Without the Dutch Republic there would not be an American Republic. The founding Farthers took the Dutch Republic as example.

First of all, I know this movie is made to make you feel proud (a little nationalistic.) I feel, that as a Dutch person, you aren't really programmed to be very proud of being Dutch . But once in a while it's good to see (although not 100% historical accurate) the way the Dutch values are being discussed and formed AND make you feel proud to be living in The Netherlands. Edit: thank you for showing me this :)

“Admiral” ( Michiel de Ruyter) is a great movie to watch! I think the story of the de Witt brothers is truly fascinating and you get to see a little piece of that story in this movie, including the gruesome murder…

The American constitution is in part based on the Dutch one. One of the writers of the American version spent time in the Netherlands in the years before he wrote it. The Netherlands were the most tolerant back then and served as inspiration for the American independence movement. There has always been a strong connection between the US and the Netherlands as New York was New Amsterdam, which is where American tolerance started. As well as their trade. An Charles Gehring is translating 12.000 pages of documents from the New Amsterdam government and wrote a book about it with a journalist, Russel Shorto. There's a great TedTalk by Gehring on his work, unfortunately I can't find his hour long, indepth presentation. I'll add it if I do. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eorbo6pvbtqMm5I Here's the hour long talk from Russel Shorto on his work: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYuld399apqeb7c Van Buren was a Dutch descendant and was from Oud Kinderhook, which was abbreviated to O.K. and the local party that was founded was called The Democratic O.K. Club. The use of OK as meaning good comes from his successful campaign. Roosevelt was also of Dutch descent.

I am Dutch and I honestly never cared about any kind of Dutch films, of shows.. And honestly, at school we barely learn anything about Michiel de Ruyter, or the VoC in general.. whilst it is such a massive part of our history.. Strange. So yes, I of course heard of Michiel de Ruyter, but never seen the film, unill recently; purely because someone from the otherside of the world brought up the story and such and I knew jack shit about it. Dutch people are rarely ever proud of their country and history and such.. Because nationalism is seen as a bad thing here, but well. Whenever I see people from abroad talk about our history, our traditions, our culture; it does make me proud. Thanks for sharing!

One thing to note about historical accuracy is that the people of the dutch republic didn't view themselves as a country, they had much more of a bond to their individual states.

In 1672 (our horrible year) he was lynched with his brother on behalf of the Oranjes. They got eaten (partly) by the mob. The declaration of Independence is from 1581, and the US decaration is based on it.

The movie is definitely worth checking out. I believe this speech to be fiction, but the movie itself tries to portray a fair account of history, of a very important formative period of my small nation. It tries to tell several decades of history in a few hours.

To answer your question: this is round about 0% historically accurate. The notion of "we the Dutch, one country" wouldn't come along for another 300 years. And the motivations De Witt assigns to king Charles here were actually the motivations of Louis XVI of France, who invaded five years later -- and almost succeeded in conquering and ending the republic, due to the mismanagement of the Dutch armed forces by De Witt.

i love this speech, but you can even take it broader. Unity is what we all need. And Unity hits us all. Our Country? pfff.. our WORLD! This blood or that blood? HUMAN blood. But people in power don't like to share, they like to divide, keep us down, keep us small, separated. De Wit didn't think in Prince minded or Republic minded but in country minded. We will sadly never learn to think in world minded. Only in the Kingdom of God. Face it... no matter how much you want it, borders will ever be here. One man will rule over another to his disadvantage... just like the Bible says. Mankind isn't made to rule... we are made to serve.
