The Dutch firefighters are so kind, they put out the fire and washed/foamed down the cars as well. That is service with a smile. :)

Excellent fire attack with two experienced fire crews. I wish the fire service in the USA would watch and learn from Dutch firefighters! That attack with high density foam really accomplished both extinguishment and protect exposures, but stopped the fire spread immediately. That type fire in the USA would've had multiple big trucks, aerial ladders and personnel, with lots of hose used. Good work by everyone. Keep up the great services to your citizens and community, and stay safe!

My thoughts exactly. Cannot believe they take so long to get water on most fires in the USA and have so many trucks turn up to jobs. Without sounding unkind and rude many of their tactics in the States seem to be outdated and done because of tradition.
@bwbw1341

Andy Oxley ... you're exactly right. We don't let technology stand in the way of 200 years of tradition. From the helmets to the challenge of who can get there first, to the wet downs and bell ringing in new apparatus, tradition is the way. My last position in the fire department I tried to change the way we did things. To using foam attack, smaller apparatus, modern helmets etc, but was shot down because it wasn't traditional. Plus almost all city departments have the union. They are very powerful and dictate policy, manpower, pay, and benefits. Fire chiefs demand more personnel, more stations, more equipment, more apparatus, because that is leverage to increase pay and pensions. Lots of apparatus and personnel responding to fires shows the city management how important they are! If the chiefs even suggest to decrease and modernize to today's methods he would get run out of a job by the union. He goes along to get along and it benefits his salary and pension as well. The chance of a firefighter being terminated due to some malfeasance is almost impossible due to unions, arbitration, civil service boards and lawyers. There are a few departments that are trying to modernize and use technology, but they usually are mocked by others. I tried to get my department to switch to the MSA Gallet fire helmet, but was laughed at. I'm retired now after nearly 48 years in the fire service. So I'm not concerned anymore. Change isn't acceptable and it's not easy to change culture within an organization. The old saying " we've done it this way for years and it's worked for us". 10-12 years ago the Charleston South Carolina thought the same thing. Until they came upon a furniture store warehouse fire. Doing it the " old way" cost the life of 9 firefighters. Would've been more if a number of them hadn't been able to escape. The following investigations showed they were really no where near where they should've been. Until someone in a big city department realizes it can be done better, faster, cheaper, and safer and changes the culture the USA will never change.

@@bwbw1341 Its good to hear from someone over in the states who thinks like this. I watch numerous video clips of firefighting in the US and when i comment all i get is abuse or crap comments about how they are the best in the world and we are way behind. In the UK we are far from the best out there and many of our European fire departments are better than us but we are miles ahead of the States. I read the report on the Charleston 9 several years ago and it was sad and also shocking how those firefighters died for no other reason than tradition. The FDNY is one of the worst with some of the worst operating procedures i have seen. I watched the video clip of the guys on the roof of a building in LA a few weeks ago who got seriously injured for no other reason than shit procedures which makes my blood boil, but like you say people dont want to change.

Andy Oxley... sir, ignore those who can't face reality. Since 9-11, American firefighters have been feted and honored as " heros". It's gone to their head. And subsequent training academies kind of puff up the cadets that they're special. Well, I started in 1968 at 18. The first 18 yr old appointed to that dept. the first order I got was to "shut up and listen". 5 years later I enlisted in the US Air Force and went into the USAF fire training school. Although I had 5 years of experience once again the first order was to "shut up and listen". I had more civilian experience than most of my instructors. I actually rescued one during a live fire interior structure training. And after 48 years I never once heard that I was a hero, and never thought of myself as a hero. I was a guy who wanted to be a firefighter, and it was a job. Constant training, personal introspection of every call made, including EMS runs, usually brought about thought that I could've done better. It seems every generation of trainees were more self centered and seeking glory for themselves. It was tough to train them to realize that the word team doesn't have "I" in it. But in the USA many think they're the best. They can't accept there's better ways to do the job. That starts at the top and works it's way down. Once the top boss decides that the old tradition culture needs to go, researches world wide for what others are doing based on technology and experience, adopts the attitude that his ( or her) department will be really the best, then possibly a true upgrade will take place. But since we can't even get them to accept a better and safer fire helmet and continue to wear a design from the 1700s I wouldn't hold my breath. Before I retired from my last department I had a change done to the type of foam we were using to a more effective and modern type, and convinced one fire company to try it, became a revelation. Within a few hours of post training they got a booming house fire. They did a standard USA version of fire attack using the foam and were amazed how fast and easy the extinguishment was with little to no overhaul. By the time I retired the old ways were returned to. I'm glad I'm not fighting the old style culture anymore.

@@bwbw1341 I've been in the service near 25 years and the job has continually changed. We had a similar style fire helmet to the ones you guys still have in the USA and we have changed several times over the years. Without a doubt the new style helmet we use today which is made by Rosenbauer is miles better than the ones you guys use over in the States. All our procedures continually change when new technologies or better equipment comes along which I think is by far best way to do things. It's pretty rare over here to see a firefighter to get seriously injured these days.

Is there a reason to use foam over water? Isnt form Carcinogenic
@RubsNL
@RubsNL 3 жыл бұрын
The foam sticks to surfaces for a while and closes it off from air which helps extinguish fires more easily and forms a temporary barrier stopping it's spread. Health / environment wise you're better off containing a fire asap than letting more sheds with god knows what in them go up in the air.
