The GSD wasn't a "bad dog" though because It didn't like strangers... It was protecting.. allot of Gsd/Dutch/Malinois are just naturally suspicious of strangers and only know one way to take care of the threat.. that's why they need to be trained daily for their entire lives. I've had a Malinois and a Dutch shep at the same time lol. It was definitely a learning experience !! But they both ended up being AMAZING dog's !! Just have to be willing to exercise them ALLOT daily and stay on top of training them..

I have a Dutch Shepherd, I did my homework before I got one from a breeder. My Dutch Shepherd is 6 months old. He just came back from boarding school and will continue training. I wanted a neurotic crazy dog. Lol I already spent 15 thousand dollars on him. I knew it was going to be expensive. Dutch shepherds suffer from separation anxiety. I tackle the problem asap. This dog is not for the average person unless they are willing to spend countless hours building this dog. His not lying about anything he said. The owner needs to understand that having a well-mannered Dutch Shepherd is going to cost a lot of money. They are extremely intelligent and stubborn.

I adopted a Dutch Shepherd from the euthanasia wing at the shelter that was found as a stray & went through 2 owners before me. She was a mess the first 2-3 days then I got a prong collar. 1 month in and she's a stable sweetheart that loves the subway, the dog park and chilling at home. She's now great on leash and off leash. Very obedient. Took a bit to get her dog social but she's great now. She's perfect for my first dog.

I always watch Dutch shepherd videos as rare as they are, one of the only ones I’ve heard saying bad aswell🤷🏼‍♂️I’ve had my dutchie since pup she’s 1 now as bold as you like but perfect for training and very well behaved just a very hyper dog so her walks are very long and that does her amazingly she’s calm when she comes back but even off the lead stays by your side (unless she sees a football she has a wonder) but always comes back within a few feet of leaving. nervousness has never came with her either it just seems she’s too distracted in this video because he’s not doing anything with her

Better then some of the "doodle" SDs I have seen as far as being calm and focused on task. I think Haz paints with too broad a brush.

I agree that they're not dogs for those who don't know what they're doing. That said, my male Dutch Shepherd is the best dog I've ever had. He's well behaved, not aggressive (though capable of a lot of damage). He free roams in the house. He gets a total of 2 hours of walk a day plus play time and 20 minutes of training time. Great protection dog. You really just have to know how to handle them and provide regular training, exercise and socialization.

True, family dog implies non professional handler and a dog with just a naturally friendly temperment. A dog the kids can rough with and take on walks without the worry the dog is going to jerk out of the kids hand and go bite another dog or another kid. This is basically best done with labs, retrievers, spaniels, etc. did I mention Lab? But no, there are worse, there are bigger more aggressive less trainable dogs than dutch shepherds.

I’ve only worked with one Dutch shepherd in my life and it was the worst dog ever. It was manipulative, untrustworthy, and potentially dangerous. She was a trained search and rescue dog, and actively being used in search and rescue. She lived as a pet at home and tried to kill the cat. She bit the mailman, and on the job in the field as an SAR dog, she began to bite people in the butt randomly for no reason. Needless to say after many tears the lady that owned her rehomed her. The lady adopted a beautiful German Shepherd that She certified as a therapy dog and a crisis relief dog. She’s very happy now. The sheriffs department here has one Dutch shepherd in service. I have watched him work, he’s a force to be reckoned with, and he would kill anybody if he got the chance. This video is a welcome video thank you for telling the truth about this breed.

Sorry to hear the quality of dogs of this breed seems to be so poor over there, at least in Ontario as you mentioned. From all what I know here, living close to the Dutch border, the common ground is more the other way round, with Dutchies generally considered to be the „easier“ breed compared with the Malinois. Of course all depends on chosing the right blood line and a responsible breeder. There are also a lot of so called X-Herders and X-Malinois which are crosses of mostly Dutchie/Malinois sometimes GSD or just don‘t have an official pedigree of a kennel club associated with the FCI. Such dogs have been bred to work and not for confirmation. Nowadays many of them are produced by people who don‘t know what they do, unfortunately. Many of them seem to be that what you just described: bad. You‘ll find these X-Herders offered on online marketplaces a lot, rarely the purebred ones … So from all what I know you want to look for a FCI breeder or reputable X-Herder breeder and the right blood lines and you can get wonderful dog just like a good GSD or Malinois.

