Jerry Lawler tells the story of Kamala slightly differently (and probably more accurately). The idea for the makeup came from an actual painting that Lawler has in his house (which I believe is shown on a video somewhere) depicting tribal characters with the exact same drawings on their bodies. The name “Kamala” comes from “Kampala”, which is the capital of Uganda (Kamala’s kayfabe “homeland”). In an interview; Lawler said he came up with the idea of giving James Harris a character that required makeup because he had very “kind” and “innocent” eyes so it would be difficult to make him a heel without adding some makeup to obscure his eyes to make him look more ‘sinister’. Lawler liked Harris a lot and knew that they could make money together. Harris took the Kamala gimmick national and made a career out of it.

Harris worked his gimmick about as well as any wrestler has ever worked their gimmick. Up there with the Undertaker, Kabuki, and Abdullah the Butcher. If he had come along with that a decade earlier he could have made big money just touring the various territories.
@philliplandry4139
@philliplandry4139 2 жыл бұрын
That is correct in a way. He became Kamala right before the Territories were closing down. His gimmick fit pretty well during the WWF expansion 1984-1986 which he came in 1986 but the problem was, it wasn't Vince creation. Also right before he left the WWF in 1986 that Vince all of a sudden wants guys to either fit the bodybuilding type or trademark their gimmicks. My suggestion is for Kamala to have a better career. He should have gone to WCW during the Jim Herd and Bill Watts era. Herd were looking for more wrestlers with gimmicks and Watts wanted more black wrestlers. He came to WCW at the wrong time when Eric Bischoff was in charge. Anyhow he had competed in the WWF and was a member of the Dungeon of Doom. In Bischoff's eyes, he was considered the pre WWF (1984-1993) wrestler and was too Southern for his taste. Which is a no no on Eric's part. His gimmick was good at the right era (80's-early 90's). The only problem was, he always comes in during the company's transition period. That's not a good sign for any wrestler with their own gimmick.

According to James Harris he had just got back from England, he had been there about a year and a half working with Big Daddy. He was back home because he broke his ankle. He went to the coliseum Because the airline had lost all of his gear and the Dream Machine Troy Graham made clothes for the wrestlers as a side hustle. They worked together in Mississippi for the Culkin's and we're booked by Dutch's buddy Frankie Cain.

I was so afraid of Kamala. I went to see him wrestle Hulk Hogan and he was 367lbs. He was huge ! He scared the F?ck out of me because I thought it was real. That's what is missing they don't tell stories anymore with the matches and gimmicks.

Kamala was such a good character that he had character derived from his character, the Botswana Beast. Kamala drew money every where he worked.

It was a different lense because territorial fans, for the most part, weren't thinking "what kind of gimmick is that" but "this guy is like 300 pounds, no one knows where he came from and he just beat a bunch of guys who usually don't lose!" That's why people side eyed Samoa Joe's nation of violence gimmick and kidnapped by ninjas angle but not The Wild Samoans or Jim Cornette trying to "sterilize" Baby Doll. Well, not completely. The Samoan fans rolled their eyes at The Wild Samoans eating raw fish on their way to the ring, the black fans at the guys eating water melon during promos, BUT those things weren't exclusive to pro wrestling either.

So sad how he was treated. He made so many people alot of money yet they paid him chicken feed. Now he's gone and thats sad. RIP Big guy. Thanks for entertaining us for so many years. I'm so many scumbag promotions screwed you money wise.

I saw Kamala wrestle many times in Mid-South, especially during his feud with JYD. Let's put it this way, the blacks that were huge JYD fans would get a chant going saying send that N back to Africa. It didn't seem to phase him as he would act like he was going out of the ring to attack people always, but never seemed to acknowledge or care what they chanted at him. I suspect the huge animosity from crowds increased his paycheck. Also, if you have never seen the video of Kamala body slamming Andre the Giant with authority during his time in Mid-South find the video on KZbin. I never remember Andre bleeding other than that encounter.

There was nothing racist with the kamala gimmick. He was supposed to be from an African tribe, was probably an accurate character

I do hate all of this hindsight racism. The word racist has been severely misconstrued and devalued over the years. There was nothing wrong with the Kamala gimmick.

Who cares if something is deemed "racist?" That word was created by a chewish communist Trotski in order to intimidate those who didn't go along with "their" plan. And you can do some independent research if you don't believe me.

I think it's great that the hosts of these shows no just as much about wrestling as the wrestlers do. And that really makes a great back and forth conversation. I don't know him very well but Hannibal's interviews are terrible.
