We've looked at the Diemaco C7 rifles which have appeared in Ukraine before. Since then we've investigated the origins of the rifles and spoken to various sources, including one involved with the Dutch effort to ship the rifles to Ukraine. In this video we pull together an exclusive interview and examine which Ukrainian units have been issued the Dutch C7s.

Thank you. Yep they love it. They can mount optics easily, big plus for them. All the guys I've spoken to like it. Some still like AKs but like ARs for their modularity.

@@TheArmourersBench Yes modularity is much better, but what about reliability? In the USA a lot AR users fell that the DI system pressurized the receiver and keeps mud and dirt out of the action making the gun more reliable. Have the Ukrainian found this to be true in the trenchs.

Shut it man we dont even want to send these, These weapons are supposed to be protecting our country, same for our tanks, we're giving our last 17 away, and for what? We have enemies you know? Venezuala wants Curacao in the carribean, And besides, these weapons are only prolonging the war, causing more and more deaths, And more destruction than needed, if the west sent no weapons this would've all been over in just a few months, These weapons aren't winning it, thats another reason why we "The people" dont want to send these

Canada just announced a week ago that they are sending 21,000 newly manufactured C7/C8 rifles and light machine guns to Ukraine. Apparently, there is a serious shortage of light machine gun there ... lots of heavy machine guns. You'd almost think that someone should dust off their stocks of ancient Bren guns to fill the gap but the oddball.303 ammunition would cause more problems that they would solve, I guess.

Nobody really wants to sit in a bunker for 12 hours cleaning rifles. It's mostly just the reservists who get saddled with that, not the regulars. And even among the reservists it's about the least favourite thing to do, so anyone who's already making their minimum hours and doesn't need the money, typically skips cleaning duty. So you might have a cleaning day as a standalone activity, put it up for 12 guys, and only 7 guys enroll in it. To give you another task for comparison: Parachute jump training is typically over-volunteered past maximum by a factor of 3-5 and King's Day honour guard is typically over-volunteered by a factor of 5-10 (because, shiny blue parade uniforms and you get to see yourself on the telly later). EVEN boring guard duty for Geert Wilders (a racist politician with multiple convictions) for the umpteenth time someone says something nasty to him on Facebook and Wilders goes to hide in his bunker again, is more popular than cleaning. Because at least you're outside and if you're lucky the hippies hop the wrong fence looking for the detention for illegal migrants, and you get to chase hippies. Cleanup duty is the reason I quit, really. Well, that and us suddenly being saddled with some hitler-type sgt who was pulling rank on everything and just didn't get the message that we're not North Korea, we're a deeply unhierarchical laidback culture where people only ever salute officers if those are carrying something with both hands, and even within that it's the reserves where even more laidback people go. Myself I was 'recontracted' (meaning losing your rank without being formally demoted) to go from regular contract to reserve as there were simply no officer positions open let alone ones that I fit into, so having been trained to do better, I tried to give sgt Hitler some pointers on leadership style as he sounded a lot like the 'how not to lead' examples I heard at the academy. So I tried to advise sgt Hitler on his leadership style, which he instead viewed as insubordination, did even more yelling, but he lacked the balls to report me or have me charged (which given my file, good luck with that) over the difference in insights, so in the end I just quit and the 'cleaning crew' who needed the money enough that they signed up for cleaning was down by 4-5 guys in just 3 months of sgt Hitler being assigned. It did lead to the most hilarious exchange where my friend, who'd been recently selected for officer training, got jumped by sgt Hitler who then yelled at him "With that sort of attitude you won't last long here" only to be replied "You are correct, in two weeks I'm leaving to Breda to become LT". 😆 And it being impopular as a task, the lack of staff overall does the rest, really. Some quartermasters keep making a fuss until they get enough people to make the mandated maintainance, but some just shrug and accept that they're on the sh*t end of the shortages.

It’s the way it is, when weapons are obsolete, or whatever reason not used anymore, defense can decide to put them into a MOB for storage. They get a basic look over and put away to only get out at a national mobilization, or sold as surplus, or given away. When sold they don’t do a thing with it, when given away it depends on to whom and they will get a basic refreshment. With mobilization they get an overhaul, which in the end is cheaper then do maintenance over the years. A basic write of is accepted.

