hi Haz always impressed here little note: when I tell children, how to come in contact to dogs, I tell them to make a fist (very polite for a dog: the opposite to cats claws) and slowly show the fist to the dogs nose, let him sniff if he reacts with growl, he says: don’t touch and then child can take fist slowly away (and accept dogs decision) so please tell your clients make child - dog meetings safe

Excellent advice! I have a deaf Catahoula and often have people reach out about training "issues". They go into what the dog is doing and it's usually just Cata-hooligan stuff and nothing to do with the dog being deaf. Had they researched the breed they would maybe have understood that. Sometimes when getting a dog you have to set aside your compassion and insert some long term logic.

I'm not interested in working dogs generally or in GSD specifically but I enjoy watching your channel because if vids like this one. Breed *matters*. Personality *matters*. Training *matters*. Far too many folks choose dogs because they're "pretty" or "tough" or "cool looking" instead of choosing for breed qualities, ability to perform tasks, personality, lifestyle fit, and health.

I live in Ireland so we only have a handful of decent dog handlers in this area. I work with dogs myself & trying to find out more on dog protection education is near impossible. In this video alone, Haz has explained in great detail the fundamentals of dog psychology when choosing an elite breed. I've studied dog psychology but never was this explained, so thank you Haz. Favorite trainer online, thank you for your honest content. I’d love to see some more work with Doberman’s just bc they’re an interesting breed being bred specifically as a personal protection dog that was meant to see new ppl all the time but bred to assess the threat you’d think, correct? Reason being, if Mr. Doberman didn’t feel like his dog was protective and also social enough to go door to door he would’ve kept breeding, right? Either way, great work.

Very informative! Seems like the puppy's you train/place will end up at the right place. Living in Belgium myself, there are lots of Malinois and GSD in dog shelters because of malicious breeders who are just in it for the money. They don't socialize their pups and don't look at their character before selling them. And on the other hand, some people/families should do some more research before buying a dog. I have 1 friend who used to breed grate Danes and 1 friend who breeds GSD working lines. Both are very careful in selecting new owners en keep contact with all the owners they ever sold a dog to (even the GSD who ended up in Russia, Singapore and Canada). When my family was looking for our 1st dog, they both adviced us NOT to take a grate Dane or GSD working line as a 1st dog, specially with small children. After lots of research and a selection procedure by the breeder, we ended up buying a Bracco Italiano ... which turned out to be a perfect match for our family.

So I noticed that when you told Izzy to platz you gave her a finger snap/pointed down to her bed. I do this with my two dogs and they seem to respond very well to it. Great video, thank you. I truly hope this video is seen as much as possible worldwide. I just have a note on the breed: from personal experience mix dogs can be trained for personal defence if they present the proper traits. For example my dog is a mix of several shepherds, hunts and street dogs and was a natural - very low on sociability (only family members), high on defence and prey, very high on drive (impossible to stop her once she had started). She would launch at any stranger even remotely a treat to me in her mind, ever since she was a puppy. Biting given the opportunity. Anything young or injured was a prey …even a leaf …Now I found her as she had been abandoned and she was my first dog. I went to a trainer for help as I had major difficulties. She was very obedient with me and the sweetest at home but in the neighbour she was known as “the black terror”. Whereas one trainer thought that training her on defence would have gave her some boundaries …the owner of the place didn’t want to go with it as she was not pure breed. No one could help…I ended up to a wolf trainer/handler who took pity on me and maybe was moved by the loved we had for one another and decided to help me. Teaching me how to be a true leader. I was 18 and I grew up 10 years in few months thanks to him. She become way more manageable and today, my dog is almost 16 and the sweetest ever. Telling you all this story just to consider this when asked to train a dog for defence…it might not be for sport but to keep two friends together.

Can you do a vid on your opinion on the working ability of Rottweilers? I’d love to hear your opinion and I think it’d make a great video as well
@1packatak
@1packatak 2 жыл бұрын
Define “working ability of Rottweilers”. Are you talking IGP? Protection work? Do you want a dog who can work AKC/CKC competition obedience? Or Agility? Are you looking for a service Rottweiler (my friend has had several because she has visual issues and seizures after a car accident)? Do you want a farm dog (herding, carting, etc)? There are many types of working Rotts. Research your list of breeders. And verify the information, as Haz said. Make sure required health clearances have been done on breeding stock. Know that form follows function and function follows form. Know the breed standard. The correct shoulder, the correct height, the right rear angulation is all necessary to be able to function in the sport world. Also, as Haz said, do not shy away from an experienced breeder who picks the puppy for you. Mine did. She and her husband had been breeding and showing and competing for nearly 30 yrs. She picked the litter then the puppy based on my goals. And was 100% right both times.

Great video I’d appreciate if you elaborate on drive threshold vs. drive level and on the difficult dogs that you mentioned. I work with a German/Swiss shepherd dog that is medium-low on social, very low on defense threshold but I couldn’t figure out her drive. Having seen this material I’m thinking that she has medium prey threshold but but high drive. Obviously she causes a lot of problems. The animal psychologist who was supposed to help told the owners that she should be trained as herding dog but I call this BS. A herding dog must push herself between the wall and sheep and this one is scared of flock of pigeons. I think that at the mere sight of sheep she would urinate and run away. Also, once her drive sets off she is out of control, no obedience whatsoever. A true shepherd must be very obedient. What I see in this dog is that she self-imposed the role of a guard dog and protective dog and she is overburdened by this due to lack of training. I think that she could do well as a guard dog with proper training but not as well as protective dog (lack of discipline again). I try to teach her that human makes choices what is danger and what is not and her focus is to assist and obey owner not to take over. I’d appreciate any your thoughts on this subject.