We have a 1.5 year old Dutch Shepherd (male) and this is our first dog. before we got him we researched for 1.5 years what kind of dog we wanted. when we finally agreed on the dutch shepherd, we had to find the right kennel. dutchies are work dogs. but because we want a family dog, and are taking a dog into our home for the first time, we thought it was wise to choose a calming non-working Dutch Shepherd. that's why we went for the brave brindles. we had to wait more than 1 year for a litter (we were lucky). and it's true, taking in a Dutch Shepherd is a lot of work. we do detective work with him, train every day, exercise a lot, play. but I can now say that we are seeing the results! indoors he is calm (on and off switch) outside in the garden too. there's only one thing we really got wrong with him‌, we've heard from everyone that we had to get a lot of experience with him to make him a well-balanced dog... as a result he likes everything too much dogs, people actually anything that moves he wants to play or cuddle with. it's much better now after a lot of training, but that was certainly not what we thought before we got him 😂. Edit: i'm a 16 year old from the Netherlands so sorry for my English

There are MANY reputable breeders, even down to the hobbyist level, producing phenomenally bred DS. While correct they should not be marketed as family dogs, a well bred DS can easily live as a member of the family while maintaining it's working qualities.

He has never bitten down on me intentionally, but has drawn blood a few times while playing tug-a war or grabbing a bite target. In each case, I stopped play, and showed him my hand; which got the response of him licking my hand and showing subservience.

He circles left/ right, lays half(bum in air) lays full, stand still command...teeth command for full bark-what command for single bark. He waits for command to eat and lots of other things...walks off lead like a show dog looking at me, but REFUSES to walk on the lead, little bastard!!😂😂🤣 A good dutch is a thing to behold!! If its crossed its immediately not a Dutchie. Not relevant to the assessment of the Dutchie's temperament. Try a purebred and realize and how unruly they are. I've seen Dutch Sheperds from self-proclaimed top protection trainers from California jump the gun several times and bite way before the handler gave the command. The threshold for aggression is so low.

@@davidsmith-hj9ip so because my dog has a malinois father and a Dutch shepherd mother that makes it a mutt? I would think it's very difficult if not impossible to find a Dutch with zero malinois blood. Also the mother of my dog is a "pure" Dutch. BRN registered. I can look at the bloodline going back to the early 1900s. And she was the calm one.

@@iTzMarky Let me frame it a different way that I think will help. I love Dobermans, but the breed is notorious for DCM and nerve issues (can't handle pressure). If I crossed a Doberman with a Malinois and got nerve free dogs and no DCM in the entire litter, I wouldn't argue that people calling the Doberman sick and are to be avoided are wrong. Rather, I'd recognize that what I have is not a Doberman (its a mix), and if its good (as u say ur dog is) then I would say I want more of the mix and none of the purebred. Even though I'd lose the prestige of saying my dog is a "Doberman", what I get is a much better dog even if I lose the AKC or CKC purebred pedigree to hang on the wall. Every breed is a "mutt" until kennels start recognizing it, and if Dutchies need to be outcrossed with Mals or whatever else to address temperament complaints thats fine.

Got to say, you are right about dutch shepherds not being for inexperienced owners. Had large breed dogs my entire life and had the chance to get e Dutch from a breeder...the most aggressive one in the litter is who I have. Took a year of constant multiple dogs, people, situations, children and range socializing, and, at least four hours or more a day... EVERYDAY, to be able to trust him. His hackle goes up instantly if he even thinks something is amiss or could go wrong, even though he is the sweetest, most loving and attentive breed I've ever had the honor to companion with. He's 14 months old, 92lbs of pure sinew and electrically charged sculpted muscle with I adore you eyes. A true 1/50th of 1% of dog owners will thrive with breed. I'm almost 70 and it was between a Boerboel from Elite Boerboels, or my Dutch. I made the right choice. I likewise, warn others away from the breed when they say how beautiful he is, and they want one. They only see the cumulative work thats been put into him, not the daily routines.

Adams right, if you've got a KNPV Mali it's most likely got Dutch somewhere in his lines. They'll literally breed Dutchie/Mal X and the pups that look like Dutchies are sold as Dutchies and the pups that look like Malinois are sold as Malinois. The Dutch don't give a shit what they mix in as long as it produces dogs with a ton of drive.

