That is a great property, those huge pine trees are beautiful, and the house looks like is in good conditions, too. I often watch videos of foreigners buying land and derelict houses in Portugal and think of the amount of work they are putting themselves in. In your case, you are a young couple and the house seams nice (not a ruin at all), so you are up to a good start.

Hi Anthony; thank you! Yes I have a drone video already but it’s more a beautiful long drone shot and I don’t think people will like it. So I have a new idea: lisa is drawing a map to design the land so maybe we will show that and combine it with drone shots. Nice property you have there. Congratulations on your purchase. The plant on the lower terrace looks like giant reed (Arundo donax) which thrives in damp places so it's a good indicator that the soil there receives and retains a lot of water. The unidentified fruit tree is undoubtedly a nespereira (English: loquat; Latin: Eriobotrya japonica). Good luck on your new adventure!

Wow you know your plants ;). Yes the giant reed is mainly on a lower point of the land. We are doubting if it’s a good or bad thing they are there…?

@@Quinta.Ivonne Just me trying to be helpful. :) The giant reed is considered an invasive species in Europe so it's something to keep a watchful eye on. But it's also a good soil stabiliser, and will help to trap any sediments washed down the property from the higher terraces, especially when the rains come. See how the land performs over the winter and how much (if any) erosion you get. It may be beneficial to keep it, or at least some of it. It's also a really good biofuel!

Gefeliciteerd met dit huis! erg mooi en zo op het eerste gezicht perfekt onderhouden! Het feit dat de avocado boom is zo vol met vruchten wil zeggen dat er meer dan genoeg water is. Het riet duidt daar ook op. De nespera werd al genoemd in de comments. Ik vind het niet zo lekker: veel grote pitten, weinig vruchtvlees. Het lijkt een groot terrein te zijn (2, 3 hectares?), om dat met een bushmaaier in het gareel te houden is véél werk. Het kleine jonge boompje is, denk ik, een kerseboom. Dat alles droog is is normaal voor de tijd van het jaar. Het huis lijkt me redelijk veilig wat betreft brandgevaar. Wel altijd alle dennenaalden ea branbaar meteriaal opruimen. En een sprinklerinstallatie is een heel goed idee. Wat betreft schaduw: loofbomen zijn veel meer resistent tegen brand en geven natuurlijk ook veel schaduw. veel suc6 met jullie plannen!

Ja wat jij zegt is een goeie: er is heel de zomer geen water gegeven en die avocado boom doet het goed dus er is water! Het is 4Ha groot. Aanleggen van watersysteem staat idd op ons lijstje ;).

Beautiful property guys! You are very lucky! I was hearing you talking about shade around the house, it is very nice, but be VERY CAREFUL, don't have big trees near the house. You may have seen recently the problems we have in Portugal with wild fires. Your property has a LOT of fuel to burn. Be careful about planting trees near the house. Those big pine trees are great. I'd have them have a "hair cut". There seems to be a lot of old dead branches. Have those cut, for fire safety. Keep the bare minimum of plan fuel close to the house. As you are so remote, and without any more houses nearby, in case of a big fire, like these ones we had last week, your place will be of low priority for the firefighters, as not a lot is at risk, just one house. Never, ever, rest. Keep it clean during the whole Summer! And again, be careful with trees near the house! If you ever have a fire there (God forbid) your house will be much safer if it doesnt have big trees around.

Amazing property, welcome to this lovely country. Watch out with your lovely doggo for the pine tree caterpillars. After January they start growing, and in spring they come down the trees in massive balls or usually lines (they are called processionary because they imitate a snake and follow each other). Super interesting for the dogs, but super dangerous. Can make their tongue fall out or even kill them if fully ingested. It is an absolute plague in Portugal, not much to do unfortunately in pine areas, except control the doggo. I have a super curious 2 year old GSD in also a 4Ha farm, so last year was a full ordeal to not let them find them.

De fruitbomen waren bevoordeeld compleet verstopt tussen de prikkel planten en nu kunnen we er gewoon bij. De vorige eigenaren zijn helaas overleden, in 2022. Ja ze waren echt goed bezig.

Orange fruits are called "nesperas" in Portuguese, and the tree is a Nespereira :D. I live in Coimbra but also saving to buy some land for ecoturism, it is a dry micro climate but feasable if you have some man power to work the land properly, welcome to Portugal guys!

Proficiat, wat een geweldig prachtig stuk grond én huis! Je groententuin kan je best dichtbij de meest vochtige grond (waterbron) zetten en een plek met relatief veel schaduw. In warmere landen verbranden de groenten in de zon en moet je schaduwdoeken hangen... Ik spreek spijtig genoeg uit ervaring 😂 Best ook binnen de omheining rond je huis, als je niet wil dat de dieren alles opeten 😉

Boa sorte, propriedade muito boa, casa muito bem conservada e bonita. Muito trabalho pela frente no exterior, limpar todo esse mato, vai dar muito trabalho. Arvores tambem tem de ser cortadas devido ao foco de incendios. Tem muitas arvores de fruto e amendoeiras, jardim precisa de agua para voltar a ficar bonito. Obrigada por virem viver em Portugal.

That plant everybody called bamboo, it's not bamboo, it's Cana- comum, or Cana do reino, "Arundo Donax". The Canas are very useful to support plants on vegetable gardens or flowers.

The fruit tree with the small yellow fruits is a " nespereira" it's fruit is "nespera"... You have to pick the avocados from the tree to rippen...avocados DO NOT rippen on the tree...pick them and wait a few days and they will rippen.

nespera is this fruit tree or chinese wollmispel in german, you should connect the rainwaterpipes with a tank or sthg like a pool, raining at least 4 month winter and springtime, to save the groundwater you shouldnt waste the rainwater, the unknown tree by the house is a wallnut tree

From say 40kE to 120kE. for similar plot of land: Central Portugal, below 400M elevation, 2-3 hectares, with a ruin or abandoned farm building (with open permit to build or renovate). At least two water access points, walking distance to a village, with or without terraces. So we kind of suspect some very over-priced properties.

What a lovely property! Nice to see some more Dutch speaking people around. Personally, with a property like yours, I would make water collection a real priority. (perhaps some gutters and 1000L IBC tanks next to many of those buildings) Perhaps also some ponds spread across the property. And probably also a good idea to clear an area to protect the buildings from wildfires, as we've just seen. I think they recommend an area of 30m from the houses that you keep well maintained and well watered? Worth thinking about, given recent events. But looks wonderful! So many possibilities.

Well just seen your blog and it looks like the previous owner made the classic mistake of renovating the living are first instead of the garden, too many off gridders do the same. When you buy a property like that. The first thing is to sort the garden and get your food growing as we all have to eat and better from the garden than from the shop and once started the crops then you can renovate the house to your liking as the crops will grow without you, but you are lucky as the house looks habital so you can get straight to the garden as it definitely needs work.. Voordat je het weet is deze groot zodat je huis er schade door gaat krijgen. Recent ervaring mee gehad, en dat viel uiteindelijk tegen, en was heel jammer. I would say first time get someone to cut down everything. Then buy goats since goats eat everything and are not picky eaters like sheep. They will maintain the property for you long term and you won’t pay a lot of money in cutting

I really like your house and garden but one thing that is a worry are all the pine trees you have on your property. You have to be very very careful come January/February to check for processionary caterpillars. They are a really big threath to your dog and you as well. You can see the nests, they look like white cotton candy up in the trees.
