As a Dutchie I still feel a little bit of pride whenever I see something like this. My tiny tiny country that has been able to punch well above its weight for so long. Stubbornly defending our country against the sea for centuries, even though it's partly below sea level. Insane to imagine that for a short amount of time it was able to take on the world powers. Though it didn't last (it couldn't have) it makes me proud to be a Nederlander today. We still manage to put together a pretty nice little prosperous country, even though no one knows anything about us outside of drugs and prostitution 🤣

It is true that a lot of this speech applies to the United States. That's not so crazy of course. Even the American Declaration of Independence is (most likely) based on the Dutch version from the 16th century (Akte van Verlatinghe). What was said here in this speech can also be found in the founding of New Amsterdam, later New York. New Amsterdam was a free port in which many Dutch ideals were well expressed. And still both Amsterdam and New York are melting pots of cultures. Also take a look at the New York flag. There are many Dutch things on it.
@DenUitvreter

Yes, but at the time of this speech they were already pretty hypocrite because this is at least two decades after they started taking part in the Atlantic slave trade. There were free (land owning) blacks in and around New Amsterdam but slaves on captured enemy's ships weren't set free anymore unless they arrived on the Dutch Republic's soil itself. Relations with the native Indians weren't as good anymore as they had been, mostly down to the mismanagement of Kieft and a few Dutch fighting alongside befriended natives in a tribal conflict, but it had gotten very messy anyway. So these ideals had become relative and local, the merchant vs preacher man as the hypocrisy is still named when it comes for foreing policy had already devlopped.

As a Dutchman I'm late to the party, but I'm happy to see this getting some foreign attention. I'm patriotic about the good, impressive, admirable and extraordinary things about my country in its past, present and culture. I acknowledge the darker parts of our history and our present flaws but it does not stop me from being proud of everything else. In fact, as a history student I admit that I'm mostly focused on our national history, primarily our medieval and early modern history.

@@baskoning9896 well true there were a few that took a bite. Het land was reddeloos, de regering radeloos, het volk redeloos. The country was about to be overrun by the French, at sea our navy was outnumbered 2 to 1 as the English and French teamed up to destroy the country. Then one man "Michiel de Ruyter" defeated them 3 times in a few months. The prince of orange flooded the country stopping the French. So with just a sliver of Dutch soil remaning free, they turned it around and won the war.

Great video man, loved your commentary and I think your absolutely right ❤ (Sadly) Sometimes all it takes is an event to get people back together. And I think the Dutch and US are similair in various ways. Especially if look at our compared historys. Fighting back against a greater power to obtain/keep our freedom. Also the progressiveness, the Dutch and US were two of the earliest countries to adopt a Rebpublic. Lastly, back in our Golden Age, the Dutch colonized a few parts of the eastern cost of the US. And even though we sold the land to the English, a lot of settlers and ideas stayed there and influenced the future nation of the US. A few fun fact about the movie this speech was from (Michiel de Ruyter). Women played such big roles in the Netherlands. Even though it wasnt in the speech, it was a big theme for the rest of the movie. The wife of the main character, Michiel De Ruyter, helped him with everything, kind of like his assistent. Women were becomming more and more independent and important. They where even invited to important meetings about the country. For example the wife of Johan de Witt advised him to include Michiels wife in a meeting where they would talk about the future of the Netherlands. With the men talking in the importance of the country as a whole and the wifes/women talking about the importance of the (Dutch) individual. Johans wife was even able to convince Michiel that the only way to save our nation was to become a general, and so he did. He lead the Dutch navy to a number of important naval victories against the English Spanish and French that made us keep our freedom. (From a proud Dutchman btw) ❤😁

The dutch hero Michiel de Ruyter is like the Napoleon Bonaparte of the Netherlands who is most likely the best admiral in the world ever. William the silent is also like a dutch Napoleon Bonaparte, he is the forefather of the Dutch people. He was extremly intelligent he only spoke when it was needed, he was a adviser in Habsburg council and he was a general that have fought in many wars. He didnt like the prosecution of his fellow dutch protestanian country man so he took the lead in the revolution against the Habsburg/Spanish and so the 80 years war for the Dutch independence against Spain started. With all his experience as a general in wars and all his knowledge of the Habsburg/Spain empire he was able to make the dutch independent.

