I mostly use DWC and Aeroponics but still like to see all types of hydro systems.

Per your techniques, I've had great success with Iznik cucumbers on my deck in Dutch buckets with water level adjusted so that lots of the roots are in the air. I tie the plants to a homemade tressel so they can climb and support the fruit. We're talking over 30 fruit per plant all the time these days. I never see honey bees or very few other bees and last year I had plenty of yellow flowers on normal cucumber plants but few of the female flowers ever turned into fruit even though I tried to hand pollinate. So I went with Iznik this year which don't need to be pollinated. They taste great! I pick them when they are about 4.5" or so inches long and really fat shaped. BTW, Iznik is in Turkey. The water flow is 24/7 and I aerate the main water tank. The plants are happy! I started them in pots of soil and they grew right away, when they were about 6 inches tall I then put them in rock wool cubes and 2" cups. Warm weather was late here in northern Virginia this year, didn't really get started until late May. The Iznik's seem to love the heat and sun. I use buckets I buy for $3 each from Firehouse Sub stores, they are very study and so thick light doesn't get in so I don't have algae, don't need to wrap them in aluminum foil.

I've been growing my Cucumbers from a 20 gallon tote (it holds about 15 gallons of nutrient solution. Where the hand holds are on the ends have holes so you can not over fill it.) using the kratky method. I grow 4 vines per tote. Set the totes along a wire fence and the cucumbers will climb the fence.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but heres what I heard/ learned over time and through experience: Bugs know the difference between a healthy and a not so healthy plant like cucumbers. If you manage to push your plants to the limit, what you acchieved quite well, bugs will notice. The infestation might be a little worse inside a greenhouse compared to an open space, but super healty hydro plants will shine for the bugs like a lighthouse does for ships :D I would recommend other plants (differennt types of flowers , depends on the bugs you have) that attract the nantural preditors of these bugs, if you got the space. This way you can reduce pesticides (without pesticides will likely not work completly) and have some flowers which is nice, too.

I have mine at the five year mark. That goes for some of my tomatoes also. I cut them back to the first node in early winter and put them in the barn. Sometimes I bring a couple into the house for the winter and they will produce but I live in the High Desert and the warm sun coming thru the windows in enough for them. These are grown with the passive Kratky method.

Powdery mildew tells you 2 things - too much humidity on the leaves, and not enough air-drying air flow. Either open up the grow house for dry air flow (or forced air fans), cover up the major water sources causing evaporation, ... or clip off various leaf sections up the plant vine and open up the airflow of the plants. Same for flatlander gardening or vertical plant growing. Proper airflow and proper control of moisture - powdery mildew doesn't appear.

As a long time gardener what I have come to suspect is that the seed quality itself is becoming DNA degenerative. In other words, stagnant. Seed companies are continuing to grow out seed from plants that have disease and that is passed along to you. And of course what is disease in a plant? A bug attacks something dying, that is its job, it is a eating composter. And disease calls more pests. I do find Ocean Solutions (Amazon), used from the beginning, soaking the seed, sprouting, then growing out to fruitation...helps considerably. The best advice I can give you is to save your own seed. Yes, it will still be disease ridden for a few generations but then gradually, as it adapts to your nurturing, it will again start to produce a healthier plant more able to resist pests and disease. I myself have not found any other solution that is consistent, including essential oil fogging. If you live anywhere with a desert type atmosphere, try Native Seeds. I have more consistent success with Johnny's Seeds than anyone else. Ironically the ones I have had the most trouble with come from rareseeds.com which surprised me. I thought at first it was just a fluke but after using their seeds for over a decade, their seed consistently produce poor plants in my local, and that assessment applies to plants they sell. One thing that is important, try not to buy seed long-term from geographical regions that are very different from your own. Peace Be Upon you, keep trying.
