Dutch people are POLYAMOROUS?! // vriend and vriendin

To close off our series on definite and indefinite articles, it's necessary to talk about the various usages and meanings of the word "vriend" (male friend/boyfriend) and "vriendin" (female friend/girlfriend). The fact that the meaning of these words changes radically depending on the context, doesn't imply that the Dutch & Flemish are more whimsical when it comes to defining love and friendships, it rather means that you should know how to use the definite and indefinite articles correctly.

I was talking with group of people online and recently referred to the cousin of mijn vriend also as mijn vriend (face palm). Needless to say there were a few laughs. Thankfully they all know I’m a beginner student of the language and told me what you did, in a more confusing way. haha

Haha, good question. Vriendinnetje is sometimes used by / for children, meaning a female friend. In the Netherlands I've heard people use it as well for girlfriend. Go figure. ;-)