Some breeders need to be willing to say "No!" to money, even if it is a big pile of money. Several years ago but within the dog's lifetime, a friend decided to get a dog for his wife and himself. His decision was based entirely on a magic detective in a book series he liked having one. If that is enough to clue you in on the breed you can guess how this failed. A few of us pointed out that that is a very expensive and rare breed and not EVER for first time dog owners. Most certainly not for lazy dog owners either and one of the worst choices for lazy first time dog owners. Add in he liked to host parties where a pile of strangers will flood the house.. Sure a Bully Kutta, honey badger, or rabid crocodile would have been worse but when that is your competition.. Well the dog received no training and was allowed to do whatever it wanted. I know that on more than one occasion I showed up for a party and said "Ah the dog has forgotten who I am and is going to get his bite on." This lead to the usual snapping hand out of lunging mouth and onto dog's head so I controlled it, while I talked to the dog for the few seconds it took for his brain to go "Sorry bro, I do know you." and go back to laying down. People who didn't know dogs ended up bleeding on several different occasions. After city employees ended up on that list 2x the dog was going to be destroyed. Sometime the dog barked lazily, sometime it just walked up calmly/lazily and then bit, so it was not good "first aggressive dog encounter" for people who were not familiar with dogs. Luckily someone familiar with the breed and living outside town, said they would take the dog and get it behaving and that the owners could visit it in 6 months, thus saving the dog from destruction. Well the old owners were up to visit the very next weekend and undo a week's training. The new owner explained that and took out a restraining order against them (or threatened to). They haven't seen the dog since and I'm guessing it is now living a better and well behaved life. Maybe it is now living in a Buddhist temple and making all the monks happy (they sure loved that dog). All in all the whole thing could have been avoided if the breeder said "This will be your first dog, ever? HAHAHAHAHAHA. No!" and been done with it.

@JordanK1010
@JordanK1010 2 жыл бұрын
You have to wait for the dog to mature, generally somewhere between 1.5-2 years old you will see this come out. Right now your dog is a big puppy & I would expect high sociability, just allow him to mature in to what he will be.
@dunjak111
@dunjak111 2 жыл бұрын
The first two month in the life of a dog are the most important. In that time, memories and experiences are saved in the cerebral cortex, of a dogs brain. So, that is the only time, when they can learn primal trust towards humans. After that time, you can try to overlap bad experiences (like mistreatment), but dogs can not learn that primal trust, anymore. Here in Germany dogs get tested, when they are 2-5 days old and again, after about 2 month. At that early age, it is already decided, wether a dog may become a guard, rescue, search, or social (e.g. for the blind) dog. From then on, its just training. Training starts as soon as they open their eyes and ends, when they close their eyes, forever. But that goes for every dog, I guess. So, if you want your GSD to become a highly social dog, you should obviously train those situations as often, as possible. The more you train, the more secure your dog will get, in social situations. In Germany, working social dogs may get insecure, if they get blind, old and lame, or make too many bad experiences. Otherwise, there is no stopping. At the age of 9 month, your dog could already be in puberty. In puberty, dogs may behave very differently, from what you are used to.

Some dog breeders will pick the dog out for you bases upon your circumstances, and you have no choice.....at first i thought this was odd, but then I realized that the breeder knows the pups the best and which one will fit. Other breeders will let you pick out the pup, and I really dont think that is a good idea

Me: If you want to pick the best dog for your family, don't get a GSD 🙃😂. Super high drive. No nonsense. Demanding in training. That's not a great family dog. That's a dog you have to turn into a great family dog. "I want a lower dri..." then don't get a GSD. Who wants a Lamborghini with a 4cyl Honda Civic engine in it?

Mine is not high drive but I made sure I researched her breeder’s dogs and asked a lot of questions (annoyingly for WEEKS)before I even put a deposit down. I wanted one that was alert but not a total a**hole,active enough but good with a couple of walks a day, and quick training! She’s the best dog for our family! Learns simple obedience within minutes! She’s alert to strangers but takes direction and knows when it’s safe ignore them.Tries to chase animals but quick to correct! You just have to have the confidence and patience to train and they’re golden!!!

Exactly! My pup is just 3 months and is a total focus hog. There is no way I could give thoughts to anything else when she is out of her crate!! Having succes with lots of structure and excersize and training, though

@@msclark7583 yes! We never took our eyes off of her when out of the crate when we brought her home. She gets walks 2-3 times a day and lots of ball fetching everyday! She’s 5 months old content just to lay and chew on her bully stick all day after she’s been exercised. It’s nice to finally be out of the Gator face stage and she sleeps in our bedroom all night now instead of the crate!

@@Figjimmy11 How nice to know there's a light at the end of the tunnel! She is a good girl, just gets those puppy zoomies and wants to play tug with anything that fits in her mouth! I've found that she likes ice cubes, though. I put them on the hardwood floor and she chases them around like a hockey player! 😂 A good time wasting excersize for her when it is WAY too hot out! (100+ these past few days)

@@msclark7583 Yes! We can’t keep enough ice cubes in our maker for the humans to use! It’s like a sin if we walk past the fridge and we don’t throw a couple of cubes at her!! Lol!