I don't believe it's right to translate the 'Staatsgezinden' with Republicans, vs the Orangists. I believe the Orangists were Republicans too. It was just not the republicanism of 2 centuries later which got rid of all heriditary titles. The Dutch Republic was kind of hybrid with commoners dominating the legislative branch and the nobility important in the executive branche. The Orangists wanted a Stadtholder back, and one of the Orange family tree. But that was not a heriditary position either, the Stadtholder had to be elected by the different 'States' of each province, and therefore by commoners. The wish for a Stadtholder had more to do with a stronger united Dutch Republic, less power for Holland, more army to defend the dry parts instead of mostly a navy which protected Holland well enough together with the waterline. Upward social mobility was already accepted and one of the pillars of the success of the Dutch Republic. Not just the merchants making obscene amounts of money, but DeWitt, the 'pm' doing the speech was from a family of woodstackers, and the admiral the movie is about was the son of a beer carrier. The English, French and Spanish had a smaller pool of talent to pick their leaders and commanders from because they had to be nobles.

As shown in this clip back in that time the government of the Republic was divided into the staatsgezinde (who wanted to keep the power to all the states) and prinsgezinde (Who wanted the Prince to have more power). And the two groups rarely agreed on the same things. The only way they agreed was because their was this outside threat, otherwise it did not function. If I look at the US then I almost see the same thing. The government is also divided into two groups (Republicans and Democrats). So with this kind of government system it must be hard to unit without an outside threat. Ps Intresting fact Johan de Witt (The guy giving the speech) was eaten by an angry mob. 😳 🤣

One of the aspects is not a necessity: a republic. Many nations have been or still are successful under a monarch. Including the Netherlands and the nation of the maker of the video (English?). Although to make sure the people benefit, you need an elected parliament / congress and a constitution. Like in the UK and Netherlands.
@dutchman7623
@dutchman7623 2 жыл бұрын
The UK doesn't have a constitution. The House of Lords isn't a democratic elected house. The Netherlands were a Kingdom from 1815 to 1848, than the monarch had to give up all his powers, and we became a republic again in all but name. I can explain how bad of a kingdom we were, during that brief time, but better read history books about it.
@MrMezmerized
@MrMezmerized 2 жыл бұрын
@@dutchman7623 The UK does have a constitution, just not a codified single document. And while the House of Lords and Queen may be unelected, you know that the House of Commons and other ruling bodies are. But this discussion just muddies the waters; my point was that a nation can also be successful if it's not a republic. It all depends on the rulers.

Never forget that the Dutch Golden Age wasn't golden for everyone. Only for the Amsterdam merchants. (That was/is the flaw) The merchants wanted to stay rich and used all means they had to keep the poor poor and depending. Not unlike current rich people. The " constitutional limits of power" is the most important after the ' freedom' part. In a true free country, the government protects it's citizens from being over-dependent (enslaved) by rich people (companies). If parents work for 40 hours a week (in total, so each 20-20 or 30-10) it should provide enough for a family to rent a modest hous and feed a few children. Otherwise it's just anarchy and survival of the fittest.

Dutchie here. I don't like this scene at all. Sure, at face value it espouses all the values we hold dear right? Wrong. It's overly nationalistic, economically dogmatic, culturally exclusive and ignorant of historical processes. Yeah, sometimes it's useful to unite a group of people behind a flag in order to survive, but after the danger is gone you shouldn't let that flag turn into a blindfold that prevents you from seeing yourself for what you truly are.

It's historical, quite frankly they were far ahead of their time with ideas such as the willingness to defend each others rights being the bond that holds us together. This is true to this day, as nations begin to fall apart when that willingness fades (as you can see in the US democrat vs republican divide right now). You have the privilege of hundreds of years of history to say this, but they did not. You're talking with hindsight, and it is incredibly arrogant to look down on those in the past for not having the advantage of perfect knowledge of history that you have.
