Bitterballen or kroket have a ragoût inside. Most of the time it is beef or veal. There are options with cheese, mushrooms, shrimps. But not all places have the other options. A lot of stores now have vegetarian options. Yes kroket on bread. You sqeeze the kroket so it opens up add mosterd and eat the whole sandwich 😋 Bitterballen are snacks for when you have a beer or something.

Charming video you made. Hopefully you had a great time and the bitterballs didn't burn your mouth too much ;) Good job on the Haring btw. A lot of people can't appreciate them because they find them too fishy.

Nice video , on the bitterballen , the inside is not gravy its a ragout . that can be made of several types of bouilions stocks made of meat . chicken , fish or even vegetables . the meat is verry tenderly cooked and the beef stock has flower added to it to make a roux then the meat is added . its quite a complex refined recipe . When one makes it from scratch . in fancy resaurants you get a more liquid form and small pastry cups. Or in italy if you want a pasta bolognese . you ask for a ragout . There are some video on youtube that have simplified versions of the recipes and you can make them your self .

GREAT comment! Thank you so much for the insight. We had to laugh a little bit because where we are from in the US, “ragout” and “roux” are words you don’t hear often which is why we went with “gravy” lol Love it!

That was fun to watch. My hometown is Rotterdam. The ZOO is a ten minutes walk from my home. I know Amsterdam and Utrecht well, also Gouda I come frequently, and Schoonhoven I visited. The Netherlands is not that big. You've seen a lot already. Next time go further south: Belgium. I live on the axe Amsterdam - Brussels so I know most of the major cities on that line. The Belgians are great people, more laid back than Dutchmen; their food even better. Thanks for sharing your adventures! ✌🏼🇳🇱

The substance in a bitterbal or kroket is ragout which forms the base mixed with beef or anything else. My fovorite though is with calf meat. With Goulash is also a great version. Another great one is with shrimps...

The herring you had is not raw ! All herrings have been treated by snap freezing @ around -35C and/or salting. They are much healthier and safer to eat than the overrated Sushi`s and dubious Sashimi`s where the fish flavours have been masked by dominant sauces .

OK - hot -- lol -- love this channel -- FYI -- that kinda spider is called a Cellar Spider her in the States. -- ya don't think about species continuity around our small globe...in the big scheme of living things. Cellar spiders don't really hurt much of anything, but can live in large quantities in a place like a basement or crawlspace...making it feel creepy.

@@MKandTJ The difference between a pancake and a poffertje is the addition of yeast to the batter, which causes the poffertje to rise and become airy. A lot of butter is also used for a poffertje, both in the batter and for frying.

Licorice is so divisive! 😅 I have never met a dutch person who doesn’t like or at least tolerate it and I have also never met a North American who does like it. I guess it’s really something you need to grow up with in order to acquire the taste.