My Dutch is through the BRN route however he is imported from a guy I know in Holland and he actively does not mix Mali in, this is where you might be confused as BRN is open for interpretation, they do put anything in there and call it what it mostly looks like, unless you know the breeder who you've seen breed for years, so there is defo pure Mali out there, and defo dogs that are more dutch. He's extremely intelligent and wants to be close with all of our family members. We don't allow him to run with other dogs in a dog park as he wants to dominate them and this can lead to a dog fight. I agree they are not a good dog for beginners or people who want a family pet. I have a Dutch Shepard that we got as a rescue (she had previously been given up by a family who couldn’t afford a big dog anymore) and she does have some of the issues you describe - super intense prey drive and easily nervous. Luckily she also has a lot of good qualities - she’s not handler aggressive at all, she was very easy to housetrain, never takes food/chews objects that aren’t explicitly given to her, doesn’t have separation anxiety at all, and she’s sooo athletic and fast and agile it’s awesome to take her out places and run around and climb with her. She’s not the first ‘challenging’ dog I’ve had (I had a rescue ex-racing greyhound) and she does require a lot of work, training and money, but she’s a fantastic dog, I love her. There’s no such thing as a bad breed, just different suitabilities for different situations.

Cohos are more of a catch dog than a protective dog. Like a Pit Bull. Get a GSD. From a reputable breeder. Not a random bred one. That’s my advice and I’ve worked professionally for 40 plus years in the dog world. With many breeds. As a groomer, vet assistant, dog handler, breeder etc. Do not buy a Mal or Dutchy unless you actually have a real full time job for one and hours a day to exercise and train one. If you like Dogos but want more protection traits , get a Cane Corso instead. Again from a reputable breeder.

I can vouch for what was said in this great vid. I owned a Dutch Shepherd for 14 years. He was sold by the local pound as German Shepherd X Bully (still got the papers). He became more alpha the older he got, even though he was neutered. Full of drive and energy and I couldn’t wait for him to get out of the puppy stage, which took around 8 years. Would hunt anything from mice to snakes to kangaroos, not to mention neighbours pets that came through the fence. Got bitten by a snake or something that slowed him down for around a year, but then back to it! He was great with people and children (children aren’t people) though. Definitely had a fear reaction type thing going on though. He could be timid and unsure of some things or bluff, scare and be bold in other situations.

Not sure why my post gets deleted by KZbin maybe because of video I posted with our Knpv Dutch shepherd doing good with our baby and kids. Regardless I agree with Haz definitely not for everyone ( specially the strong/real ones). I must ad though the right Dutch shepherd, with the right family , and giving the dutchie the right job it is possible to be in a family. We have a very strong bloodlined Knpv holland imported Dutch shepherd that will work like no other in protection but will cuddle with our 9 month baby. We imprinted this puppy at a young age for all of this. God bless you and your business Haz.

I blame breeders for selling dogs like this to the general public. Don’t Malinois and serious working line GSD Rottweiler etc. Same thing. Don’t. Not suitable as family pets unless the owners are serious dog enthusiasts and understand drives and temperament of working breeds. Pit Bulls too. Good ones are going to be animal aggressive. Bad ones unstable and possibly human aggression. Most people should own goldens labs setters spaniels or at most border collies. Why dog trainers are making a fortune these days. Trying to fix problems that should never have happened if people stayed in their lane. Stop breeding working dogs if you don’t know what you’re doing Stop selling them to pet homes. Dogs and children pay the price.

I agree that these dogs are not for everyone, they require a lot of work. With that said, I’ve yet to have a bad experience with a Dutchie. I was raised with one, he was very tolerant of little child me running around the house with him at the end of a leash. He came from a very good breeder who knew his lines very well. All the other Dutch shepherds I’ve seen and met have been similar to Ike (maybe because most were from the same breeder). It’s a breed that will remain near and dear to my heart.

I know someone who adopted a Dutchie from a shelter. Absolute zero human aggression, he only bites people when trying to eat treats off of their hands, his approach to kids is "tolerate or flee". Despite this, the household had one hell of a learning curve ahead of them, not to mention other peoples' vet bills, and one of his daughters got certified as a professional trainer to get him under control. He's sweet, loving and devoted to his master, but he's just not cut out for the city pet life. Unfortunately he's neutered, so there's no way to pass the tolerance of humans into those who actively breed these dogs.

