Dutch expressions have been one of my favorite parts of Dutch culture to learn about. I've seen that they have expressions for literally everything. So join me at the kerstmarkt (Christmas market) in Haarlem, where I go around and ask Dutch people what's their favorite Dutch expression.

My favorite expression is this one: ''Bij het komen, of bij het gaan, bezoek brengt altijd vreugde aan.'' It means that you will always be happy to have visitors. If their arrival doesn't make you happy, their departure will.

That’s a nice one I wasn’t familiar with. It reminds me of one of my favorites “logees en vis blijven drie dagen fris” (sleepover guests and fish remain fresh for three days)

It is nice that expressions are a very dynamic part of the language. A few years ago a woman was smiling / grinning every day to Bokito, a large adult male Gorilla in the Rotterdam Zoo. She thought it very funny that he grinned back, but he was warning her not to be so annoying and behave suitably submissive. At some point he had enough, jumped over the moot, teached her a lesson and thrashed the place in the process. Since then we call an especially rugged structure "Bokitoproof".

That the Expressions are indeed a very part of our language is noticeable in your own comment. Because you used another expression to explain a expression. "Haar een lesje leren" Learning here a Lesson= Learning the hard way And I've you survive a gorilla attack wich is (partially) because of youre own behavior. I do so love dutch expressions XD (and crap like heerlie de peerlie does NOT count - _-) Here's some more : 'Wat heb ik nou weer aan m'n fiets hangen?!' What is hanging of my bicycle this time? Meaning: what's happening to me? 'Iemand een koekje van eigen deeg geven' Giving someone a cookie of their own dough -Giving someone what he deserves (or more like: make them reap what they sow, haha) 'Het gras van de andere kant bekijken' Looking at the grasses from the other side -Meaning: being dead and buried 'De weg naar de hel is geplaveid met goede voornemens' The way to hell is paved with good intentions If you want to do good things, its no good untill you actually make it happen. Wich is a bit like: 'praatjes vullen geen gaatjes' -Talking doesn't fill any holes 'Door de bomen het bos niet meer zien' Not seeing the forest through the trees -Getting so much information, you can no longer oversee things 'Dweilen met de kraan open' Mopping while the tap is still open -Fighting symptomes instead of the source Met een kanon op een mug schieten Shooting a mosquito with a canon Overreacting I could go on for ages 😂 Also fun to mension are the many different ways to ask if someone had lost their mind: Ben je helemaal betoeterd? Ben je nou helemaal van de pot gerukt? Ben je belatafeld? (that's an odd one) Of door de ratten bezeken? Besodemieterd? Of van Lotje getikt? Difficult to explain, but ever so funny Thanks for another great video!

As a Dutch person who grew up in Norway I only got to learn a handful of Dutch expressions, but it was fun to see people mention the ones my family and I use daily! (“Heelaas pindakaas” and “kijken kijken, niet kopen”)

5:02 I think you misunderstood him, he says "Gooi de hekken maar open" (Throw open de gates) which does mean "Let's go wild". The idea behind it is when going to a festival or concert, they open the gates and everyone goes crazy to find the best spots (or example with shopping... on black friday when they open the stores and everybody rushes in for the sales)

As someone who has Dutch as their first language, I'm pretty sure the one at 4:51 is actually "gooi de hekken maar open" (just throw the gates open), instead of "de gekke" (the crazy). I might be wrong, but I'm just trying to help lol. Nice video!

I don’t know how this came up on my home page, but really enjoyed it. I am Dutch by birth, but moved to England aged 14. I lived in Eindhoven. Like to get back to see family, but it has been a while, obviously, due to the Covid. One of my favourites: Alsof er een engeltje op je tong piest, it’s like an angel has peed on your tongue, meaning that what you have eaten or drank tastes really nice 👍👍😊😊

My favorite one is 'Nu breekt mijn klomp' (now my clog breaks), it means to be totally perplexed, or not understand something because you totally didn't expect it to happen. In English I would say 'I am shocked' in a similar situation.

My two favourites are two I learned from my dad, who's a Bosschenaar (I'm from NH): 1. Zoals je doet wordt je gedoet (means, the way you treat others is how others will treat you) 2. Wie goed doet, goed ontmoet (means, those who do good will receive good) Oh, but let's not forget, "van de wal in de sloot," usually in the context of someone's actions, meaning that someone doing something for you might help you from the shore into a ditch. I.e., great, bud, you just made the situation that much worse, lol.

"De poppen aan het dansen zijn" is one of my favorites: the dolls are dancing, meaning (I think), that the s**t has hit the fan. Also, may I add that I greatly admire and envy your command of Dutch. "wie het laatst lacht, lacht het best" means something a little different that what the lady at 5:15 says. It means basically that during some series of events, the person that in the end emerges as a winner or got the better of all the others has the final victory. It is also used to say that sometimes people look down on someone or something, but with preservation, in the end, that person is proven right or achieves their goal and everyone is no longer laughing at at them.

This is really funny. I think expressions exist in any language, I know a lot of the old expressions, because my mother used them in every day language. As a child I collected her expressions in a notebook. One of my favorites is: "de duivel schijt altijd op de grootste hoop" which means: The rich will always get richer. I have found this true, in my experience.