I was under the impression Canada had already sent a large shipment of C7 rifles to Ukraine last spring in 2022, and the CBC announced early April this year, that Canada was spending another 59 million dollars making new rifles and machine guns at Diemaco for Ukraine. Interesting bit of trivia. My father was a Weapons Technician in the CAF for 35 years (51-86). He spent years working on the Lee Enfield .303s, then the FN 7.62s, and was an instrumental part of the SARP (Small Arms Replacement Program) during the late 70s/early 80s) while they performed trials and tests to find the rifle to replace the FN, which ended up being the C7 5.56mm And in fact, they had offered my dad a posting to the job managing DIEMACO when it was first built, but he turned it down. I carried the FN for years in the early 80s, and then the C7 A1 in the early 2000s and last rifle qualification in 2019 was with the C8. Nice to see Canadian guns being used, they are top quality.

Huge fan of the A1 Vietnam version with full auto but yes these are definitely very well suited for urban combat and good out to 300 Yards with iron sights in single shot mode with 3 round burst if all still equal. Great for raw recruits, usually comes with a cleaning kit and since baptism of fire was Vietnam there are ways to weather proof beyond what is inclusive. As for the M249 SAW also breifly pictured here that is a Belgian Weapon so no problems getting feedback from that particular item and is your primary infantry assault weapon. Depending on the skill set of small unit tactics this is truly an awesome amount of *EFFECTIVE* firepower should an enemies effort be ineffective, weak or best yet non-existant. How effective these scopes are that's all new to me but in theory to an experienced user out to 500 rounds very much in play depending upon the quality of the ammo, environmental conditions etc. Great entry level service rifle. The best there is really even today as you can break the item down so easily to see how it all functions and insodoing makes parts, modify, duct tape etc. and learn from this the superiority against those who are far too trigger happy versus those who take aim and wait. Nothing wrong with the M-14 or even the M1 Garand in point of fact I'm just not knowledgeable in those systems other than the USA has millions of them...more than enough to equip all of Europe against an enemy such as Russia or should be seen as needed peacekeeping operations in East Africa.

This raises an interesting issue (or question). What is the current state of ammo supply into Ukraine? Ukraine being a former Soviet/Eastern-Bloc country, I'd expect them to have either 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 ammo, but little to no 5.56, meaning they would be entirely dependent upon Western supply. If I'm right that Ukraine's previous main cartridge was Soviet, that means that their logistics team better be on the ball or things could go very wrong very quickly. One misplaced ammo shipment could see a unit rendered completely ineffective due to having the wrong ammo for their weapons.
@TheArmourersBench
@TheArmourersBench Жыл бұрын
One of the easiest types of ammunition for Western countries to provide is small arms ammo, there's a lot of capacity to produce it in state and private factories and millions of rounds in stores so they could draw on those capabilities. As for Ukraine's logistics situation it's difficult to know for sure.

The Canadian Government in the 1980s made the smart decision to re-equip the Canadian Army with American M16s ran than spend tens of millions of Canadian dollars developing their own assault rifle. Yet the Canadian Government made another smart decision to forego the newer M16A2 because it wasn't what they truly needed. Instead, the Canadian Government and Army decided to license-manufacture the M16 in Canada. The Canadians came up with essentially an 'improved' M16A1. In hindsight the U.S. Army would have been better off with the Canadian C7 and let the U.S. Marines adopt the M16A2. The Canadian C7 employed the M16A1 architecture. The differences included attaching a M16A2 round, ribbed handguard, the A2 handgrip which had a knurled knob molded halfway down for a better grip, the longer A2 buttstock, the same thin M16A1 barrel but with a faster rifling for the NATO standard M855 round. The Canadian C7 kept the M16A1 rear sight which the U.S. Army was content, but the U.S. Marines wanted a more complex rear sight. The C7 did not have the 3-round burst but kept the full-automatic function. The C7 kept the usual handle sight and front sight. As a result the C7 was only marginally heavier than the A1 while the M16A2 was at least one-and-a-half pounds heavier and front heavy due to the thick barrel, making the A2 feel unbalanced. The U.S. Army should have used the improved M16A1 version instead of going to the A2.

In 2001 I joined the Dutch army and during my AMOL (translated; General Military Training Airmobile) we use to train with this system, not the best (still m16 flaws) but a good all-round weapon.