Luck was on our side with our recent adoption of a 4yr old Dutch shepherd. She was a surrender to the local humane society by an elderly couple that couldn't care for her any longer. She went in and out of the shelter a few times with potential owners only to get returned several times - heartbreaking. My wife and I are avid and devoted pet owners - owning two shepweilers already. We brought both our shepweilers to the humane society and introduced them to the dutchie through the fenced compounds, then together in one yard - they got along right away. Pleased to say she's been an incredible addition to the family, a great companion...loves playing with the other two dogs in the yard. A little mischievious with stealing items around the house, but that's a work in progress. She's completely non-aggressive and very affectionate.

my first dog is an fci dutch shepherd, half van le dobry lines and the other half mixed from german and austrian lines (some pegge and other knpv blood from much generations before).. now he is 2 years old and i have to say this is the best dog for me i can imagine!! But i didnt buy the dog because i thought "oh, it looks so nice with the stripes" or something... i had the goal to be an doghandler for security service and had much experience with other dog breeds, like dobermann, rottweiler, american bullies etc. which i took care of, when their owners had no time for them. And we went to a mondioring club with experienced trainers from day one, when i got him as a puppy. ...you are right if you say that dog is not for most of the people, i would not give this dog to a anyone of my friends or family if i had no time or something, the risk that something bad would happen is much to high😂😂 And yes there was one time were he bit me in the ass for real (because i blocked him from beating up another dog😂😂...), which was really painfull. This happened when he was about 1 year old...but i think i "answered" this bite right, because it never happened again^^ It took a lot of work, but how i said, now it is the best dog for me, i could imagine!!! I've owned my Dutch for 9 years now& can agree on some aspects you bring up about the breed. HYPER, OCD, high prey drive & handler reactive for sure. & If you don't like dog hair don't buy this dog. I'm lucky mine is sound for a Dutch and loyal to a fault. IMO: Shit breeders & ignorant purchases are the reason for "nerve bag" dogs & the reason both Mals & Dutch get a shit reputation. That being said; this has been one, if not the best dog I've ever owned. Maybe I'm a lucky owner, but have had positive interaction with 3 other D.S.D.'s. ,but all owned by competent handlers. I'm not sure if I'd put any faith in sex of a dog being a better choice when your talking about shitty genetics in a dog already? This video could really apply to any popular breed, except when you own a potential land shark the legalities & outcomes are a lot more serious.

Ahhh I've always wondered why you never make videos with dutch shepherds, but have plenty with GSD's and Malinois. I've only ever seen 2 dutchies in real life, and that was back in my dog park days. Both dogs were extremely unstable and would freak out and bite every dog that got near them. Had no idea the unstable nervs was a common thing, you would think that people would stop breeding dogs that bit them but we live in a time when common sense seems to be a scarcity.

That's so odd to me. Mine won't waste her breath on a dog or human unless they get too close. She is too smart for that. 7 or 8 dogs came up to our fenced in yard the other day and she just stares at them and doesn't bark. If they entered they would die but she knows she can't get to them so why bark. The only thing she is scared of is rain/thunder. She is friendly with medium to large dogs but wants to kill squirrels, cats, and lizards. Great with the kids.

my knpv dutchie 14 months old. great with kids loves all my friends and people in the neighborhood. now he wants to be an alpha and we had to change his place in the family hierarchy. Very easy to train , climbs, jumps , bites etc…although some things he just doesn’t want to do and it takes longer to train. I have noticed that once he gets his training sessions a day where he willing to do anything and he enjoys it too he becomes a “ pet dog”😁. but if he doesn’t get the stimulus and some human interaction he will destroy the garden. I used to take him to don’t beach here in Australia against the advice of our professional trainer, but he never ever got into fight he never ever was once agressive to other dogs actually totally the opposite. at home within the fence in the backyard he’s territorial and cathes everything ( but isn’t that we all want in these dogs? I do) . and I have seen and heard about many aggressive gsd in the past biting kids . Agree that the breed is not for anyone but if you know how to handle it it is the best dog you can ever had . tough, loyal and I have to disagree with video about this dog running away, my one has never ever goes away not even from the open front yard. I guess I have good one but NOT without challenges but hey it’s like bringing up children 🤣🤣🤣

Super athletic dog and we take her on backpacking trips. I have put a lot of work into her to get her to be stranger neutral. Currently training her to hunt for sheds for this upcoming shed season. She is extremely loyal and affectionate. Probably the cuddliest dog I have ever met. But I would 100% agree. These dogs have the capacity to get really nasty if you do not stay on top of them.

