The Sugar Hold was one of Stu Hart's favorite holds. He'd get a guy locked in and struggling to get out until he ran outta gas then Stu would just transition from one submission hold to another. Says a lot that when guys approached Gene about becoming a wrestler he would invariably send them to Stu.

Learned how to apply the Sugar Hold in Brazilian jiu jitsu training, because our coach knew just as much about wrestling as he did BJJ. It’s as brutal as these guys all say. Your shoulders feel like they’re ready to dislocate from the pressure, you’re stretched out, and completely defenseless from taking strikes to the head.

Gene was legit as they come. Taught Stevie Segal (Steven Segal) some manners on set (and got fired for it) but hell, why not. Gene was true class and will be missed. RIP Gene.

You´re a jerk. We all know by now that Gene LeBell lied about it. Watch Viking Samurai´s interview with Gene LeBell friend Steven Lambert. Lambert said that Seagal wasn´t choked out at all and that they all lied about it.

Didn't happen. That story has been debunked and was clarified by 2 men who were ((actually there)) Steven Lambert and Conrad Palmisano attested to it, there definitely was an incident, but Seagal wasn't choked unconscious and shit his pants lol I've seen a ton of people choked unconscious, never seen anyone completely crap their pants. I've seen people piss though.

I remember judo Gene when I was a kid in the 60s at the Olympic auditorium in Los Angeles, he was the real deal

Gene Lebell was pure class, in and out of the ring. I saw his match where he beat Peter Maivia for the title. Yeah, it's all a work but he made it look completely credible. He had the mat skills along with the submission skills; he would fit well in the sport as it is today. And he trained some of the best today, including Daniel Brian. The best practitioner of the Sugar Hold today is Zach Saber Jr. Would sure be great if we could get him over here.

Absolute legend, he's a former NWA heavyweight champion, does Gene have a Cauliflower Alley accolade? He should have a WWE Legacy award.. Autobiography is amazing, definitely read it..

Seems like I've heard or read that LeBell's family occasionally used him as a shooter when somebody was getting to out of line. For example, if somebody was taking advantage of their statues or involved in an important angle and decided to get to rough the others that maybe didn't have the experience or knowledge to protect themselves, the bully might find themselves in the ring getting punished by LeBell. Not only did LeBell do Judo, but catch and boxing as well.