I didn't know we had more expressions than other languages. Thanks. Remembered learning many of them in elementary school. Like 25 at a time and getting tests on it. Got myself a spreekwoordenboek and later on one in 4 languages (dutch, english, french, german). Some don't have an equivalent in another language. Different professions and dialects all have their own. As a child the comic Donald Duck had pictures like this painting where you also have to guess: Nederlandse spreekwoorden, een schilderij uit 1559 van Pieter Bruegel dat minstens 125 zegswijzen toont

One of my favorite ones is "beter een vogel in de hand, dan tien in de lucht", which translates to: "it's better to have one bird in your hand than to have ten in the sky", and it means something like: "It's better to have a little bit of something than to have nothing at all".

There are so many expressions that we - Dutch people - also keep on finding more examples in our language. A year ago I learned this one from an older lady: Van achter lyceum, van voren jubileum. Exact translation: The back is high school, the front is anniversary. Meaning: You see a woman from behind, clothed like a young woman (and maybe beautiful long hair) but when you see the front you startle because it is a very old wrinkly lady.

A very nice Dutch expression is: de kogel is eindelijk door de kerk! (litt: the bullet is through the church at last) It means that after long dithering a decision has been made at last mostly in favor of the proposal giving green-light for action. One theory says this expression comes from the 80-year war against the Spanish: a shot of a bullet through the chuch -- as it really has happened to the St-Bavo church in Haarlem -- was such an insult, that all retaliatory actions were allowed. Another one I like very much is: De beste stuurlui staan aan wal (litt: the best coxwains are on shore), meaning as an outsider it's easy to criticize things you don't know all details of.

"Keeping an eye in the sail" (Een oogje zeil houden). Heel wat vooral oudere uitdrukking komen uit de (zeil)scheepvaart. Tussen wal en schip vallen, bakzeil halen, alle zeilen bijzetten, de beste stuurlui staan aan wal, veel tegenwind krijgen, overstag gaan, aan lagerwal raken of aan de grond zitten, iemand in het vaarwater zitten, iemand de loef afsteken, met iemand opgescheept zitten, het over een andere boeg gooien, schoon schip maken, ergens in verzeild geraken, het loopt de spuigaten uit, van wal steken, enz, enz. De lijst is lang.

You are so right. I once was in Lebanon and found six students for Dutch. I asked them why they had chosen Dutch and they said that this language had the craziest expressions and expletives. They mentioned "door de mand vallen" (fall through the wicker basket, be exposed as a fake, e.g. like Trump) and "daar kan ik geen chocola van maken" (I can't make chocolate out of it, it is incomprehensible, it does not add up). Personally, I have always wondered "why chocolate?", why not cake or stew or whatever? And the favorite of a CHicago DJ who got hooked on 'drop' and 'speculaas": "dat is andere koek" (erroneously translated as "That is a different cookie" but the reference is actually to some kind of gingerbread that used to come in different varieties, e.g. with and without rum, with and without Turkish delight (sugared fruit), and so on, meaning: that is really something else although it looks/ feels the same).

Very funny / heel erg leuk! My favourite expression is "Lieverkoekjes worden niet gebakken (in het leven)": you might want to be in a different situation but you'll have to accept what life brings you. BTW: "Met de helm (op) geboren worden" is actually when a child is born with part of the amniotic sac stuck on its head. Those children are supposed to be clairvoyant.

Wel, volgens het Pentagon, als Engelstaligen een taal moeten leren voor buitenlandse missies, blijkt Japans de moeilijkste taal te zijn. Terwijl voor Engelstaligen, Nederlands bij de gemakkelijkste talen hoort. Niet verwonderlijk, gezien Nederlands en Fries de dichtst verwante talen zijn aan het Engels. Vooral het Oud Nederduits (Oud Nederlands) en het Oud (Germaans) Engels van voor de Normandisch/Franse beïnvloeding met de vele uit het Frans afgeleide woorden, moeten erg nauw aan elkaar verwant geweest zijn. Sindsdien zijn de talen wel uit elkaar gegroeid, maar de verwantschap is er nog steeds. Terwijl wij overspoeld worden met Engels is het voor Engelstaligen niet zo vanzelfsprekend om met Nederlands geconfronteerd te worden. Wie heeft er niet als kind naar de tekenfilms gekeken van de Flintstones die Engels praatten, terwijl we als jochie moesten proberen de ondertitels in het Nederlands te lezen. We werden er van kindsbeen af in ondergedompeld. Iets wat Britten en Amerikanen niet kenden/kennen. Het blijft dus voor hen geen makkelijke klus, vooral wat de uitspraak betreft.

"That is another cook" by far is my favorite. Famous words of Dutch soccer coach Louis van Gaal when he attempted to translate the Dutch expression "Dat is andere koek" (That's different cake/biscuits). I laughed for about 6 minutes when I first saw that. Now many Dutch say that when they mean "That's on a whole different level".

Number 3 is a hidden combination. When you entered through the door and fell it could have been "Met de deur in huis vallen" (EN: falling with the door into the house) which is often used as a conversation starter when you need to make something clear right at the beginning. And then afterwards it became "Met je neus in een pakje boter vallen".

This video reminded me of an ad by Eneco that was on tv a couple of years ago. It's about wind energy and in it there's a Dutch tour guide traveling with a group of tourists and he's using Dutch expressions involving the wind. But he translates the expressions very literally. So, you get: "this smells an hour in the wind." And: "this didn't deliver us wind eggs." It made me realize that we have a lot of expressions in Dutch that involve the weather.