The Dutch Shepherds actually tend to be more stable with a better off switch then the Malinois on average. With Malinois you often end up with backyard bred nerve bags if you don't do your due diligence. Dutch Shepherd is a fairly rare breed and are mostly bred from working lines for function. Not they're not as popular family pets as GSD or even Malinois so not as messed up yet. Especially GSD is messed up and a lot of genetical problems as a breed due to dog show line family pet form over function breeders. Dutch Shepherd is one of the healthier breeds in general assuming it's bred responsibly. But these shepherds are all supposed to be allround herding farm dogs so placing them outside of such a predictable spacial working environment without proper experience on the specific breed and needs will always raise the risk for problems and a working dog becoming a liability especially if it's a specimen of unethical/questionable breeding stock.

I thought I was ready for a dutchy bc I had trained many guard/protection breeds. I would never recommend dutchys for families. Dutchys are truly working breeds that should only go to very experienced trainers. Even than it is much better to go with other breeds bc of all the potential issues you can suffer. It is easy to get into problem with neighbors, delivery people, etc. My dog was super good with other dogs, other than being a rough player. With people, she was ready to protect and bite, but too much ready. She was a walking lawsuit potential.

It's been really hard to get her to be a relatively normal dog and I've accepted the fact that she will probably never be the type of dog I was expecting when I got her. fortunately, she's a sweet girl and not aggressive towards family or pets in the house. she is very tolerant of my Frenchie who has a napoleon complex. so on the positive end, I can say that the company did some good work on socializing the dog.

My Dutch Shepherd Rolf is an awesome family dog for my family, but maybe not for yours. Owning one of the great animals takes a high level of commitment, like raising a baby human. My wife and I met him when he was 2 weeks old and took him home at 30 days old, still needing to be on formula for 2 weeks before another few weeks of weening. I spent 3 weeks sleeping on the couch before I could begin crate training. He was paper trained and understood his name by 8 weeks. By 16 weeks, he knew how to tell me he needed to go outside. Now at almost 2 years, Rolf sleeps in his kennel every night with the door closed but not locked. Like a child with ADHD, he needs his routine, love and attention, which means getting up early every day and walking outside with him. He greets my wife with a happy dance and a serenade every morning before sitting at her feet and keeping everyone away for about 30 minutes. It means training, exercise and social contact with the family for hours every day. It means not being left alone in the house all day. It means him having a safe space outside and a kennel inside the house where he can go and be left alone. Rolf considers himself my wife's dog, which male Dutchies will tend to do. He is like an extension of her will and can be jealous for her attention. He is always alert and protective, highly intelligent and high strung, plays rough with male adults, but also incredibly gentle with women and children. He has a very strong will and a distinct character with likes and dislikes and he will let you know his opinion through body language and vocalizations. Like a human child, these dogs can be very dangerous if they are raised wrong, but incredible when raised right. Rolf weighs 115 pounds (52Kg) with large paws and strong muscles. I give him buffalo and cow bones to chew on and crush.

I got me a Sable German Shepherd and she's been awesome thus far, if this is true I'm glad I got a German Shepherd. She's a working line Shepherd, very smart, high pretty drive, very sweet n' social, but is highly reactive to bite training. She only cost me $500 & didn't come from breeders, rather a family who's pure breeds produced puppies the owners weren't ready to care for, so they sold me one of nine, then a few more and kept the rest. My dog Megan is awesome. She's only 7 months now and already is protective of our home ECT. Again, I'm blessed to have found her. She is high energy, and as a working line she behaves better ECT after some fun training/exercise. Granted she gets moody when not active, but she understands I'm daddy. You said get a shepherd, I'd agree. Less law suit possibilities, better control, just amazing dogs. But I also believe in no bad dogs. Even a Dutchy can be a good dog, it may just take more effort. Still beautiful though.
